The First Ever Zombie Apocalypse BL Has Arrived, and It Was Worth the Wait

I have watched over 500 BLs across more than 10 years, and there has always been one genre I desperately wanted to see combined with BL: a zombie apocalypse. So when the trailer for The Last Oath randomly appeared on my Facebook, I immediately knew I had to watch it. There was absolutely no way I was missing the first ever zombie apocalypse BL.

After 20 episodes, I AM OBSESSED.

The atmosphere of The Last Oath is exactly what I want from a zombie apocalypse series. I love that abandoned feeling of a world where humanity has collapsed and nature has slowly started taking over again. Trees and greenery surround abandoned buildings, technology is almost completely absent, and the characters have to depend on basic survival skills to stay alive. The forest locations are absolutely stunning, but there is also something eerie and unsettling about how beautiful the world looks while danger could be hiding anywhere and zombies could appear at any moment.

This is exactly what I want from an apocalypse story because the characters actually have to SURVIVE. They search for canned food and supplies, use maps instead of phones, carry flashlights, live together for protection and leave their shelter to hunt for resources. They fight zombies using axes, knives, bows and arrows rather than conveniently having unlimited guns and ammunition. These little details make the world feel much more believable and immersive.

And the zombies are actually SCARY.

They are fast, aggressive and brutal. Once someone gets bitten, the infection takes over incredibly quickly, so there is constantly a sense of danger. The violence is not watered down either. We are getting blood, gore, brutal deaths and proper zombie action. That death in the opening episodes was absolutely brutal and immediately showed me that this series is not afraid to kill characters.

The story follows college student Lin Zai, who discovers that he appears to have a mysterious immunity to the infection. He becomes caught up with Special Agent A Leh, who was originally sent after him, but circumstances force them to depend on each other for survival. It is such a perfect setup for enemies to lovers because they might not completely trust each other, but in this world they NEED each other.

A Leh also had one of the coolest character introductions. He is fast, dangerous, brutal and an incredible fighter. Watching him take on zombies with his dual knives and slash his way through them was epic. He immediately has that mysterious badass energy that makes you want to know more about him.

Both Chen Liang as Lin Zai and Chen Ming Han as A Leh are absolutely gorgeous, but thankfully their chemistry is just as strong as their visuals. That scene where Lin Zai slowly cleaned the dirt and blood from A Leh's face and revealed his handsome face underneath honestly felt like love at first sight. Then Lin Zai ripping open A Leh's shirt to treat his wound gave us even more tension. Somehow, in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, we have already managed to get our first CPR kiss too. I am definitely not complaining.

Their dynamic is already one of my favourite parts of the series. One is dangerous and mysterious while the other possesses an immunity that could potentially change everything. Now they are stuck together in a world full of zombies where trusting the wrong person could get them killed. Give me enemies to lovers, forced proximity, survival and romantic tension and I am SOLD.

Most importantly, THIS IS ACTUALLY BL!

That was probably my biggest concern going into the series. I did not want to wait more than 10 years for a zombie apocalypse BL only to get another bromance disguised as one. Thankfully, we are getting genuine romantic chemistry, attraction and actual kissing scenes. The romance is clearly part of the story rather than something viewers have to imagine for themselves.

The series also has 24 episodes at around 22 to 23 minutes each, which I am really happy about. The episodes might sound short individually, but with 24 episodes, that is roughly equivalent to a standard 12 episode series with longer episodes. For me, this absolutely feels like a proper full length BL rather than a short series.

The pacing has also been excellent so far. There is barely any wasted time. Within the first two episodes we already have zombie attacks, survival, brutal deaths, action, mystery, character development and romantic tension. With four episodes releasing each week and 24 episodes in total, we actually have a proper story to look forward to.

The Last Oath brings together everything I wanted from a zombie apocalypse BL. Zombies, survival, brutal action, gorgeous leads, realistic zombie makeup, beautiful post apocalyptic scenery, enemies to lovers and actual romance all in one series. It has the danger and intensity of a proper survival story while still giving us the chemistry and BL elements we came here for. What more could I ask for?

The first 18 episodes have already delivered almost everything I wanted. The story is thrilling and intense, the production looks great, the scenery is beautiful, the action is exciting, the music works well, the leads can act and their chemistry is already there. Most importantly, the zombie scenes actually make my heart race because I care about whether these characters survive.

