How are you? -Fine, Thank you and you?

On the occasion of completing 1 year with MDL😁, I am writing my first review.
(So, forgive me if I made any mistake.)

Since this was a transmigration drama, I didn’t get my hopes up. I just wanted to enjoy the chemistry between the leads, and they didn’t disappoint me.
I loved how the transitions unfolded in the story and the way each character was portrayed.

Cheng Lei truly portrayed his character exceptionally well. He is genuinely a king of expressions ..❤️ every subtle look and emotional shift felt convincing and powerful.

Wang Chu Ran - As expected our strong lady, sometimes I was getting vibe of Liu Mian Tang. 🫣
I will miss them both ...like how calm and casual they were with each other.

I discovered a whole new side of Hu Yi Xuan here as I hadn't watched any historical drama of her before.... but I think its time to watch.😅

Tang Xiao Tian - Truly nailed it...👌 At some point I actually started to hate him.

Also gonna miss Bei Shu and A Bai... looking forward to see more dramas of Cheng Hong Xin.....😋

OSTs 🎶 —Already added in Playlist ✅

Overall.... for me, this was one of the best transmigration dramas I’ve watched till now.

That’s it for now. I’ll stop here and work on improving my reviews over time. See you next time… bye~~! 👋

Worth the wait..

Waited so long for this drama to come out.. and well I'm not disappointed 💜 the thing i loved about this drama was that the writer actually spent time on the characters.. they allowed you to like them.. love them or hate them with reason.. development wasnt rushed.. even the ending wasnt rushed like typical with cdramas.. story was chaotic and funny.. it kept my attention throughout the show.. if you're a Cheng Lei fan like me.. he does not disappoint in this.. his acting is always on point.. gorgeous and manly as ever 💜 This was a wonderful show to watch and I highly recommend it. Rewatch value? Yes I'd rewatch it again 💜

Hello! How are you? Fine .. thank-you... and you ?

After Guardians of the dafeng in cdrama and Mr. Queen in kdrama.. this was the only transmigration plot that had checked all the boxes for me. While writing most transmigration series, writers forget that their protagonist travelled through a time-space wrap and it's inevitable for them to carry that modern aura and attitude .. it's almost impossible for them to not use their modern habits and ideas no matter in which time zone or book/game world they end up in. I am glad this fact wasn't ignored here. The protagonists used their limited knowledge of the book script they entered as well as their modern knowledge to combat the challenges they faced in this foreign world. There were a few more twists like ML and FL (vamp in the book plot) traveled 16 years apart when she entered the plot he was already there for so long that his real life seemed like a dream to him. Her arrival was actually the point when he realised he doesn't belong to this world. Second was the arrival of another FL (real FL in the book).
It was pleasant to see that the writer emphasised less on bitch fights and unnecessary misunderstandings' cliche instead kept the pace smooth with logic and organic issues. Cherry on top was their idea of developing modern weapon prototypes to fight the war in that ancient setting... Chef's kiss.

The cast was fantastic. Chu Ran absolutely owned the FL character .. She was beautiful, charming, witty, spontaneous, and kind, ...just so lively and real. And then there’s Ryan Cheng, who surprised me in the best way. I had previously seen him in My Journey to You and The Legend of the Female General, where he mostly played quiet, serious, straight-faced characters. This time, he was talkative, energetic, and genuinely fun.His shifts between tyrant king and playful CEO were amazing. Plus the way his character unfolds from tyrant king to transmigrating modern CEO to someone who spent 16 long years in this dimension kept me second guessing.
Their chemistry was so natural and genuine... For two people stuck in a dangerous world with only each other for emotional survival. When every step might lead to doom, falling for the only person who truly understands you feels almost inevitable. And these two delivered it beautifully… ✨
And it was so cute watching him feed her... putting berries, grapes, plums or whatnot in her mouth all the time ..like he wasn't just showing love but straight up spoiling her. And to top it all He even built a tunnel from his bed chamber to her palace ... Seriously that was so sweet even beating the feeling of carrying her in your arms and flying in the sky as many xianxia wuxia couples do. Ahh !! So magical ...

Other than the writing and the cast, the styling department also deserves a praise. Just look at the FL’s outfits, her makeup, and all those delicate accessories. What a visual treat!!! Honestly, she looked like some divine goddess Absolutely mind-blowing.
And those nail or fingertip ornaments she wore, I’m not even sure what they’re officially called, but they were stunning. They added such an elegant, almost regal touch to her whole look. Every detail, from the fabrics to the jewelry, felt exquisite. Big shoutout to the styling dept. 🫰💫

And giving the remaining credit where it is due .. the 'music dept' .. BGM was outstanding ... All the songs were beautifully soothing and melodious but the show stopper was that last song of battle ... Full marks for that song alone.

