Yun Gap is a government officer who works in the palace. He has a good reputation and has a handsome appearance. One day, Yun Gap's body becomes possessed by an Imoogi creature. Soon afterwards, people start talking about him as if he has lost his mind. The Imugi who possessed Yun Gap is related to Yeo Ri, whose first love was Yun Gap.
Yeo Ri is the only granddaughter of a famous shaman. She has a divine gift but refuses to accept her fate as a medium of spirit. Instead, she works as a glass craftswoman. The Imugi needs Yeo Ri's body to ascend to Heaven, but Yeo Ri won't allow it. After Yun Gap becomes possessed, Yeo Ri enters the palace filled with powerful female ghosts and evil spirits.
Meanwhile, King Yi Seong is a reformist monarch who dreams of a strong Joseon nation. Weird and terrible incidents continue to take place within the palace. These are related to the powerful female ghosts who hold a grudge against the royal family. To get rid of the ghosts, Yun Gap, Yeo Ri, and King Yi Seong search for the secret of the female ghosts.

both shows have themes of folklore & possession within a historical setting.
in TDHR, Ban Xia, the female lead, is seen by others as mentally unstable because she can see demons, just like Yeo Ri, who rejected her fate as a shaman despite being spiritually gifted bc of the backlash by her townsfolk. The male lead, Xuan Ye, is a demon hunter assigned to maintain order in Guangping City, which, like the haunted palace in THP, is plagued by malevolent spirits. But Xuan Ye, much like Yun Gap, is secretly connected to the dark forces he’s supposed to fight (he’s suspected of being a demon himself) which mirrors Yun Gap’s possession by the Imoogi.
Their partnership in solving supernatural cases is similar to the the alliance between Yun Gap, Yeo Ri, and King Yi Seong as they unravel the palace’s tragic past tied to vengeful spirits.

Both stories are very similar in fantasy , soul shifting , and well written plot and characters blend with action mystery keep you guessing
This is a central plot point. The female lead's soul (Naksu) was initially in a different body (Mu-deok) in Season 1. In Season 2, she returns to her original body but with amnesia, leading to a journey of rediscovering her true identity and past with Jang Uk. This isn't exactly "possession" in the same way as "The Haunted Palace," but it involves a soul residing in a different body and dealing with the implications of that.
