In 2040, South Korea abolishes the death penalty and enacts a law granting victims’ families the right to punish offenders. Choi Tae Sik, a five-term congressman who had strongly opposed both the abolition and the new law, faces tragedy when his late-born daughter is abducted and murdered. Seventeen-year-old orphan Min U Hyeok is captured as the culprit but receives only a light juvenile sentence. Persuaded by his wife—out of both repentance and political calculation—Choi adopts Min U Hyeok. Outwardly he plays the role of a father, yet inwardly he harbors an unrelenting desire to kill him. As years pass, hatred and a forced semblance of familial bond intertwine. Then, history repeats itself: Choi Tae Sik’s granddaughter is murdered in the very same way.