To sum it all ..this was the type of drama I can proudly recommend ..go watch it ..enjoy it

Meu novo favorito!

A pretty drama with a pretty cast that lived up to my expectations

My first ongoing C-drama in 2026. I’ve been waiting for this drama since I discovered Cheng Lei last year, and it doesn’t disappoint! I’ve never read the novel, the manhwa, nor watched the donghua, so I’m watching the drama as an original viewer lol.
I love it so much! I kind of lost track at the beginning of the plot. I mean, I know Prince Duan and the Empress Dowager are the villains, but their “slaves” (the ministers and allies) were all confusing me hahaha. I think I need more experience with politics and the monarch system in Chinese costume dramas (but come on, maybe I was just too tired to concentrate, because I digested Legend of Zang Hai just fine last year).

Anyway, I started the drama because of Cheng Lei, and he lived up to my expectations. His acting was just wow. When he switched his tyrant mode on, I was so scared. The angst… the backstory… when he silently cried inside for Zhang San’s memories, when Uncle Bei was gone, when he tried not to get emotionally attached to the other 2D characters… I cried with him :(((. I watched a lot of his dramas last year, and he set a new standard, at least for me.
Wang Chu Ran was also doing great with her role. She SUITS YU WANYIN TO THE BONE. The comedy was executed well, too. It’s not cringey, it suits the plot, and it IS funny. All the details of the modern “innovations” they brought to the palace, hahahahah I LOVE IT. As expected, my hotpot couple lol.

Praise to Wang Chu Ran as well, because what she portrayed is not just a pretty lucky girl holding spoilers from the book and trying to survive in the palace, but someone who actually made her power useful. I like how Yu Wanyin is such an F person (I mean her MBTI lol), because that’s what balances the soulless Xiahou Dan. She ‘undead’ him, wow.

Annndd, I need to make another paragraph for the visual production. IT IS AMAZING. I love how they threw red into the costumes, the makeup, the VISUALS. Xiahou Dan’s style is perfect. I love all the colors of his robes, the red-black one, the purple, the green, even the white at the Empress Dowager’s funeral. The hair is also good. I mean, I know C-costume dramas always deliver with long hair, but this one is just too good. Also, WANG CHU RAN, YOU PRETTY GIRL. I am not a fan of her, but I know I need to compliment her this time. The dresses… I mean, ALL HER CLOTHES ARE AMAZING. I love her makeup, her hairstyles, her sparkling accessories, even her silk pajamas lol. And COME ON, I REPLAYED THE EMPRESS STRUT LIKE FOUR TIMES?? The crown, the dress, the tail ARGH, SHE’S BEAUTIFUL. And I saved her photo in that costume, the one Cheng Lei posted on Weibo. You know which one lol.

So, I’m glad I’m watching How Dare You while it’s ongoing, because I’m embracing all the hype and replaying the clips on my timeline since I don’t want to move on yet. One thing, though: the ending might be disappointing for some people (especially novel readers), because it’s just too short (noooooo), but I’m slowly accepting it :D.
I’ve seen worse endings for this kind of transmigration story lol. At least we got that iconic HI HOW ARE YOU I’M FINE THANK YOU AND YOU (and adult Zhang San in pretty styling) arrrggghhhh!

Excellent drama! Wang Churan and Cheng Lei are sensational! If they don't act in another drama together it will be a crime! Everyone in the cast was great! I only have a few things that keep this from being a 10/10 story.

About half way through, I was worried the story was going to fall flat, because I just wasn't as engaged with what was happened on screen. The forth wall breaks from the first few episodes was a breath of fresh air, and felt like a commentary on c-dramas in general. When they stopped and the typical tropes c-dramas fall into started frequently happening, I thought I might have to drop this one. But the story quickly picked back up and I was eagerly anticipating each episode drop!

My gripe with the music is more just with c-drama music in general. The overuse of songs bores me. I get it, more songs is more money spent, but I get tired of hearing the same motifs over and over again. This music in this drama is fine. I just got bored with it.

Overall, a very enjoyable drama! Kudos to Wang Churan and Cheng Lei! They truly were wonderfully cast! Their chemistry was electric! Wanyin and Dan were such lovely characters, and they brought them to life perfectly!

The Most Entertaining Potboiler of 2026!!

How are you?

Fine! Thank you!

