Apparently in the novel,  they had a son and were happy together.  He succumbed to the poison and returned to the real world- back in 2016  and grew up with foreknowledge and adult dedication to build a company that bought the rights to the story (becoming the CEO).    She remained as Empress, bringing up their son to be Emperor and adding modern commercial enterprises to the city.   She wandered the world, died at a suitably old age returning to the real world (2026) and reunited with him.

I do recall seeing a photo of the actor playing the son, dressed as emperor, holding a bunch of flowers (so his last day on set) - so they did film something, but unsure of what they had planned.