And can we talk about that NC scene in Episode 12? I was NOT expecting them to go that far! It was so hot, intense and passionate, and you could really feel just how much their relationship had changed. After everything they have been through together, all that built up tension and desire finally exploded, and I was completely caught off guard!
The kisses, the moans, the passion and their incredible chemistry made the whole scene feel so intense. It is honestly so hard to find a series that delivers great acting, a strong plot, amazing chemistry and unforgettable NC and intimate scenes all at the same time, but The Last Oath somehow nails every single box for me. This series really has it all!

My only very minor criticism so far is that I noticed a little CGI and what appears to be AI in a few scenes. However, these moments are very brief, blend smoothly into the story and never distracted me from the overall experience. The strong acting, intense fight scenes, exciting plot, beautiful locations and everything else the series does well easily outweigh those few seconds for me. Personally, I would much rather have a few moments of CGI or AI if it helps bring an ambitious zombie apocalypse BL like this to life than not have a series like this at all.

If the quality, pacing, action and chemistry continue at this level, I can genuinely see The Last Oath becoming one of my favourite BL series of the year.

10/10 so far.

If you love Zombie Apocalypse, BL, Action, Survival, Enemies to Lovers, Romance, Gore and Post Apocalyptic stories, this is an absolute MUST WATCH.

The Most Moving Zombie Drama — I was so Invested

Final review:

The Last Oath won me over very early, and the finale only confirmed why I had been so invested all along. The story kept surprising me, kept widening in interesting ways, and gave its characters room to make messy, frustrating, very human choices. There were absolutely moments when I wanted to shake Lin Zai and tell him to just have a conversation, but even then I understood his motivations, even when his execution was questionable. The finale gave me the emotional payoff I wanted, including a genuinely moving goodbye that had me in tears, and yes — this does have a happy ending. For a drama I almost avoided because I am not a zombie/apocalypse person, this became one of the strongest and most memorable surprises of my year.

Below are my ongoing reviews as I watched the drama while it aired.
Review after episode 17:

I never thought I’d love a zombie show!
The biggest change since Episode 14 is that the romance has gotten much messier — in a good way.

A Lie and Lin Zai are not just “together now.” Lin Zai is actively wrestling with what it means to love someone who has essentially been shaped into a human weapon, while A Lie is finally admitting how deeply attached he has become. Their relationship is still tender, but now it also hurts.

One of my favorite things is how differently A Lie behaves in public versus in private. Around everyone else, he is almost unreadable. Alone with Lin Zai, he smiles, teases, touches him constantly, and turns into a completely different person. That contrast makes the intimacy feel especially personal.

The second couple has also become much more interesting than I expected, especially with the half-zombie situation, which has raised several ethical questions and one extremely important practical one: what exactly is the safety protocol for kissing half-zombies? He Yao was awfully brave with Sheng Chang Huan. Protection is important!

The story is also widening beyond simple survival. We now have research into reversing infection, questions about immunity, secrecy, sacrifice, and people making increasingly questionable decisions because they are desperate to save someone they love.

And Episode 17 hurt. A Lie’s quiet heartbreak was brutal. The scene worked because he is usually so contained, so watching him finally say what he feels and then break down so quietly hit hard.

Review after episode 14:
I am not a zombie/apocalypse person at all, so I honestly did not expect The Last Oath to work for me this well. The first episode was the hardest because there is a fair amount of zombie action, but if you are on the fence because you are worried this is just going to be people running from zombies for 24 episodes, it absolutely is not.

The real strength of the drama is A Lie and Lin Zai. Their relationship develops through mistrust, danger, caretaking, forced proximity, attraction, and gradually deepening attachment, and the progression feels very natural. Their chemistry is excellent, but more importantly, the emotional development supports the romance. When the intimacy comes, it feels earned rather than inserted just because this is a BL.

The acting has also impressed me a lot. Both leads are very good, especially in quieter scenes where so much is communicated through body language and expression. The cast is relatively small, which keeps the drama focused, but the story has started opening up in interesting ways beyond just the two leads and the immediate zombie threat.

The production is much better than I expected too. The action is effective, the locations work well for the post-apocalyptic setting, and the drama manages to create tension without needing constant large-scale spectacle. The vocal soundtrack is especially beautiful. Several of the songs are memorable enough that I have actively wanted to find them after the episodes ended.

