Born and raised in Shinshu, Nakayama Shinpei was captivated by the traveling band Jinta he saw as a boy and dreamed of pursuing a career in music. At the age of 18, he got the opportunity to become a student of Waseda University professor Shimamura Hogetsu and moved to Tokyo. He worked hard to study while working as a student, and three years later, he was accepted into the prestigious Tokyo Music School. Despite mounting debt, Shinpei graduated and was chosen to compose "Katyusha no Uta," a song for Hogetsu's theater company, Geijutsuza. The song, sung by leading actress Matsui Sumako, became a huge hit, along with the play, bringing comfort to his mother, Zou, who raised him alone. However, his mother suddenly fell ill.
