In the autumn of 1963, as Japan prepared to host its first Olympic Games, the Mukaida family lived quietly in Suginami, Tokyo. Their second daughter, Mukaida Michiko, who had married and moved to Nagoya, had returned home to give birth. The eldest of the three sisters, Mukaida Kuniko, had just transitioned from a film magazine reporter to a broadcast writer. She handled several regular radio programs and led a very busy life. Their mother, the youngest sister, Mukaida Kazuko, and their father all watched over Kuniko with gentle concern. One day, Kuniko and Michiko hear from Kazuko that “Father is having an affair.” In truth, Kuniko herself also had a man she loved—Nakahara—a relationship she had kept hidden from her family. Although Nakahara was separated from his wife, he still had a family, and Kuniko held their relationship close to her heart.
