After natural gas stops flowing, the once-thriving Cape Toki in southern Boshu falls into rapid decline. Hoping to revive the town, Maeda Ryuichi begins drilling for natural gas, but when the venture fails, he takes his own life. His mother, Matsu, believes he did so after being rejected by Tokita Fumiko, the woman he had hoped to marry. Meanwhile, a group of oil workers—Yononaka, Ochiruin, Gakusha, Baku-san, and Sa-san—continue working at a test drilling site while waiting for news of a newly discovered oil field. Fumiko's father, Tokinosuke, has become a bitter recluse ever since his wife eloped, making him the subject of ridicule in the town. Fumiko and her friends, Bandai Yoko and Misaki Taniko, each carry painful burdens of their own and come to believe that they are the unhappiest people alive. Bound by despair, the three even make a pact to end their lives together. Everything begins to change after Fumiko is encouraged by the five oil workers. Inspired by their friendship and unwavering passion for finding oil, she wishes for their efforts to succeed and gradually grows especially close to Yononaka.
