Inokashira Goro, a trader of imported goods, enjoys dining at restaurants. The story opens with a quick jaunt to Paris, where an elderly Japanese expat, Ichiro, entrusts Goro with a mission to find the ingredients for a soup that he ate during his childhood. This quest takes our rangy hero from the Goto Islands in southwestern Japan to a mothballed ramen shop in Tokyo, via an unplanned detour to South Korea, where he stumbles upon an all-female colony of food researchers presided over by Yuki Uchida and meets the world’s most benevolent immigration officer.
