K-Drama Lol..not him running out of mind to lose 😭🤣 He’s used to winning battles. 🔥 But I think his redemption will depend on whether he actually learns to let go of control and respect Pingjun, not just how much he loves her. There’s clearly more to his character, so I’m curious to see how the writers handle it. He has a lot to make up for…

It's weird. I'm in the middle of Ep 8. ML/FL are in the refugee camp speaking. Previously ML was playing with the little kids and he brought them to the camp that morning, so he clearly has a soft spot for them. But when talking to FL he seems to be purposefully saying things to make her hate him. Why? Is he pushing her to see if he can break her or is he trying to heal his demons and find someone who will love him with all his faults? There has to be a reason, because he's not as evil as he makes himself out to be.
This is what makes Changxuan so interesting to me! 👀🫶🏻He clearly has a softer side, especially when we see him with the children, so I don't think he's as heartless as he wants Pingjun to believe. I sometimes wonder if he pushes her away because he doesn't know how to deal with his own feelings. But with this man, you never know what's going on in his head..
Hi
I’ll love reading your thoughts as you make your way through the drama! I’ve already watched all the episodes that have aired. As for the characters, it’s pretty typical of C-dramas to introduce so many that sometimes it’s hard to keep track of them all.
As for Yu Chang Xuan, his obsessive love for her is going to drive him to the brink of madness. But I trust the writers to give him a redemption arc and meaningful character growth. I think it was a great decision to spend these first few episodes showing us things from his POV, allowing us to try to understand his psychology in the midst of such a turbulent and cruel era.
MiMo:
I feel like Chang Xuan shows Ping Jun the worst side of himself as a way of testing whether she'll choose him despite everything. After what happened with his father, he has some serious abandonment issues. So he's caught in this push-and-pull dynamic: “I want you to love me the way I love you,” while also pushing her away because deep down, he believes she won't stay by his side.
Oh Chang Long you're killing me! You're the gossipy little old aunt that corners everyone to get the juiciest bits and then has to pass them along. You're in the midst of danger and you've got stars in your eyes!
I love supporting actors. The best elevate a drama and you're one of the best.
Ah yes, the famous bathtub scene. I don't know when it started, but now it's a requisite scene in all Cheng Lei's dramas (not complaining). But nobody said how beautifully filmed it was. The kiss, wow. I've scene more racy kisses, but this one, so slow, so sensual, ups the intensity. The understatement, the suggestion more than showing. It's what good film making is all about.

I think he definitely doesn't know how to deal with his feelings. I'm not even sure he wants these feelings. And I don't think he had a lot of good role models growing up having a father who apparently only saw him as an ecumbrance and having lost his older brother. When he was at his brother's memorial tablet he told him there were so many things he didn't teach him before dying.

Hmm, interesting point! You’re so right about the abandonment issues part! 🙌🏻👀 I’m just not sure he’s consciously doing it to test her. I feel like his commander side kicks in here. 😂 He’s used to the battlefield, where he knows he has to take charge, strategize, and fight to win. And I think he approaches Pingjun in much the same way because that’s what he knows best. When he wants something, his instinct is to go after it and find a way to get it.
But feelings are a whole different battlefield, and Pingjun gets under his skin in a way he probably isn’t used to. He knows he wants to win her over…but he’s fighting a whole new kind of battle, one he doesn’t know how to navigate because feelings are unfamiliar territory for him.🤭

Oh I'm so glad you commented. This is a great drama for discussion!
It's taking me awhile to watch each episode because I have to stop and google who people are and their place in the drama. I've always had a hard time sorting characters out and this one has a lot with a lot of back stories that they are only giving us piecemeal. But I'm finding that writing out my thoughts here is helping me pay more attention to what's going on. I haven't been this riveted by a drama in awhile.
I so hope your trust in the writers is prove true, because this is a really well-made drama, the cinematography is so good and the acting is great.

