A Dictionary of Thai BLs

I have compiled a handy guide to (most) Thai BLs, which I hope will prove useful to both seasoned viewers and newcomers alike. I believe it contains everything you need to know about this show. For more on my ratings, and my verdict on the show itself, see below.

A: Accidents.
Come in many kinds, but the commonest is the fall-catch-kiss. Don’t try it at home, or you’ll end up in the A&E. Also used to kill off mothers in flashbacks.

B: Bisexuals.
Which every man is. And no woman is.

C: Couples.
Three is the standard. Two unusual. One rare. Go for four if you truly want to torture people. Quality of writing usually declines with, and for, each additional couple.
See Also: Love Triangles.

D: Drinking. Drunkenness.
A drop of alcohol is sufficient for the bottom to lose all inhibition, a glass of beer for the top. Both known to cause irreversible amnesia, particularly after professions of love or a sleeping-beauty kiss.

E: Engineering. Engineers. Engineering Faculty.
The most acceptable setting for a Thai BL.
See also: Medical School.

F: Fake boyfriends.
Because, if there’s anything that’s going to get you out of a tough spot in this virulently homophobic world, it is pretending to have a gay lover.

G: Guitars.
Pathognomonic of bad BLs. The harbinger of all things abysmal. When you hear that first strum, run fast, run far.

H: Homophobia.
Generally absent, unless it can be (cynically) mined to manufacture a last-minute conflict. Where present, it's usually the father. It might be argued, however, that it is the BL genre itself that's ultimately homophobic, even Thai BL.
See also: “Don’t say Gay”, 11th Episode Curse.

I: Illness or indisposition.
Usually fever. Sometimes fainting. Often from a drop of rain or a glass of wine. Great occasion for piggy-back riding and sensual towel baths.

J: Jest. Jokes. Jocularity.
Slapstick, often scatological. Growls of hunger mandatory. Throw in a few jokes at the expense of your effeminate (i.e., actually “gay”) and trans characters to show people how truly progressive you are.
See also: Homophobia, Transphobia

K: Kisses.
At least nominally present, unlike in KBL. Vary in range from fish-eye non-kisses to full on snog-fest. First kiss nearly always accidental. Common trends include underwater kissing & rooftop kisses.

L: Like. Love.
Used in such phrases as, “I am not gay. I just like you.”

M: Miscommunication and Misunderstanding.
The commonest and laziest way to manufacture a conflict. Usually involves accidentally hearing a half truth, and wilfully interpreting it against the other party.
See also: Forced Separation, Trips Abroad

N: Noble Idiot.
One of three acceptable ways to separate a couple. The idiot will run away from his love, in order to spare and save him, by making him, and us, suffer.
See also: Miscommunication & Misunderstanding, Homophobia.

O: Orphanhood.
A sure-fire way to coax sympathy. Achieved by death or abandonment. Mothers always die. Usually by accident or cancer. Fathers run away. Usually with another woman.
See also: Flashbacks.

P: Product placement.
An indispensable ingredient of East Asian BLs. Look out for rose milk, a make-up kit, or a carbonated drink.
See also: Subtlety (Lack of).

Q: Q-tips.
Essential to treat the whisper of a scrape, no more than the size of an ant, without which the submissive shall die of sepsis.

R: Reincarnation.
A way to bury your gays and have them too. Trades on cultural norms for acceptability. A premise that’s never put to good use.

S: Sexual Roles and Positions.
The difference between the dominant ("the top", "the seme") and the submissive ("the bottom", "the uke") must be maintained at all costs. The dominant shall be more aggressive, more violent, and the pursuer. The submissive shall be a shy maiden, who cannot be trusted to climb the stairs without falling down. The dynamic may be reinforced in many ways.
See also: Age Difference, Height Difference.

T: Towels. Towel baths. Hand Towels.
The occasion to reveal the perfectly sculpted and dehydrated body. Or to wipe out a food crumb from your lover’s mouth, possibly due to chronic shortage of napkins in Bangkok, or because our submissive has joined Riverdance and cannot use his arms.

U: Uniforms.
A bleached white shirt and a pair of blue or grey trousers. If at school, make the trousers short. If at university, add a grey jacket.

V: Varsities.
Basketball is unexpectedly the most popular. Followed by singing, since it always involves a national competition. Football & volleyball — sports that are actually popular in Thailand — are occasionally allowed.

W: Women.
Disposable. Usually limited to fujoshis and evil ex-girlfriends.
See also: Misogyny.