What I like most is that the zombies are the setting and the danger, but they are not the entire plot. The story is really about trust, survival, loyalty, attachment, betrayal, and the choices people make when the normal rules of life have disappeared.

At 14 episodes in, this has become one of the biggest surprises of my current watch list. It is engaging, emotionally satisfying, well acted, and much more layered than I expected from the premise.

If you like character-driven stories and strong chemistry but are hesitant because of the zombie element, I would still recommend giving this one a chance.

one of the best bls that i have watched

this bl is very well made imo:
1- good plot
2-no filler scenes
3- good acting and good chemistry
4- great ost
i understand the complaint about some AI use, but then i remember that this doesnt have a budget of a straight show, they have an idea and a low budget and they wanted to make it work, so i do understand that..
its a supernatural show, it involve zombies but its not scary but what could be a trigger warning is them showing blood.
i highly recommend it, this a show that id rewatch in the future, i was hooked

Definitely worth the watch!

I can understand where a lot of people are coming from with the ai aspect but there's so many bls and dramas in general where they have to use it because of the low budget. Yes, it's bad but it's not like we can fly over to Asia and stop them. I personally just skip a scene i can tell is ai. If the plot is good then it has my watch.

Besides the ai, it's honestly so good. I've easily grown attached to the 2 main leads when i was only on episode 4. The chemistry is there and the music choices (sadly just found out that most if not all songs, are ai) are perfect as well. The only downside so far would be the zombies.. as someone who loves the zombie apocalypse trope, some of these zombies are lacking hard 😭. Anyways, i hope they'll be able to end it off right without leaving open endings or rushing it because i love it.

need a season 2

Overall: kuddos to the creators for the first BL zombie series; however, I wish there had been more focus on the main pair's relationship and less on the second couple (note watch suggestions to take out the content warnings). Watch the scene after the credits in episode 24. 24 episodes about 22 minutes each. - skip episode 22
- episode 23 watch 9:45-19:30 (or to the end to get more of the story)
- episode 24 watch 20:30-end

What I Liked
- unique premise/setting
- tension
- introduced the idea of who was really the most evil, zombies or humans

Room For Improvement
- needed more focus on the main pair and less on the side couple
- some nonsense stuff like CPR restarting his heart?, entering the front yard in a brand new shirt, the front gate being unlocked, the back area is vast or unsecured???, food in the open that had been lying around for months, flawless hair and clothing in that situation, etc.
- ai generated music (I understand the apocolypse stuff as ai but they did not need to use any ai generated music)

We should never ever normalize the use of AI where it does not make sense!

This is another CBL which makes use of lot's of AI - meaning, it takes jobs away from humans. It's not that humans are necessarily more expensive than AI. In conventional datacenters it consumes astronomical amounts of energy and water (and we have enough droughts as it is). The whole soundtrack except the title-track is made by AI. Why? It's not that a whole orchestra can't be created by software anyways. Of course they used AI also for arial shots and you can see it.

The story has some massive problems: We have the killer and the naive young man, nothing new in the world of BL. But when they finally got together Lin Zai brakes up because he is an coward. He used a lot of hurtful words to A Leh and when he is saved A Leh says "Baby, I'm here for you"... WTF? Where is the argument? That makes no sense at all.

The second problem is the predictablitiy of the story. It begins with the cannibals. We all know at first glance that family is not a friendly one. And this continues. They use stereotypical cliché characters and the story evolves in stereotypical patterns. Of course nobody would trust that crooked doctor when he did turn on the first time.

And then we have the Zombies... In literature, movies, video games, they are slow as hell, but not here. In movies, video games there are some special types like the runners - who are fast, but here all Zombies are fast which is not what I would expect and which I felt silly.