That's a good point. Between his father having no time or interest in him and his brother dying he really had to push his feelings down in order to survive. He's so conflicted and maybe he doesn't even know why he treats the FL the say he does. I hope the writers can sustain this level of tension and find a good resolution because it's a lot and there are so many ways they could crash it.
MiMo:

Exactly. He doesn't do it consciously, but his fear of not being chosen makes his jealousy that much more intense. He's like a raging bull. Chang Xuan is a man of action. He's decisive, and he uses what he knows best, commanding troops, to deal with a feeling he's never experienced before. On top of that, Ping Jun is the one variable that doesn't fit into the order and structure he's used to in military life. And that drives him crazy
Episode 9
Jiang Xue Ting isn't a very good spy (yes, I've seen enough spoilers to know). The one thing a spy should never do is call attention to themselves. Not that I know that much about being a spy, but seriously. You say you're not a great shooter and you beat Li Bo Ren. You say you're just ordinary at grappling and you almost beat our hero. Not that it would make a lick of difference as you already had a target on your back, but no sense handing your enemy (and why are you spying on your countrymen, anyway) a key to the fort.
I love you, Liu Yuning, and it's not your decision where they place your song, but I get so annoyed when I'm watching a great scene (Yu Chang Xuan is preparing to "slap" Ye Ping Jun) and the sudden silence indicates a song is coming. No, no, no! You just cut the tension in half. Why, why, why do they do this? And why did she look like she was waiting for a kiss? If I think someone's going to slap me my face is going to be tense, not soft and expectant.
Yu Chang Xuan is that annoying person that sounds so reasonable it makes his opponents look petty when he's the cause of all the chaos.
Uh oh! ML's cringey fiancée just came face to face with Mr. Spy and blanched. So did he. Now things are heating up. Oh, my bad. I forgot he was the one who lectured her when she tried to burn FL's face. I wonder how ML would react if he finds out about that.
Lol! Mr. Spy getting comfy on the floor reading files. The old trick, shut the door while staying in the room. Clever, clever. Will ML catch him? The tension they manage to build in this drama is impressive.
Ooh, someone in the comments on Viki said they were enjoying this show more than PoJ. Surprisingly they got no pushback. I wonder how many fans of PoJ are also watching/enjoying this drama. Comments on Viki can be funny, informative and annoying.
Not a very exciting confrontation when ML saw Mr. Spy coming out of the archives room, but under the surface what is brewing?
So sweet, little sister is a fan of FL. She's got fiancée's number.
Sad seeing the dead brother's widow coming face to face with the woman said brother wanted to marry (had to look up the back story on these three). Feel sorry for all three. Interesting that Lan Qing said she was doing fine thanks to ML's mom. Wonder what's been going on between them.
They drink a lot of soup. Snow pear, white fungus, and lily bulb soup sounds kind of interesting, at least the pear part! It's so interesting seeing what people eat in Chinese dramas. Always lots of ingredients I'm unfamiliar with.
Oh my heart. The ending of this episode between ML and big sister is so poignant. Who did she want to marry and why couldn't she? She warns him: don't let the one you love slip away. Is this drama going to break my heart in the end?
Episode 10
OK so Mr. Spy has a list of soldiers who died and were wrongly listed as dying in combat. Guy is seeking justice. So far, I'm on his side. Have I judged him unfairly?
Chang Long you're reactions are so good! That little jump scare was too precious.
Yu Chang Xuan is almost rolling his eyes when he talks with his evil fiancée.
When he taunts Ye Ping Jun with the book in the bookstore, why does she respond? Why doesn't she walk away? She knows from experience that he's going to continue taunting her. Does she secretly like it? Does she just hate letting him get the best of her? It's definitely hard to walk away when someone acts like YCX does, but can she really win?
Then she bites him? Come on, girl. Get your knee between his legs and get away, if you really want to.
If YCX's fiancée was a good person his behavior towards her would be indefensible. But she's evil, so I'm loving how he's treating her. She deserve that and worse.
Hahaha! After that water splash I almost want 2ML to not be a bad guy.
At the ball as she's introduced to SML's coworkers I finally understand some of the conversation. Hěn gāoxìng rènshí nǐ was one of the first things I learned on Duolingo. I remember how awkward it felt trying to say it and it seemed so hard to remember. Now it's pretty easy to say and I instantly recognize it. I wish I could say the same for everything else I'm hearing in Chinese! Learning at a slow pace, but some words stand out at least.
