Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vowed as children to join the Defense Force and protect Japan from towering monsters called kaijuu. Years later, Mina has risen through the ranks as a decorated officer, while Kafka—now in his thirties—has settled for a mundane job disposing of kaijuu remains. His life takes a drastic turn when he saves his idealistic young coworker, Reno Ichikawa, during a monster attack, only to be transformed into a humanoid kaijuu himself. Branded as Kaijuu No. 8 by the military, Kafka embraces his new monstrous abilities to finally fulfill his childhood promise.
