Beautiful Xianxia Love Story of A Dragon King and a Taoist Girl!

Back from the brink is light and fast-paced romance, xianxia!
It's a beautiful xianxia story of a dragon king, who got hurt by love but still learned to love again and found his true love in a kind-hearted Taoist girl.
If you were a fan of Love Between Fairy and Devil, I highly suggest watching this drama as the original stories are made by the same author, Jiu Lu Fei Xiang (九鹭非香)

STORY:

Dragon King Tianyao gets betrayed on his wedding day by the woman he was going to marry, a Taoist called Suying from Guanghan Sect. She dismembered him and tried to steal his heart protecting scale and inner core, which are the main sources of his powers. He combines them and tosses the heart protecting scale away.
The heart protecting scale went inside a little baby girl, who was abandoned because of her weak heart. Yanhui got to live thanks to the heart protecting scale and was picked by Master Lingxiao of Chengxing Sect.
Yanhui gets expelled from the sect and soon is kidnapped by Tianyao. Tianyao had noticed that Yanhui had the heart protecting scale inside of her. Tianyao wants to find his body parts and needs the help of Yanhui, and they start their journey of finding his body parts.
Yanhui and Tianyao slowly fall in love with each other in the midst of the chaos.

SPOILER PART OF THE STORY & MY OPINION:

Tianyao and Yanhui had a couple of misunderstandings in the drama, which were understandable. I feel like Back from the brink was a great drama, but in my opinion it was lacking just a certain spice. I feel like Yanhui and Tianyao fell in love a little bit too early, and I was a little disappointed how both of their weddings weren't because of their mutual feelings. The wedding in Qingqiu was beautiful but for me, it was a little ruined due to Yanhui's attitude, it was understandable but at the same time disappointing, knowing that she was very much in love with Tianyao but hurt by him at the same time and thus wasn't excited at all that she was going to marry Tianyao. The drama was filmed beautifully, and the outfits were cute. It was fun and light for a xianxia. Yanhui wasn't annoying or naive, and Tianyao wasn't the typical "VERY cold and stern main lead".

ACTING:

Neo Hou as Tianyao,
His acting was great! There's just something in the way he looks so naive and kind yet strong at the same time. A great pick for this role.

Zhou Ye as Yanhui
She was great as Yanhui. Her crying scenes were the best in this drama! She was very believable.

Riley Wang as Bai Xiao Sheng,
The black horse who surprised me time and time again. His acting just stood out the most to me due to his mischievous and mysterious presence. I wished for his happiness the most, since Bai Xiao Sheng had suffered the most ever since his childhood.

Overall a 8!

Could have been so much better

This drama had a nice plotline but the execution and story telling really was disappointing. It lacked depth n intrigue, I wasn't much excited to watch it but I somehow watched it n completed becos i just had nothing more exciting to watch rn. Love story wise it was total disappointment, I didn't feel anything for them as couple, no chemistry too, acting wise evryone was jst okayish, but ml lacked proper expression n so most of the times I felt confused as to whether he is angry, sad, jealous, worried or what as he had only 2 expressions most of the times. But he did well as baby dragon though. I enjoyed him in that part . Riley Wang shined in his role n fl did well too. Idk as the show ended I didn't feel much attached or sad that it ended like i feel for few shows I loved n rewatched , so I don't think I will rewatch this one.

A tale of trust and betrayal

This drama is all about Tianyao, the Millenium spirit dragon, who has faced betrayal at the time of his marriage and swears never to love again. But through Yanhui,he again dares to fall in love who in return vows to help him find his missing body parts.
The plot was good. The way the sequences unfolded, the difficulties they overcame, how they found the body parts, unlocked the seal and ended the evil in this world was portrayed nicely.
Neo Hou and Zhou Ye did a good job in their roles. The friendship aspect was also good.
The costumes, sets, music, fights, supporting actors were all good.
This drama is sure entertaining and you will not regret watching it.