X: X-Rated (or NC) scenes.
More wishful thinking than reality. Usually involves one actor planking over another with minimal body contact. But, starved as we are, we’ll take it.

Y: Yikes!
Reserved for tropes that ought to be retired by now. You know what they are.
See also: A Therapist.

Z: Zzzzz… I’ve run out of ideas, okay? Much like Thai BLs.

Ratings:
— Story: Thai BLs have basically become an IKEA factory. We all know that. So, I wrote out this dictionary for fun, and thought to myself that, the more a show borrows from it, the less marks I'd give it for storytelling. (Of course, tropes themselves are fine, and when done well, fun. Tropes can also be subverted and made original. But left to itself, a trope becomes a failing organ and threatens the unity of the whole organism.)
— Casting: 5 for heat, 5 for acting.
— Music: If there's a guitar anywhere on the horizon, the rating instantly goes to 1. Otherwise, I tend to tune out most BL music. If it really stands out, I'll give it 5 minimum.
— Rewatch Value: Less than 5, don't bother. 5 to 7.5, yes, with generous skipping and skimming. Above 7.5, worth it.
— Needless to say, this is all meant to be for good fun. Not to be taken seriously.

Initial Observations:
— First of all: 24 episodes? Jesus Christ!
— Engineering jackets!
— This is going to suck, I can tell.
— GMMTV needs a hostile takeover.
— 4 stars for cast, just for Perth. I'll add another star, because some of them can act.
— Lastly, I wrote out this dictionary as fun, and it is mainly intended to make people laugh. But even I couldn't have predicted what a formulaic trope-fest this would be. And I'm just on Ep. 2! The fact that this is the third time in as many months that I have used this dictionary, with no small predictable power, tells you how bad, scientifically, Thai BLs are at the moment. (Though ThamePo isn't half bad, and Gelboys gives me hope.)

Verdict:
I couldn't get past the third episode. So, I quit, and have marked this as such. However, a friend is making a Perth/Santa cut for me, so I might check that out, and update this review afterwards.

Reader's Digest:
DO SAY: 4 x 6 = 24.
DON'T SAY: Four Horse-couples of the Apocalypse.

A series I can watch all day and night

I have read the novel and I love it, no need to doubt Jittirain's writing skills. Personally, I think this series is adapted and modified well. They changed some details from the novel, but that makes me love it even more. The comedy, the friendship, even the love story, everything just makes a harmonious plot. It's my current comfort series, I am willing to watch it all day and night if I have nothing to do. I really can't wait to watch the new episode every week, so if you haven't started it yet, I hope you can start it now. Don't binge-watch it, you'll miss the euphoria!

Entertaining

I love the main couple, I've seen them in other BL and i didnt lnow they will be the main couple here, but the show was so talked about that i put it on.
Main friend group is entertaining, 3 of them are so dumb its funny.
2nd couple was so unnecessary and i didn't care about them at all.

Its a cute watch but the main couple gets a bit annoying with all the back and forth. They kiss and exchange couples bracelet and everyone knows they like each other but for some reason they're still not together because Arm is shy? Like you kissed 5 times already, he gave you the bracelet and wore a jersey with your name, posted a picture confirming you're together... what more donyou want? I got a bit frustrated with this.

Also, its called perfect 10 liners after this college group but its never really explained what its about. They're all hot? The hole show is named after this and they barely even show this group interacting and it has no significance for the plot.

All in all its entertaining and funny show to watch and im looking forward to seeing the main actors in somwthing else

Perfect 10 Liners.

This series is separated into 3 different stories that As of episode 9 seemingly have little to no connection so I'll review it as 3 mini dramas.

Arm/Arc 6.0

Cute boy dumb goes to college catches they eye of handsome older peer, they fight, they tease each other they fall in love. It had some pretty hilarious moments, mostly cute and fluffy nothing exciting nothing new. It's Force/Book doing the exact same as always. As dumb as it was I still enjoyed it so I'll be generous and rate it a 6.

GMMTV please give us the character dynamics they had in Enchante' with an actually watchable plot, it can't be that hard.

Yotha/Gun 7.0

Casting Junior as Perth's younger brother was a choice...It would've been more beleivable the other way around, just saying.

At first I was like "Oh is this a Between us situation?" and then it was more of the same, dumb cutie and tough cool guy blah blah blah Yotha might be just a tad more of a hot head than Arc was and I didn't think it was possible but gun is even dumber and more childish than Arm.More of the same, I'm kinda over it but then I guess I'm not 'cause I'm still clicking next and OMG, he does look like a Beagle puppy so adorable, cute, helpless and dumber than a bag of hammers please God protect this child from all evil! I'm loving it and smiling the whole time.

