 brucelce:

Thank you so much for all the info.  I guess while drama Xiyang improved upon novel Xiyang in some ways, I am kinda sad that Xiyang and Jingshi became enemies in the drama. Part of me wishes that some aspects of their relationship in the novel was kept in the drama, namely that Jingshi, while he could never reciprocate her feelings, would also never abandon her. While novel Xiyang was very impulsive and rash, at least her feelings for Jingshi were validated. I thought that the drama would have followed the novel more closely for Xiyang because their first encounter was Jingshi sparing Xiyang's life and giving her water, but alas.

I get what the screenwriters had to do to the novel, which they improved muchly for the drama. But as you pointed out, the inconsistencies...

I don't know how you quoted my one line in reply. I haven't figured out how to do so for this site yet, so I'll quote this reply of yours, in order to reply to your latest comment. XJS was willing to give up his most precious military command token to Yixiao before his death. He definitely didn't use Xiyang, although he could have. She was the one who volunteered the idea of using the imperial token as a wedding gift to get him out of Susha. In short, he treated Xiyang as best as he could although one could argue that his choice to withhold truth from her about her father falling sick was his way of keeping her by his side and hence using her as a shield against Xia Jingyan. Even if her father fell sick and she knew immediately, Xia Jingyan would never let her leave Jinxiu because he would want to torment his brother's wife.

Are the death camps and idea of mixing civilians with assassins while sacrificing 300,000 citizens his idea, or something from the Empress Dowager which he had to implement? I don't know, but I will assume for now that the screenwriters wholly attribute it to him. If so, then they totally did his novel-character in just for the drama. What a shame. Looks like Xia Jingshi will immediately advance his plan to do in Xia Jingyan.

Thanks @Xiang83  for this thread. very useful and filled in some gaps in understanding this drama vs novel perspectives. Appreciated!

Ep. 18 - why was the Eunuch so shocked when he sees the miraculous doctor coming out of the room?

Wait I remember too--I never got an explanation for this. Anyone know?

The head eunuch Ma most trusted by the Susha Emperor is not shocked. He runs out frantic with relief to see that Physician Ling has been brought by Feng Suige, because only he knows that Physician Ling sees the Emperor every year for an annual checkup and why this is done. Nobody else, including Feng Suige, knows this.

Thx for explaining, that makes sense!

Hi, I was really curious about how ML's memory loss goes in the novel, is it longer, what happens?

He has no amnesia in the novel. The drama is very different from the novel. And don't worry, his amnesia is super-short in the drama.

Thanks! I think this is the only drama where I low-key wanted it to be longer, I like when these leads are unhinged haha

After reading all comments, I lowkey am mad they made xjs more evil that he is in the novel.  Making drama emperor brother better than him when he is the villain in the novel. My ship (xjs and xy) might have not been so tragic that he was so heartless and abandon her. Okay going to cry for injustice for my Chen heyi to be so evil!

The emperor of Jinxiu as Xia Jingshi's younger brother in the novel and drama is very despicable. I absolutely disliked both versions, but the actor for Xia Jingyan did a fantastic job with his role. If it is a consolation, the screenwriters made his nastiness more subtle but also added to it: https://kisskh.at/768987-wan-xin-ji#comment-24049634

After reading all of this, I feel vindicated for liking XJS.

You're welcome! Drama-Xia Jingshi is very different from novel Xia-Jingshi.

Drama-Xia Jingyan is better than novel-Xia Jingyan but is still a terrible repulsive manipulative piece of work who was emotionally abusive to Xiyang to make her sleep with him (he also withheld information from her). The actor for Xia Jingyan did a great job with a lot of charisma, but I am definitely not a fan of them having a relationship.

Yeah, the actor was really good, but I couldn't like the character. Those flashbacks where he bullied XJS ended every possibility of that.

Can you tell me if the novel XJS controlled the death camps like in the drama and was he involved in the Zhennan Pass conspiracy?

Xia Jingshi in the novel is the most noble male character and a good guy who is a fearsome strategist but has a heart that is too kind, more so than Feng Suige or any other male characters. There is no death camp or Zhennan Pass conspiracy. Feng Suige and Xia Jingshi become agreeable with each other before the end of 24 chapters, because Xia Jingshi helped Feng Suige solve a treasury problem. Why Fu Yixiao fell for Xia Jingshi so thoroughly is understandable. The drama improved many characters in the novel (Xiyang at least survives in the drama and learns lessons, unlike the novel where Xia Jingshi has to help give her an end because of the injuries she suffers from betraying all of them with Xia Jingyan), but screenwriters did the opposite to Xia Jingshi to make him a villain.

I hate it here, because why would they do that to his character?! The novel version is basically what I wanted to happen in the drama. It would’ve been so good! 😭

Anyway, thank you! I guess I want to read the novel now.
