Fate or Free Will : A Well Orchestered Game of Chess
(I dont rate a drama till I have completed it. Vendetta of An is an exception for it being so Excellent. after watching Kill My Sins earlier this year I didn't expect an intellectual plot for a long time, but VOA surpassed all expectations. Is it Choice/FreeWill or Destiny/Fate?
VOA is story of HXA out for revenge against YFS who annhilated his family. Both having loyal aides and spies on their side and thus begins their game of chess with different characters as pawns playing their roles to the best and leaving the board either sacrified or martyred for their belief of what is right.
Every death on the righteous side, like HXA burying and burning the huben army person, is answered equally by the villain side , like WP killing the soldier in same way..there are many such parallels throughout..as if Fate is keeping scores..yet all characters be it YZL, Aunt Xin and her son, WP, BW all seem to also be choosing to work for HXA or YFS..and all their choices directly or indirectly aiding/thwarting the whole "game"...
so how much is fate? how much is Free will?
And once HXA "kills" YFS and it looks like the game is done and board can be cleared, it is revelaed that the feud between XHA's family and YFS was actually part of broader plot by Teimo king to annex Chang'an without as less fight as possible.
now starts an even deeper game where past allies are revelaed as foes and one hero after another falls.
How XHA turns the tide in Chang'an's favour is another added intelligent treat for the viewers.
one of the c-dramas where death of character has been dealt with the right human emotions, both the killer is conflicted for taking lives and the dead person be it good/villian side is mourned as they had a space in someone life.
I know this is work of fiction but the scriptwriter has done a great job of making it as realistic to real life as possible with the synchroniciies, premonitions, defeats, betrayal, loyalty, wins, escapes, deaths..there is no right/wrong as of now..everyone doing what they think is right or supporting someone because of their life circumstances
all actors have played their role remarkably. Cheng Yi as always slays this role. his subtle microexpressions, minor change in posture from happiness around his people, to chill calm while killing to deranged when threatening his enemies..all done brilliantly without raising his voice or overacting and adding depth to his character. and every character small or big (as per screen time) give their best and leave a lasting imapct.
What ultimately left the deepest impression on me was realizing the work of shadow guards...here, XHA’s father’s work continued to protect XHA and Chang’an’s common people long after his death. The sacrifices of the shadow guards—and of the families they leave behind—are never written into history, celebrated, or even acknowledged, yet they form the invisible foundation on which the common people of Chang’an (or any country) stands. Generations live and die in silence so that peace can appear effortless to those who benefit from it.
This drama became a Story of unsung heroes who protect our nations from forces within and utside working to destabilize peace and harmony.
BE IT FATE or FREE WILL - both come at a COST, so immense that it is unfathomable for the common man.

BEST DRAMA ENDING 2025
I Honestly have to give this drama a soild 10/10. It was soo good and it was indeed the drama to close off the year 2025. The story was amazing. There were alot of plot twist that keeps you on the edge and then theres the hook that brings you back in. I highly reccomended this drama. The fight scences are amazing and the characters are played very well. Although the ending feels a bit bitter sweet it is indeed a beautiful way to go.Was this review helpful to you?