Notice how I didn't mention the second couple on the Arm/Arc story? We'll that's because I didn't really care for them and found them unnecessary; The second couple this time does feel like part of the plot but man they're so toxic I hated Klao so much and I hated that Warit kept taking him back, I hope that by the end the break up they're not a good couple at all.

There's not enough Po in this series, please more Po, He cracks me up every single time.

Faifa/wine 7.0

Easily the best couple, I love how their relationship developed and that there's no whiny childish boy to uptight mean character in this pairing instead we got the sweetest most adorable duo. Faifa is so nice way too kind for his own good and wine is there to make him come to his senses, it's ok to say no sometimes.

The whole ordeal with Faifa's mother really didn't do it for me and made me take breaks between episodes because I kept losing focus.

The last episode wasn't good at all for me, the worst couple the one that I was rooting against got engaged??!! what why!!! ???? I hated that.

Luckily I got Po to make me laugh otherwise I think I would've skipped the whole episode.

Funny enough the couple that I was more excited to watch was the most underwhelming. Faifa and wine were the best and I would love to see them in their own series sometime soon.

At the end of the day Perfect 10 liners is an Ok drama nothing new or exciting but still sweet enough to make you smile the whole way through.

The story is a total cliche collage show but the natural acting, the friend group, the perfect comedy timing and the chemistry between characters will satisfy you good enough for you to keep watching. If you want a silly show for some good laugh and giggling, and if you want a series to be a comfort show this one might be a perfect choice for you.

FORCEBOOK FOREVER

I love Perfect 10 Liners so much. Every EP is getting better and better. FORCEBOOK makes me so happy I'm going to cry. The storyline and the cast are all perfect, and FORCEBOOK's chemistry is so good. They never fail to amaze me. Thank you, FORCEBOOK and all cast for the amazing work. I'm excited to wait for Sunday to come.

So fun. Really recommends.

I love romcom kind of BL. So perfect for me. It's funny, cute and heartwarming. Big fan of Force and Book, but I also love the other actors in it. Poon and Marc is sooo cute. I hope things happen a little faster with their characters this time. I can't wait to see more from the other couple too. Perth and Santa looks so cute together too. Recommends.

Chemistry and Comedy at Its Finest: Perfect 10 Liners is a Total Win

This show is a gem! Force and Book have such an electric chemistry that it's impossible to look away, they bring such unique personalities to their roles, and the chemistry between them feels so authentic it’s clear they’re both giving their all, making each interaction memorable. The blend of comedy and emotion here is just right, and Book’s timing with those funny moments his ability to change from being funny to cute seamlessly is impressive

Mediocrity at it's best

Im sorry, there no story ,too many characters and mediocre acting.
Force and book have to be separated, this pair no matter what project they do is just not giving .they have no chemistry, they acting is average (please take it as a constructive criticism) you need improvement.
The story is your average school childishly narrated and the story have been told millions of times, (if i see engineering students, and medical students) inBL i think im going to be blind ,for Christ sake stop with these universities stories.

A Comfort Show For All Ages

This series is funny, lighthearted, endearing and overall an easy Sunday night watch.

The cast so far is solid, Book, Poon & JJ are clearly carrying the show with their excellent comedic timing. Book’s characterisation of Arm’s naivety however is extremely endearing & sweet which makes me silently root for him.

These types of shows tend to tread dangerously closely to being cringe if done poorly, but so far everyone is bringing their A game.

Simply put, the show feels like warm well-balanced & flavourful soup on a cold rainy day

Note: Since its airing following We Are & is directed by the same Director, naturally there are a lot of comparisons. My personal opinion is that P10L has better storyline pacing and the screen times are also much better allocated. The overall cast chemistry also feels a bit more authentic.

An Entertaining Watch Indeed!

“Perfect 10 Liners”, like “We Are Series”, is a fun buddy romedy comedy series, which centers around a group of friends, who grow together and find love. Despite not having much substance, it is a feel-good romcom that is meant to be a comfort watch, with little to no tension. “Perfect 10 Liners” is your quintessential BL, you know what you’re getting and you’re happy with it, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything more than it is. The problem with this, however, is that it can be boring and seem overdone, but at the same time, it is a show that wouldn’t disappoint you with its formulaic storytelling. This is for the slice of life lovers, who just want to watch a good romance and see friends goof around while falling in love with no stakes.
