During the Bunsei era, under Shogun Tokugawa Ienari, senior councilors Mizuno Tadaakira and Mizuno Tadakuni fiercely compete for power within the shogunate. Into Edo arrives a mysterious rōnin, Nemuri Kyoshiro, carrying the famed sword Muso Masamune. Kyoshiro is secretly ordered by Tadakuni’s close aide, Takebe Senjuro, to eliminate assassins targeting Tadakuni. He cuts them down with a single stroke, but among the slain, one assassin bears a rosary around his neck. Later, Kyoshiro sends his right-hand man, Kimpachi, to track down the assassin’s younger sister, Kayaba Shizuka. Kyoshiro returns the rosary and tells her he was the one who killed her brother. A devout Christian herself, Shizuka worries for her fellow believers and seeks help from a wealthy merchant known as Bizenya, who shelters Christians by providing a hidden chapel beneath his residence. To protect them, Bizenya dispatches skilled samurai to assassinate Kyoshiro.