The Vendetta of An: A Dark Wuxia Masterpiece of Calculated Revenge
Navigating the intricate world of short form web dramas, one seldom encounters a production that balances the sharp edge of a revenge thriller with the rich, atmospheric depth of a traditional historical epic as effectively as The Vendetta of An. Streaming on Youku, this drama manages to weave a dense tapestry of political intrigue, personal trauma, and shadow warfare that leaves a lasting impression. While many dramas in this genre focus on the spectacle of martial arts, The Vendetta of An prioritizes the psychological weight of its characters, making it a standout masterpiece of tension and calculated revenge. The Architect of Shadows: Xie Huai’an
At the center of this storm is Xie Huai’an, a character whose brilliance is matched only by his restraint. Portrayed with a chillingly calm demeanor, Xie is not your typical hot blooded protagonist. He is a man who has lived in the cold for a decade, meticulously carving out a path to the heart of power in Chang'an. What I find most compelling about Xie Huai’an is his duality. To the world and the usurper Xiao Wu Yang, he is a loyal, "brilliant official" from Huainan a useful tool for administrative stability. To the audience, however, he is a predator masquerading as prey.
His motivation is deeply personal: the death of his father at the hands of Yan Feng Shan. This isn't just a story about justice; it’s a story about the corrosive nature of a decade long vendetta. The drama excels in showing how Xie Huai’an uses his intellect as his primary weapon. While others draw swords, Xie draws maps of human psychology. His ability to manipulate the political board while keeping his true emotions hidden under a veneer of professional politeness is what makes his character so magnetic. You don’t just watch him; you find yourself rooting for his cold, calculated brilliance.
The Ghost of the Wude Reign: Yan Feng Shan
Every great protagonist needs an equally formidable foil, and Yan Feng Shan, leader of the Huben Dark Guards, serves this role with terrifying efficiency. The Huben are presented not just as soldiers, but as a spectral force that vanished along with the old empire. Yan Feng Shan represents the "old guard" in the worst possible way he is the lingering shadow of a fallen regime, supposedly using the dethroned emperor for his own ends.
The dynamic between Xie and Yan is a masterclass in tension. Yan Feng Shan is a man of the shadows, a survivor of a bloody transition of power who understands that in Chang'an, information is more lethal than steel. The drama cleverly avoids making him a one dimensional villain. Instead, he is a pragmatist. His previous actions, specifically the killing of Xie’s father, are framed not as random acts of cruelty, but as the brutal necessities of a man maintaining a dark order. This makes the eventual confrontation between them feel earned and heavy with the weight of history.
The Alliance of the Dispossessed
One of the highlights of The Vendetta of An is the formation of the clandestine alliance. The drama brilliantly utilizes the "dethroned emperor" as a narrative pivot. Typically, a fallen ruler is a figure of pity or a mere plot device, but here, the emperor becomes a pawn that Xie Huai’an expertly maneuvers. This reversal of power where the highest ranking man in the land becomes the instrument of a provincial official’s revenge is a fascinating subversion of wuxia tropes.
The supporting cast, specifically General Gu Yu and the swordsman Ye Zheng, add much needed texture to the world. General Gu Yu brings a sense of grounded military stoicism, representing the honor that was lost during Xiao Wu Yang’s seizure of power. On the other hand, Ye Zheng provides the visceral, "boots on the ground" perspective of a swordsman caught in the gears of high level conspiracy. Each member of this alliance feels like they have skin in the game; they aren't just following a hero, they are reclaiming a piece of their own stolen lives.
Atmospheric Storytelling and Production
Visually, the drama is a treat for fans of the "Noir Wuxia" aesthetic. The cinematography leans heavily into the contrast between the opulence of the court and the grimy, rain slicked alleys where the Huben Dark Guards lurk. There is a sense of claustrophobia in the way Chang'an is filmed, emphasizing that even in a city of millions, there is nowhere to hide from one’s past.
The pacing is relentless. Because it is a shorter series, there is no room for filler. Every dialogue heavy scene in the official’s chambers is balanced by the kinetic energy of the "shadowy war" being waged in the streets. I particularly appreciated the sound design the metallic ring of a blade being unsheathed or the quiet rustle of a scroll carries significant weight, heightening the "cloak and dagger" atmosphere.
Themes of Loyalty and the Cost of Revenge
What I love most about The Vendetta of An is its refusal to offer easy answers. Is Xie Huai’an a hero for seeking justice for his father, or is he a villain for using a dethroned emperor and the stability of the empire to achieve it? The drama explores the grey areas of loyalty. Xiao Wu Yang, the feudal lord, thinks he has bought Xie’s loyalty, but Xie’s true allegiance is to a ghost. This theme of "false faces" permeates every episode, keeping the audience on edge.
The "vendetta" of the title is a double edged sword. As we watch Xie Huai’an get closer to Yan Feng Shan, we see the toll it takes on him. The ten years he spent preparing were ten years he didn't truly live. This adds a layer of tragedy to the drama that elevates it above a simple action flick. It is a meditation on what we lose when we refuse to let go of the past.
Final Verdict: A True Gem on Youku
The Vendetta of An is a sophisticated, character driven drama that punches well above its weight class. It treats its audience with respect, offering a complex plot that requires attention and rewards it with deep emotional payoffs. The performances are understated yet powerful, and the direction is sharp and purposeful.
For those who enjoy tales of secret societies, political maneuvering, and the long game of revenge, this is a must watch. It captures the essence of the "Dark Guard" subgenre perfectly, blending historical "what-ifs" with the timeless appeal of a man standing against the odds to right a personal wrong.
(Spoiler Warning: Character Trajectory)
To speak briefly on the resolution of Xie’s arc: the drama concludes with a poignant reminder that while the Huben might be eliminated and the father avenged, the landscape of power in Chang'an is forever changed. Xie Huai’an’s journey ends not with a triumphant roar, but with the quiet realization that his mission has redefined the empire’s fate in ways he never originally intended. He becomes the very architect of the new world he once sought only to disrupt.
In conclusion, The Vendetta of An is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of the shadows that haunt the halls of power. It is a story of how one man’s memory can become a nation’s destiny. If you are looking for a drama that combines intellectual depth with the thrill of a wuxia thriller, look no further than this Youku masterpiece.