Oh. My. Dragon.

Betrayed and dismembered by the woman he once loved, the ancient dragon Tianyao is reborn with one goal: collect his scattered body parts and take back what was stolen from him. His heart protection scale ends up inside Yan Hui, a seemingly ordinary but spirited girl who unknowingly becomes the key to breaking his seal. Tianyao approaches her with a plan to use her, retrieve his bones, and exact revenge. Yan Hui, sensing danger, tries to run but fate has other plans. As they travel together, secrets unravel, truths about Yan Hui’s origins surface, and somewhere between revenge and survival, love quietly grows.

Three episodes in, I was like, okay… this is decent. Not the kind of drama that grabs your collar and screams “YOU MUST BINGE ME,” but also not the type that makes you scroll your phone mid episode. It held my attention just enough. A comfortable start, like dipping your toes into dragon fire and realizing it is warm, not scalding.

Hou Minghao and Zhou Ye carried those early episodes on pure charisma. Hou Minghao as Tianyao exudes this quiet, mature power. He is charismatic without trying too hard, restrained yet intense. Not shameless like Ji Bozai, not a love fool like Lu Jiang Lai. This dragon king is composed, aloof, and surprisingly simple minded in emotional matters. He feels deeply but guards it like national treasure. Zhou Ye as Yan Hui is the perfect contrast. She is loud, bright, skilled in martial arts, and yet there is that “I am just a girl” softness in her expressions. They complement each other beautifully. Also, her dry hair ends distracted me a little at first, but that is a minor battle in a war of dragons.

Baby dragon Tianyao is ridiculously cute. Hou Minghao switching from dignified Dragon King to jealous baby dragon is range. His big eyes, his expressions, the subtle difference in styling between adult and baby dragon forms were well done, though the chin makeup could have been cleaner in some shots.

The CGI is a 50 50 situation. Some scenes are stunning, others feel like the green screen is waving hello. But the costumes? Chef’s kiss. I especially love how the spirits retain animal features on their heads. It gives off Disney Halloween energy and I mean that in the best way possible.

The fox incense arc in episodes 5 and 6 had me nervous. Love potion plots can easily spiral into frustration city. I was worried Yan Hui would fall in love under a spell and we would be stuck in that loop for ten episodes. Thankfully, the drama said nope. The resolution was quick, clear, and digestible. Wang Peng Yuan explained everything with Tianyao present, antidote delivered, spell broken before my anxiety could fully bloom. I appreciate a drama that knows when to exit a trope.

Then comes Dragon Valley. Oh. My. Dragon. This was peak fangirl territory for me. The little elves, especially the tiny girl, Yan Hui bickering with them, Tianyao’s soft gaze as if he adopted a whole kindergarten overnight. It felt like one big found family. The set design was adorable and matched Tianyao’s charming aura. The jealousy threads were delicious too. Bai Xiaosheng playing cupid, then regretting it. Bai Xiaosheng falling for Yan Hui. Tianyao being quietly jealous. It was chaotic, fluffy, and I was seated with popcorn.

There was one hair brushing scene in Dragon Valley that could have been smoother. A leaf falls on Yan Hui’s hair, Tianyao removes it, she panics, he brushes her hair and she says in her world only husbands can brush their wives’ hair. I understand the intention, but the leaf setup made it feel awkward. Still, that payoff later in episode 27 when he repeats the line and she kisses him? Butterflies activated. When Yan Hui hugged him and repeatedly confessed “ wǒ xǐhuān nǐ,” I was giggling like a teenager. Their chemistry was chemistrying.

Bai Xiaosheng deserves appreciation. A gray character done right. He starts as cupid for his own gain, falls in love with the girl he tried to push toward someone else, and ends up risking everything to keep her alive. Even placing her under the control of the Lord of Dark Aura to save her life. The fact that Yan Hui does not hate him for it shows her emotional maturity. She understands intention. Also, her slapping the Lord of Dark Aura’s head repeatedly for hurting her heart was comedy gold. Our girl stays bright even in darkness.

