The film centers on the efforts of Wan Tong Shu and others to document the Uyghur Twelve Muqam during the 1950s and 1960s. Wan Tong Shu, who had never been exposed to Muqam before, is transferred to Xinjiang Province to take part in the urgent preservation project. At the same time, Turdi Akhun, a folk artist who has spent his entire life performing Muqam, travels north from Kashgar to Dihua (present-day Urumqi).