This was the silliest yet the most entertaining show I have watched in a long time. Essentially, a transmigration trope, “How Dare You!” places three different characters who seem to have transmigrated from variant timelines into the novel they were reading. Transmigration shows aren’t anything new when it comes to the Chinese industry, but in most shows, only one character transmigrates. This show bears the novelty of not one, but three characters transmigrating into the novel. Sadly only two of them survive until the last. Unlike most transmigration shows, we have not one but two antagonists. The poor main leads spend most of their time squaring off with their defiant charades. Either way, their dynamics are off-the-charts, the storytelling is crisp, and the chemistry is a chef’s kiss. I’m a huge fan of Ryan Cheng, he is mostly used to playing serious characters, so his Zhang San was a welcome change. This was my first time watching Wang Chu Ran. She is beautiful; everything from her costumes to makeup was obviously tailored to enhance her good looks. They make a visually striking couple, which adds charm to this entertaining potboiler!

A META-GAME OF SURVIVAL

The story follows Wang Cuihua, a modern-day corporate worker who transmigrated into a novel as the 'evil consort' Yu Wanyin. She quickly realizes the 'tyrant emperor', Xianhou Dan, is actually another transmigrator named Zhang San. Instead of fighting each other, they realize that to survive the original tragic ending, they must team up. They use their modern knowledge, ranging from strategic management to drought-resistant crops, to outsmart the 'original' protagonists, who are actually quite ruthless.

Furthermore, the chemistry between Cheng Lei and Wang Churan is electric. Unlike dramas where the leads are at odds for 30 episodes, these two establish a 'mischievous bestie' energy early on. Their mutual trust is refreshing; they communicate quickly to nip misunderstandings in the bud before they become plot points. The show is packed with meta-commentary. Since both leads know they are in a book, they often critique the 'bad writing' of the original author or anticipate 'scripted' events. This adds a layer of dark comedy, making the political intrigue feel lighter and more engaging. Watching the 'evil' consort and the 'tyrant' emperor actually be the most competent and sane people in the room is deeply satisfying. The drama flips the script by making the traditional 'hero and heroine' of the book into the primary antagonists.

Moreover, Cheng Lei delivers a masterclass in the 'Mad Tyrant' trope. His ability to switch between a terrifying, unhinged emperor and the vulnerable, modern 'Zhang San' is the heart of the show. His 'eye-smolder' has become a viral meme for a reason: it's magnetic. For Wang Churan, this is arguably her best performance to date. She sheds the 'ice beauty' image to play a quick-thinking, slightly cynical corporate survivor. Her comedic timing during the 'English Language Test' scene in early episodes set the tone for the series. The production is cinematic, utilizing a darker, more 'moody' color palette than the bright, saturated looks of previous years. The costumes, especially Wanyin's consort robes, are intricate and historically grounded, even while the plot is fantastical.

However, mid-episode pacing felt a little bit dragged. The leads occasionally drift into the background to make room for the political schemes of Prince Duan. While necessary for the plot, the loss of the leads' mischievous bestie energy during these episodes makes the show feel like a standard, slightly drier historical drama. Also, fans of the Donghua and novel were polarized by the changes to the character Uncle Bei. The Live-Action took a slightly more 'realistic' route with his arc, which stripped away some of the campy humor that made the character a cult favorite in other versions.

In conclusion, How Dare You!? succeeds because it is self-aware. It knows it's a story about stories. It balances dark political stakes with the absurdity of two modern people trying to navigate a 'buggy' historical novel. And I feel like the ending makes a lot of sense to me. The leads entered a book and began solving court cases while also trying to survive. They have gone through a lot of setbacks, and still fell in love along the way. Both main leads uprooted evil and gave the Great Xia the peace they longed for, and had a happy ending. That's the end of the book, so it makes absolute sense that they travel back into the real world. Although it was a happy ending, I wish to see them interact in the real world and the life of Zhang San in this dimension.

Finished it just to finish it but it wasn’t so bad

The series lacked the punch for me; there were times I either skipped scenes and dialogues or I scrolled on my phone even while it was on. Thirty-two episodes is a little too long for this one in my opinion, and though I loved even the recurring side characters and I love that the actors were given much screentime for it, some scenes just felt a little too draggy for me. The final battle felt too quick to be resolved and the last two episodes felt like it just kept going on.

On the bright side, it was still entertaining enough for me to not drop it midway, but I definitely just finished the series just so I finished it and can move on already.

Brilliant Acting and Costumes but Romance Needs More Screen Time

After binge-watching several of Ryan Chang’s dramas in 2025, I was really looking forward to How Dare You?

