멋진 신세계 ‧ Drama ‧ 2026

It was on episode 1 .. she went from touching the blond woman's hair to screaming when she saw a black man .. so basically I thought the plot was dumb so was gonna keep watching for some humor, then got this. dropping.

Context is very important in this case, she was already stunned from the blond, the phone, and seeing her actual face. Correct me if I’m wrong but did anyone in Joseon in the 1300s know who black people were? (The earliest entry I can see is the 1500s) - source https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veritable_Records_of_the_Joseon_Dynasty

Arguably, aren’t many Asians stunned going to the extent of photographing black people out and about in this day and age?

In answer to your question. No it wasn’t meant to be funny that she screamed at the black man. It was meant to be ridiculous

The very next moment she laughed to herself commenting it must be the tales of the distant lands she read in her etiquette lessons so pretty sure it wasn't meant to be offensive. But I did understand why it might feel that way

I don't think it was the black himself, Joseon era only Koreans i bet she never seen any other ethnicity, she was also shocked by the white girl....so it was about the different races IMO which is understandable

Hmmm... Why would you go that far? She didn't discriminate against that woman or man, she was shocked by all the foreigners. As she had probably never seen a non-Korean person I her whole life. She was literally scared of everything. And since they were in a touristy location, of course there are tourists from all around the world.

yup I noticed this too and was surprised (and disappointed) that no one else mentioned it... it was absolutely unnecessary

omg ofc someone had to get offended, others have already stated my thoughts so i won't be repetitive but anyway chill my bro

Wait which episode was that? Cause in ep.1 she only sees the white european ladies?

episode 1 that's a tourist area where they were filming there were multiple ethnicities

I noticed it, but I chose not to interpret her reaction as offensive. Normally, in time slip dramas, they depict the future with modern technology - Giant LED screens, segways etc. The future is represented by prolific and saturated amounts of technology. So I actually appreciated that the drama chose to use diversity as a way to show not only how time has progressed but also recognise how Seoul has also moved forward.

There was just one guy. People can find anything to critique.

FL's story begins in the Joseon Dynasty, roughly 1726, the 6th year of the fictional King Anjong's reign (mirroring the real 2nd year of King Yeongjo's rule). Joseon at this time was famously isolationist, so much so that it became known as the Hermit Kingdom. Foreign contact was was actively banned by the government.

As a court lady confined to the Inner Court, FL's entire world was the palace. Her knowledge of the outside came only through books, scrolls, court gossip, and paintings. The most "foreign" face she might have glimpsed would have been a Chinese or Japanese envoy and even they only passed through the Outer Court, where the King received male officials and diplomats. Women like FL never went there.

Any non-East Asian features she had ever encountered existed only in folklore, and that folklore was not kind or accurate. Westerners referred to as Yanggwi ("Western Ghosts") or Hong-mo-in ("Red-Haired People") were described as barbarians from the edge of the earth. Their deep-set eyes, high nose bridges, and light or reddish hair were compared to Gwishin (ghosts) in the stories passed around court.

Dark-skinned people fared no better in these tales; officially, Joseon court records sometimes described foreign vessels as carrying evil spirits, and folklore borrowed from that fear. Dark skin was not understood as ethnicity it was attributed to black magic, severe burning, or Heuk-gwi (black demons/sea ghosts).

Even the Dokkaebi (Korean goblins) in older legends were described as towering figures with unnatural, frightening appearances.

It's worth noting that these folk stories were never firsthand accounts. They traveled through sailors and traders to storytellers like a game of telephone by the time they reached court ladies in the Inner Palace, they had been filtered through fear, imagination, and political agenda. FL's reaction is not malice or racist.

First, take a moment to realize that at her time and place, seeing a black man is the same as seeing a car, and she was understandably shocked at both. It would be ridiculous to act like seeing a differently colored person for the first time isn't shocking, whether black or white. This might not be the case in Africa, not because black people wouldn't be surprised if they saw a white person for the first time, but because Africa is so close to where white people reside, so they have been mingling with them for almost as long as their time on Earth. East Asians on the other hand are too far away to see any black people walking around at that time. It's not like she was shocked because she thought he would kill her, it's because it is a totally new skin color that would appear to her as if he was wearing a full mask.

Second, she was not specifically shocked at the black man, she was already running away from the white women, and he with a group of similarly strange people were on her way.
