Yamabuki, an elementary school student, continues to write letters to his mother while pretending to be his younger brother, for the sake of a mother who cannot accept her son’s death. His mother lives in a world of imagination; his father runs off to his mistress; his grandfather speaks only of dreams in a carefree manner; his grandmother works in a job that deals with “lies”; and his older sister “hates lies and liars.” Though they live under the same roof, the family members live separate lives.
