Simple story made great by chemistry and greater ending

I didn’t expect to love this story more than I expected but i freaking did. There’s no green tea or abuse or any misunderstanding which already makes it a bit above average (i know the bar is that low). Also, there’s no dragging moments so I didn’t feel the need to skip.

What I love
1. The actors. I watched this for Wang Yilei cos I’m into him lately but I’m completely taken by the female lead, Zhu Xiao Xue. She’s so pretty and there’s something refreshing about her. I think she’s a new actress cos her dramalist and chinesemov profile doesn’t have much drama yet but I completely adore her. I think she might be able to pull off a seductress role too cos she just has that natural charm. All actors other than the leads were great too. My next fave would probably be the rich heiress. Sure she was the 3rd party but like she said, it was the bf choice to cheat.

2. Characters. The characterization were surprisingly well done and all the actors added depth to their characters story. You’ll even understand the ex bf’s motive for doing what he did. Sure it wasn’t justified but it was completely realistic. I also absolutely love that they didn’t give FL’s mother a redemption. Sure she said sorry in the end but I don’t think it’s because she regret anything but more of guilt.

3. Chemistry. Okay so I first saw this on dailymotion and saw the first scene of Wang Yilei crying and the FL gently kissing him. Even without subs, I got hooked and immediately went to find a subbed video. They don’t have that much love scene except for kissing but their chemistry was so good I keep smiling unconsciously. I really really love that there was no great misunderstanding between them and even when they were in conflict (just one episode really), they still didn’t hurt each other and tried to understand each other’s perspective (yes the bar is that low).

4. Ending. This is probably one of the best endings I’ve seen. There’s no great revelation or anything and it’s probably normal compared to others but in the world of cdramas where the main couple just resolved their misunderstanding or got together 2 mins away from the ending, this is already freaking great. I got a bit nervous cos the second to the last episode already resolved all their issues and there was still an episode left. To my surprise it’s what the Chinese termed as “dog food”. I. Love. It.

What I dislike:
Not that I dislike it but I would have liked if they added more details on the case. It’s just a timeskip and boom everything’s resolved.

Fave scenes: when FL’s grandma pelted the ex-bf with fruits (that he brought lmao) and then acted like angel when greeting ML. Another one is when FL stood up for ML against his dad

She brought brains. He brought trauma. The script brought confusion.

As I’m still quite new to the world of “duanju” dramas (having watched fewer than two dozen), I don’t recognize many of the actors. But I was instantly captivated by Wang Yi Lei and Zhu Xiao Xue’s respective performances as a top lawyer and an ambitious law student. Clearly, they tried their best to work with the material they were given, which I must say wasn’t the greatest to begin with.

Their mutual dependence and the way they “cured” each other was heartwarming, but their initial encounter left me unconvinced. However, I think the show unfairly portrayed “cheating”, making the ex-boyfriend seem far worse than Wen Yue, despite their similar actions. Granted, Han Sheng kissed Wen Yue, despite her not being his partner, an act that could be interpreted as forced. In this situation, I’m unsure why we’re expected to excuse them simply because they’re the endgame.

Regardless, I think a stronger focus on Wen Yue’s prowess as a law student would have improved the show. We got a glimpse of her intelligence at the beginning, specifically when she first met Han Sheng at that party. I wished they had explored that more fully in the drama, maybe even having her help Han Sheng with his cases. Time constraints likely prevented them from doing so, but the plot contains too much unnecessary redundancy, such as the ex-boyfriend’s interactions with the socialite.

Overall, my feelings about this drama are a bit conflicted. Its quality is unremarkable; neither good nor bad, so I will settle for a “decent effort,” mostly kudos to the main leads.
