The story follows two sisters, He Tian Tian and He Cai Lian, beginning in a small town in the 1980s. Their mother, Wang Ru Ju, dotes on the elder daughter Tian Tian while the younger Cai Lian grows up overlooked between siblings. Shaped by different circumstances, Tian Tian becomes straightforward and strong-willed, while Cai Lian is sensitive and gifted. As the family falls into hardship and their parents’ conflicts deepen, the sisters’ relationship grows strained. Through shared struggles, they reconcile, though their paths diverge—Cai Lian ventures to the city and builds a career, while Tian Tian, limited in her hometown, later follows her.
