Four ordinary men from modern Japan are summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc, a land under constant threat from the destructive Waves of Catastrophe. Each hero is given a legendary weapon—sword, spear, bow, or shield—to combat this ancient menace. Naofumi Iwatani, a quiet and unassuming young man, is burdened with the shield, a weapon dismissed as weak and useless. Mocked by his fellow heroes and scorned by the kingdom, he struggles to prove his worth. His situation worsens when he is betrayed by his only ally, Princess Malty, and falsely accused of a terrible crime, leaving him isolated and despised. Consumed by bitterness but determined to survive, Naofumi resolves to grow stronger on his own. He purchases Raphtalia, a dying demi-human slave, and trains her to fight alongside him. As their bond deepens, they face the approaching Waves together, battling monsters and prejudice in equal measure.
