As time passes, Zifu gives birth to a third daughter. When the temple of their great ancestor Liu Bang is burned down, the palace inhabitants wear plain clothes in mourning. Zifu’s eldest daughter, the Grand Princess Wei, gets into trouble when she is caught wearing colourful tassels by Chen Jiao. Empress Dou orders Zifu to weave mourning silk as punishment. The concubines of the back palace help Zifu in support and care for her. When Empress Dou falls critically ill, she says her goodbyes. She hopes that when Zifu rules the back palace one day, she will let Chen Jiao off easy. With Empress Dou’s death, Liu Che appoints his uncle Tian Fen as prime minister to atone for the wrongdoings Empress Dou had inflicted on Empress Wang.
