Mori, who was active as a haute couture designer in Paris, became affectionately known as “Madame Butterfly” for the butterfly motif that symbolized her brand. Born in Shimane as the fourth of five siblings, she experienced the ravages of war and married at the age of 22. It was when she began learning dressmaking in order to sew clothes for her unborn son that she stepped into the world of fashion. At the age of 25, she opened a custom-made dress shop, Hiyoshiya, in Shinjuku, Tokyo. She also handled costume design for works such as Season of the Sun and An Autumn Afternoon, establishing the importance of “costume design” in the Japanese film industry. Later, during a visit to New York in the United States, Mori witnessed Japanese-made garments being treated as inferior products and resolved to convey Japan’s traditional beauty and superior craftsmanship to the world. This work portrays her little-known struggles from childhood through her expansion onto the global stage. (Source: Japanese = natalie.mu || Translation = kisskh) Edit Translation