Cheng Yi redeems himself from Journey of Legend
Intense, violent-but in context, next chapter please. For a "genius in the house" drama, so much more riveting than Xiao Zhan in Legend of Zang Hai (my opinion is that XZ seems to play roles that point out just how self aware he is of his cleverness) or Chen Xiao's The Ingenious One (same self awareness ---tho' being clever in The Magnate worked better for him there)
There is some major brutality but at least it makes sense compared to the drop of the hat fights in Blood River.
As for the actors:
-CY 's acting/character balances crazed cruel eyed vengeance with wistful compassion-and while in the story, others acknowledge his brilliance, it isn't about feeding his ego.
-Former Emperor actor on point, just as he did well in Zang Hai (hmmm that production and this must employ same agencies as Father in this drama is same actor as in Zang Hai!)
-Cracked up that Tong Meng Shi is playing yet another martial arts god-his voice is utterly memorable from Joy of Life.
-Actor who plays Gu Yu-terrifically different from the memorably calm and devoted eunuch in Serenade of Peaceful Joy
I am a fan of embedded romance but I don't anticipate it here and it's ok, the story is compelling. SOOO makes up for what a dud Journey of Legend was (not same genre but am comparing what CY has acted in lately, not type of drama).
The cinematography, fresh takes on costumes (non symmetrical collar designs) great.

Best drama! Amazing acting
Xie Huai An.. I love love this character! He's so incredibly smart and clever, always thinking ahead.. when he is hurt it feels so real and it is impossible not to care about him. The other actors are AMAZING too—they make their characters feel alive, and together the whole cast just brings the story to life in the most beautiful way.The drama itself is pure WOW! I'm absolutely satisfied ❤️

Masterpiece and chef kiss!
The best revenge drama everrrrrr!!!The plot twists within twists will make you hook this drama.
No romance at all and this makes the drama more appeal to watch as that is unnecessary to drive the plot unlike other dramas.
The climax starts from Episode 1 to till the end. No boring scenes at all and no climax down like other dramas. Fast pacing but there’s no cut scenes.
This script writer is the best! He/she knows how to write it.
Acting? You know it’s Cheng Yi. Trust him. The best ever. All supporting actors are also great.
The directing needs a little improvement as some scenes deserve the memorable visuals like trademarks of the drama but there’s little to none.
Overall, watch it. I bet you would also love it.

Chang An Er Shi Si Ji is a drama that stays with you long after the final episode ends.
This is not an easy or fast-paced watch. It does not rely on convenience or quick emotional rewards. Instead, it asks for patience and attention, slowly unfolding its story through silence, careful observation, and layered strategies. The deliberate pacing and lack of unnecessary spectacle give the narrative depth and weight.
One of the strongest aspects of the series is Cheng Yi’s performance. His portrayal is restrained, mature, and emotionally controlled, relying on subtle expressions and quiet intensity rather than dramatic excess. It is a performance that anchors the entire story and elevates the drama as a whole.
Revenge, the core theme, is depicted as cold and calculated rather than heroic or triumphant. The characters exist in moral gray zones, shaped by circumstance and forced into choices that carry lasting consequences. Every decision matters, and every sacrifice feels meaningful.
The ending remains true to the tone of the series—quiet, heavy, and emotionally resonant. It does not seek spectacle, but closure, reinforcing the idea that some things cannot be undone, only brought to an end.
For its intelligent writing, atmospheric storytelling, and powerful lead performance, Chang An Er Shi Si Ji fully earns a 10/10. It is a historical drama that rewards patience and leaves a lasting impression.