That trailer looked so promising. But they did us so dirty, including all that romance into the teaser material and not into the actual drama.

The early episodes were great—fast-paced and filled with action, with our leads getting plenty of screen time while pretending to be a couple while doing their shenanigans. However, after episode 10, things started to slow down considerably. Suddenly, supporting characters, who were not all that interesting to begin with, got way too much screen time. Those dragged-out scenes really could have been cut down simply to get the point across and not hog my TV.

I felt like I was watching less of a romance drama and more of a political drama with slight romance 2/3 of the scram a. The leads hardly interacted in the middle stretch of the drama. And there was a considerable lack of romantic situations, which was disappointing since the trailer set up expectations for a lot more romance.

Sure, there were some great emotional moments between our couple—like the intense post library fire scene early in the drama—so it was frustrating when romance took a backseat for many episodes. With all the intrigues and unnecessary character scheming being spoon fed to us as if we couldn’t read between the lines, it felt like those elements could have been implied rather than shown. It seemed like many characters were added just to be killed off.

And yes, be prepared – people drop like flies here. People who waste the screen for the third of the drama. I don’t mind it sometimes when the characters are interesting, but as I’ve said, maybe only one or two were actually interesting.

In the middle, it felt like I was waiting forever for anything to happen again between Xiahou Dan & Yu Wan Yin. They were just going in circles.

Things pick up a little bit in episode 19. Romance picks up in episode 20. Finally.

After episode 25 the plot picks up too and becomes interesting. Episode 30 has some great military action sequence. We get some really cool visuals of Xiahou Dan in disguise. A must rewatch scene right before they take the capital.

The addition of characters like Flower was cute, and I wish she had been introduced earlier. Even though she is not who she is she says. I think she was one of those interesting characters that I like to see in the dramas.

The final seven episodes are mostly satisfying, though the last two dragged a bit. Still, everyone who was still alive had their stories wrapped up reasonably well.

That said, some plot points—like Xiahou Dan's character and the fate of the little crown prince—are frustratingly overlooked. It feels like important elements were introduced but never fully explored. I mean, the guy spent half his life in this world which was mostly hell for him. Why Yu Wan Yin never asked Xiahou Dan about his actual biological son after she found out how long he had been inside the novel world beats me. I think any woman would ask, considering how he treated the boy. Yes, he has his reasons. Yes they showed us what happened in a very quick two second snippet that some may have overlooked, but Yu Wan Yin did not see that snippet. So I’m just wondering whether the writers introduced this bit but then glossed over it. Actually, I don’t think they glossed over it. I think they just ignored it. If you introduce something this difficult, then you need to really close this topic properly.

Another thing I did not really get is why make Xie Yong Er from a completely different world. I just did not see the point. Again if you introduce this bit, explore it better. Otherwise, just make it from the same world as the rest of the characters who transmigrated.

In summary, this is a good drama, but I’ve seen better. The pacing is all over the place, especially in the middle, where side characters take up too much valuable screen time that could have been better spent on the leads. If you're a fan of the lead actors, you will enjoy it, but if you're looking for heavy romance, you'll find How Dare You? May know that satisfy your craving.

I also want to comment on acting in this drama.

Acting here was amazing from pretty much everyone. That includes all the child actors.

Ryan Chang here is on fire. He is one of those versatile actors who really shines no matter what kind of emotion he has to play. But he is particularly good costume dramas. In this drama, his emperor has a unique dark tragic aura, and his performance in emotional scenes adds extra depth that makes you empathize with his character. He is just as good in comedic moments.

I also really enjoyed the soundtrack.

Another thing I really liked is that this is one of probably a few C-dramas where you see both characters with hair undone and without their outwear going too bad. I mean, they literally look like they’re wearing sleepwear and their hair is down. Everyone knows this a unicorn in Asian costume dramas. They also don’t make a fuss about sleeping in one bed. They gotta do what they gotta do so they just do it without being prude about it. Also a unicorn situation.

The cast are amazing

Initially i watched this because of Ryan but stayed because of the story and the supporting cast.

I cringed during romantic scenes because i felt that the ML and FL's chemistry vibe was more of a "friendly-type" but the comedic scenes, especially the hotpot ones are enjoyable. The scenes with their friends are my favorite.

The supporting cast did a great job in portraying their roles, amazing actors and actresses 👏👏👏👏👏 Some roles might have been short but i still cried when they "went home".

I cried a lot in this drama. I have watched a lot of cdrama already but this show felt unique and different to me.