Now we need to talk about the heart stab. When Tianyao forcefully took back the heart protection scale and stabbed Yan Hui, I was speechless. The betrayal mirrored what Suying did to him. I was angry. Yes, the scale was originally his. Yes, he wanted to save his elves and avenge innocent lives. But communication, sir. A simple explanation might have changed everything. The fact that he did it when they were already close made it worse. If he had done it in the early episodes, I would have shrugged. But at that stage? Emotional damage.

What satisfied me though was how the aftermath was handled. Yan Hui did not magically forgive him overnight. She was scared. Truly scared. Not cold on the outside but secretly longing. She was traumatized. That felt real. And Tianyao did not force forgiveness. He apologized, realized the depth of her fear, and stepped back. He helped her quietly, gave her space, and even considered playing cupid for her and Bai Xiaosheng if that meant her freedom from the Lord of Dark Aura. That maturity is so rare in male leads. Growth king behavior.

The marriage plot for the Ghostly Eulogy translation gave me mixed feelings. I am not a huge fan of forced proximity when the emotional wounds are still fresh. Tianyao looked delighted. Yan Hui treated it as an act. It felt slightly unfair to her. I would have preferred if the marriage happened after she willingly opened her heart again. That said, Tianyao preparing dowries and taking it seriously was very on brand for his sincere nature.

The logic surrounding the nine stars, heart protection scale, and dark flower magic was confusing at first, but I will give the drama credit. Just when I thought there was a plot hole, the next scene usually clarified it. Tianyao giving Yan Hui his nine stars to redirect fatal damage to himself, planning ahead for her safety, softened my anger toward him. Again, communication could have saved everyone a lot of tears.

The antagonists shift throughout the drama. I initially thought Suying would be the ultimate villain, but then we get the Lord of Dark Aura and Chanlang. The transition felt a bit like two dramas stitched together. Suying’s obsession with Lu Musheng remains questionable to me. For such a powerful Taoist, she is unbelievably obsessed over Lu Musheng for reasons that do not feel proportionate to what we were shown. A brief childhood rescue and a thermal jug reunion does not justify world burning madness. Her revival arc later felt unnecessary and anticlimactic.

The Taoist clan frustrated me more than any demon. Hypocrisy levels were high. Watching them corner Yan Hui without listening was infuriating. I was especially disappointed in Lingxiao. Which made it incredibly satisfying when Yan Hui mastered the Ghostly Eulogy, became the Lady of Dark Aura, and casually overpowered everyone at Chengxin.

As for the ending, I have mixed feelings. The scale of Yan Hui sacrificing herself to eliminate the Lord of Dark Aura was grand, but the execution felt rushed. The villagers following her to Misty Village did not add much. Tianyao slicing air dramatically while she did the heavy lifting was… a choice. And then the final minutes. Everyone else gets closure and screen time. Yan Hui appears briefly, offers Tianyao baozi, and that is it? I needed more. Do they remember everything? What changed? Give me answers, not just buns.

Despite the uneven CGI, the questionable villain arcs, and an ending that left me with more questions than the Ghostly Eulogy itself, this drama grew on me. It made me laugh. It made me anxious in a good way. It gave me a mature male lead who understands space and accountability, and a female lead who does not forgive just because love exists. Their chemistry is chemistrying. Dragon Valley lives rent free in my head.
Back From the Brink may not be perfect, but it gave me butterflies, baby dragons, and a heroine who slaps dark lords in the head. And honestly, that is already entertaining in my book. This drama is messy at times, but its emotional core is strong enough to carry it.

