In 1682, Gu Yan Wu attempted to return home but fell from his horse due to old age. In his final moments, he recalled his life: witnessing the fall of the Southern Ming, vowing never to serve the Qing, and enduring imprisonment for his anti-Qing stance. Though he identified as a Ming loyalist, he sent his disciple to the Qing examination. Before his death, he posed a final question to Emperor Kangxi: "What is the destruction of a country, and what is the destruction of the world?"