A HIDDEN JEWEL
The Vendetta of An delivers peak political intrigue, flawless pacing, and stunning visuals. Cheng Yi absolutely owns the role, balancing sharp intelligence with deep emotional weight. Every twist hits, the cast is strong across the board, and the story stays gripping from start to finish. Easily a top-tier costume drama and a must-watch.Cheng Yi ate this role, no crumbs left. His acting hits hard in all the right places—pain, loyalty, quiet strength, emotional breakdowns that actually feel real. You can tell he puts his whole soul into every scene, even when he’s not saying a word. The drama keeps you hooked with strong storytelling, beautiful visuals, and emotions that sneak up on you and refuse to let go.
The pacing is solid, the chemistry works, and the OST just adds to the feels. But honestly? Cheng Yi is the heart of this drama. He makes you root for him, cry with him, and think about the story long after the episode ends.
If you’re a fan of c-dramas with depth, angst, and top-tier acting, this one is a must-watch. No skips, no regrets. 💯

Incredible characters, The story of Chang An
"The Vendetta of An" is a story of Chang An, with the main themes of revenge and grief. You pretty much see the rise and fall of both the people and the city through the eyes of Xie Huai An. In a way, XHA is not the main character, but instead the narrator to the stories of a multitude of other characters. Each of these other characters are desperately trying to write their own story and escape the narrative, which is what the show is ultimately about. Will you escape the cycle of revenge, or will you ultimately fall to those who are stuck in it?
This is not a "friendly" show. Every episode could be a death flag, every episode could provide an opportunity where the tides are turned. Even though ultimately you do not know the outcome of anyone's fate, the show gets you to care for every single character you meet along the way.
The absolute standout of the show, and what makes it worth watching in my opinion is the casting and characters. I'd argue that many people are type-casted in this show, from the veterans actors to your leads of Cheng Yi, Zhou Qi, and Tong Meng Shi. However, everyone plays their respective achetype so well that you simply cannot be mad that you've seen these people in these roles before.
Personally, this show is a 10 but there points in the story that are... dubious, at best. As mentioned before , plot twists appear left and right, and some things are just barely explained which can be frustrating. Especially when one character dies, while another lives almost unexplainably, suffering the same conditions as those who could not meet a more fortunate fate. There's also a lot of history to some characters, which are implied but logistically still make very little sense if you think about too hard. There are also some relationships that can seem a bit unrealistic, until you realize that the world they live in is much more unforgiving than our own. Although it seems more grounded than you typical Xianxia/Wuxia, you should treat it as a wuxia/xianxia. Suspend your disbelief for a bit, and this is a very entertaining, very enjoyable story.

Best 2025 drama
Review: The Vendetta of AnThe Vendetta of An is a gripping C-drama that proves powerful storytelling does not need excess to leave a lasting impression. From its opening moments, the series establishes a somber, reflective mood that pulls viewers into a carefully constructed narrative driven by emotion and consequence. It is a drama that values depth over spectacle, making it especially appealing to audiences who enjoy thoughtful and mature stories.
What truly sets this drama apart is its focus on character psychology. Every major character feels purposeful, shaped by past choices and inner conflicts that quietly influence their actions. The script allows these complexities to unfold gradually, creating a strong sense of realism. Instead of rushing major developments, the drama takes its time, letting tension grow organically and making each episode feel meaningful.
The acting across the board is impressive. The leads deliver restrained yet powerful performances, capturing pain, resolve, and vulnerability with subtle precision. Even supporting characters are given enough space to shine, adding richness to the overall narrative. The emotional weight of the story is carried not by dramatic outbursts, but by controlled performances that feel sincere and grounded.
In terms of production, The Vendetta of An is visually elegant. The cinematography and color palette enhance the atmosphere, while the music complements the story without distracting from it. Every technical element works in harmony to support the drama’s tone.
In conclusion, The Vendetta of An is a well-crafted, emotionally resonant C-drama that stays with you. It is a rewarding watch for anyone seeking a serious, character-driven story told with confidence and care.