ok the main thing abt back from the brink are the visual ahh leads. Like sometimes when the plot was getting awfully draggy their faces saved it. Zhou Ye and Hou Minghao are literally a match made in heaven lookswise. Back from the Brink is an in part tradgedy and with parts of humour too. However I feel like 40 episodes was a little long as the interest in watching kind of fell off and on. The main bonus from this was Neo playing baby Tianyao: why was he so good at it?!? Like he could go from solemn Millenium Spirit Dragon from baby Tianyao looking innocent and wide-eyed. Props to him for playing it so well. I almost couldn't believe it. About Zhou Ye, I feel like her style in every drama is about the same. Funny, cutsey and just "her". Anyways, all in all, an 8 from me, not bad but not amazing. (p.s. the only reason I watched this was bc I've watched Zhou Ye before and wanted to figure out why Hou Minghao is so loved on MDL. Like ???) (Ignore my rating for music, unless it's really good I just put a two for everything)

Brings out the emotional side of one's being!!!

The title would definitely be like of course it does bring out the emotion but what about it? Of course it did not make me cry as much as the red sleeve did or made me laugh as much as the business proposal and it didn't make me binge watch it as much like the lighter and the princess nor was it a hidden gem like fall in love but it had all of this...
It started out strong and finished strong... It's not easy to do that but it actually did.
The characters were superb I actually did not know the FL before this and now I am a fan .. Neo Hou well the last time I enjoyed his show was a girl like me and he has come a way from that show and boy I'm I glad I decided to give it a chance...
Bai xiaosheng was the one character that made me like and dislike him the whole drama and I prefer him here to song of the moon....

The OST!!! Oh my loved it not all songs are worth remembering compared to hotel de Luna or even the long ballad in my pov but it's OST is better than most this past year....

The whole drama as a whole was really nice... All I can say is that it is worth watching and the romance as a whole was not too little and not too much just enough seasoning...

What I did not like was that somewhere in the middle it kind of lost its plotline and scattered its plotline but got along its path eventually...
The millenium spirit dragon was not as strong as I hoped and imagined him to be...now that was a disappointed!!! He was saved by his woman most of the time but the upside was he would rather save her first in lieu of his life which was unexpected loved it

Would you chose to save the one person you love or the whole world????

YanHui is best girl!

I LOVE this show very much! It is def in my top 5 favorite C-Drama of the new era (80s & 90s will always be considered the golden era in my opinion). I needed a show to love after LBFAD & the Starry Love showed up! I needed another show to get me over the Starry Love, and Back from the Brink premiered!

I appreciated the growth of the characters individually as well as the growths shown in the different relationships. It was not love at first sight for the leads and they didn’t have an antagonistic relationship for the sake of tension or drama. The development of the relationship between the leads was gradual, organic, and mature. The choices they made made sense. The ML is great but honestly the FL in this story was what made it a top tier show. Yan Hui was such a good, well rounded female character. She was smart, strong, and kind. She was also not afraid to show emotions and let people know how she felt. Her communications skills were the best- I appreciated it so much because I hate miscommunication tropes that lead to misunderstandings. In this show, the leads, especially Yanhui, were pretty honest with each other. YanHui was always upfront with her love, her hate, and her fears. She is so far one of my favorite FL.

The supporting characters were interesting too and none of them outstayed their welcome. I was worried about the 2ML and how his story would play out but I am so glad that they didn’t do anything stupid with him. He didn’t automatically fall in love with the FL but when he did, I understood why. It made sense and I loved how their relationship also developed. And most importantly, the friendship between the women in the show was also the reason why I enjoyed this show so much. I HATE HATE HATE it when the FL have no women as friends. It doesn’t make sense to me when shows have women hating women due to jealousy or envy or whatever. I hate it even more when they’re sisters. They seldom ever do that with ML (unless it’s for the throne which I get). The storyline made sense and there was logic to the choices everyone made, even if it was on the obsessive toxic side. Adults actually acting like adults. What a concept! Anyways, this a fun show that made me laugh and cry. Highly recommend it!

It is watchable, but it could have been so much better.

