"A fire hearth would be nice..." says Minase Alice, as she prepares the charcoal kotatsu. On a quiet New Year's Eve, she and Harumi stand in the kitchen making New Year's Eve soba noodles. As the New Year dawns, Alice and Harumi are preparing to make rice cakes with a wooden mortar that Harunobu brought. The two are awkward at first, but gradually they find their rhythm and start pounding the rice cakes. They spend a leisurely time eating the freshly pounded rice cakes on the porch.
