Would have given a higher rating to this episode

except that - especially given all the dramatic events that just happened - the security at the palace was absurdly inadequate. Literally just two guards (who were woefully incompetent)? No other patrols or watch out in the courtyard? The Empress and the formerly sane Marquise Murong just casually murdered the Emperor plus 3 other people without _any_ notice? Good grief. I was rolling my eyes by the last one. And I don't want to spoil it but the end trap is so obvious. The whole thing felt very contrived and I just didn't feel like this episode was up to the same standards as prior episodes. Oh well. Fu Yixiao is going to be so angry.

a bunch of psychos battle it out

this episode is actually insane. i am rarely surprised by anything that takes place in a series but the cruelty of the people in this show knows no bounds. the fact that there's so many episodes left, i have no idea what is going to come next but I can't wait for everyone to get theirs. it seems that in this series, only the FL and ML are in their right mind and everyone else is psychotic. I can't wait for what comes next!

Is it fate, or is it a choice?

This is one chilling episode. When a parent decides, it's absolute, and nothing can stop them from protecting their children. No matter how good a person was, their morals and principles get tested when confronted with huge dilemmas that revolve around their beloved people. For the Zhuangs, it was Zhuang Shen (to avenge his son), then it was the Empress (to avenge her father and to protect her son, and their rightful status). For the Murongs, it started as a grudge by the son, Murong Yao, which led to the father Murong Zhong choosing the bloody path to cover for his son... The Fengs' harsh past pushed the Emperor on to a twisted road, which eventually broke the relationships not only within the family, but also with his close aides, who once served the country and fought on the battlefields together during their younger years. So what exactly went wrong? Was it simply one's fate, or was it the choices these people made? It's such a dilemma....