I dropped this drama at episode 15 when the story took a turn for worse. The second male lead, whom I really thought was unique and different, morphed into the typical jealous second male lead. And then Tian Yao did something mind boggling that didn't make sense. Then the three of them wandered around this alternate dimension...
It took me about a month to brave the drama again, but this time I skipped some episodes, started at episode 20.
And I binged in a few days. The story got decidedly more interesting and ironically it wasn't the main couple that pulled me back but the story of the King of Qinqui and his twin brother.
Wow, the actor played both roles amazingly.
What I like about this drama is that the bad guys have good reasons to be bad. I find myself sympathetic to their grievances and hope somehow that they can getter a better life in the next life or something.
Also, there were other couples in this drama whose romance I enjoyed. Some ended well, some tragically, and I felt for them.
That said, this drama is something that make me sigh in sadness. It would be soooo good. The two lead actors while not mindblowing ly great or have awesome chemistry, were good. But they were hobbled by the subpar script.

The most fun and best xianxia of 2023!

Where to even begin. This story is set in a world where humans and spirits of all kinds coexist. There is a sort of enmity between them yet some fall in love with each other. Enter our main leads, a dragon that was betrayed by his ex and had to throw his heart scale away and our fl a Taoist, that was born with a heart disease and is alive due to that heart scale. And thus ensues the most fun adventure.

The best part of this drama is definitely the characters and the humour. Our main leads have a firy chemistry since the first time they meet. There interactions and bickering is just too fun to watch.

The fl in this drama is my favorite fl ever. She is strong and smart. Yet kind and fun. What she lacks in magic, she just uses brute force to cover. I've never once seen a fl so logical and soo relatable. She holds are grudges well and I'm so glad for it. She also pays back her favors ten fold. The most adorable, smart and downright beutiful soul fl I've ever seen.

The ml is just as adorable too. Hou Ming Hao 's acting really suprised me. He just has so much emotions. He suffers quietly. The ml probably has been through the most in this drama yet he has the purest heart of all.

The second ml Bai Xiaosheng, I won't lie I liked him better when he was a matchmaker to our couple. Later when he falls in love with the fl I kinda disliked him. But don't worry it lasts only 2-3 episodes and he is back to being the best matchmaker ever.

Then comes the supporting casts. ZhuLi and Huang Xiao Yan, these two are soo soo cute. Adorable kids fall in love and try their best to protect each other. Xiangge and Feng Qing Shou probably has the hottest setup in the story. Rival business owners who actually love each other. They have a beautiful relationship too.

My favorite parts in the drama is when all the three couples gather together, helping each other or just having fun. The friendship in this drama really makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

There are so many other couples that were tragic. The snake man and monastery's QinYu. Xi Feng and Pufang. Chen Yi and Xue Lin, Lu Musheng and Fox Princess, etc. I liked their story bits too.

I really liked the wise old men Shifu and brush Sprite as well as Yan Hui's senior Zi Chen. As for the villains they are despicable but I like how none of them are one dimensional, they all have a proper reason to be how they are.

Bonus: the songs are super nice. Also this drama has a really beautiful opening ;)

I have no problem with the Casting.. The actors and actresses did their part.. When I first watch the Episode 1 I was so hooked up and anticipated for the next Episodes.. As for the reason why the story rating is low because I find the Script or Plot Bad.. The first episodes script was good then as soon as the episodes goes on the plot became Good Script to Bad Script.. Some scripts I find it irrelevant or extras... This could've been good if Only the Scriptwriter reviews the script or study over and over again, or well, how will the viewers react.. Because a bad script would end up negative reviews for actors or actresses.. While good script will bring them to a good review.. That's all for now.. Thou some episodes are roller coaster.. Still I find more episodes interesting.. I'll keep watching it and I'm only watching this because I like Neo Hou and Riley Wang.. Plus bonus for Yang Rong, Zhai Kai Ying, Zhou Ye and the rest of the cast 😅☺️☺️
