At the center of Irene conflict could be temptation of capture. When Irene asks "Wouldn't it be better if it were me?", she tries to take control of another person's identity. The deeper form of control, however, is directed at Ai's qualia: her unique subjective experience of being alive and experiencing the world.

By connecting to Ai's consciousness, Irene can actually experience her moments of happiness from within. But another person's subjective experience cannot truly be captured or possessed. The Other always remains, in Levinas's sense, beyond our complete understanding and control.

Irene's ethical growth comes when she finally accepts this limit. Her final line "I think it's better this way," marks the moment when respect replaces the desire for control. She gives up the temptation to capture another person's experience and accepts Ai as someone with a unique and untouchable inner world.