I can't fault the acting or the chemisty, but I lost interest in the series quite soon, because when you know what will happen next, it's not interesting anymore. They could have left out the cannibal family and could have just made it a fight against the evil corporation, but maybe that would have been too close to Resident Evil. So from me it's a big "no no" for such a series.

not aleh being faster than bullets.

like most chinese BL, this was a miss for me and i will obviously explain why. after i got through the cringe of the first episode, i realized this was going to be a work of just anticipating the lead's romance, for my watch experience. this show had the most production errors i have seen in any BL so far. the thing with apocalyptic shows is that the budget has to be reflective of the scope that becomes showcasing a zombie world. i am a bit confused on what the budget was because despite the AI usage, there was clearly enough budget to hire stuntmen unless they are also grossly underpaid in china as well?

so china and other asian countries have seemingly fully embraced generative AI and enough to use it to completely supplement creativity. unlike in nour [a thai BL], this one uses AI that is disturbingly obvious and disrupting. the opening theme visually and musically is generated. almost the entire soundtrack is generated. random overview scenes were generated. i came into watching this knowing that the soundtrack had AI music but i had no idea nearly every song is not human made. i also had no idea that there was AI usage tracked all throughout either. it is uber unfortunate because this show had the best placed and produced OST i have heard, at this point in time. these songs could have simply been recording by the leads or any other professionals. it eats at me to know that i thoroughly enjoyed the songs "made" for this show and i am not able to listen to any of them due to my ethics.

to be honest, i was generous with my rating. the suggested rating given to me is less than a five. that, however, it feels wrong. i can tell there was intention in making this but the execution was less than mediocre. i am not compelled to believe the first zombie BL was real, unfortunately. i continued with consuming this entirely for linzai + aleh & aleh's display of anti-personnel tactics - that is it. the reasons i have for considering this to be less than mediocre are long and include: the obvious low budget, the fraudulent rendering of first aid, unrealistic zombie bites, linzai "changing a lightbulb" with a flathead screwdriver in hand by holding a lid, camera shakes, fake kissing sounds, slow and convenient zombies, a mattress landing pad forgotten in final production, obvious fake edits and green screens, AI scenes, the zombies being oddly sapient, inconsistent microphone qualities, a fiasco of a blip with aleh pulling out the transfusion feed + a bandage to appear, disappear, and then reappear again. this is not even all of the observations i noted. clearly, it is an industry standard not to care about the intricacies of filming.

to backtrack to the music, the relationship break invoked the most emotion and feeling in me because of the soundtrack used. it was perfectly timed and played in symmetry with the dialogue. i rewinded this part about six times. i think this scene is the best in the entire body of work, so much that i will seek it out externally. the song used is apparently the lead's theme song and i have found it but the apprehension is strong to even listen to a source that will not support its creation; that is how good this song is.

to mention another aspect of the breakup, linzai absolutely pissed me off. his reasoning for being cruel to aleh was completely illogical. linzai was meaner to aleh then compared to after his kidnapping which is ? his apology to aleh was less than adequate which broke immersion, for me. then, he physically harmed aleh after what happened to his brother which was a choice; maybe understandable to some but questionable to me. linzai pushing aleh away in the way he did seemed like bad writing.

the acting on chen minghao's and lu lu's part really sold me. i think they both were the breakouts in this. everyone else was fine or corny but worked out given the budget. the intimacy between linzai and aleh could have been better but it was good. their feelings for the other were not exactly believable though. even though i could not stand he yao's relationship with changhuan, they had the better intimacy as their kissing was more believable and slower paced. speaking of he yao, the way his end came to be was undeserved. he deserved fields worse and to reap the consequences of his manipulation. chen minghao's action scenes really kept me engaged and i wanted to see more of his swift, cold, and calculated movements. he did quite well, if most was him and not doubles. as my title says though, he is faster than bullets and that is utter nonsense. who were they trying to sell that foolery?

in all, be it the vow or the last oath, i do not believe the story told. there was no oath unless it was that aleh's promise to protect linzai. obligatory, fck AI, fck AI usage, fck its creators, and fck its enablers especially. the ending was a welcomed surprise, though.

Fuck AI, Poorly Written Story, Fire Chemistry.

Not gonna get into much detail. This reviews title actually sums up everything I think about this series.

I've always been against using generative AI in media. And this show proves how AI can destroy your enjoyment from a piece of media. The music is in this show completely composed with AI. I literally wanted to cut off my ears whenever I heard those cringe ass English vocals with human imitated voices. Thank god they didn't persist using those pieces on the last 1/3rd of the show. Using budget shortages as an excuse to use generative AI is simply not acceptible in my book. It's horrible and it is harmful to people's works, us humans and generally all humanity. (Using AI in a story that advices their audiences to live on even when you encounter difficulties in life is ironic right ?) Other than music it was obvious that they used AI altered videos in wide shots too. Which looks horrible and immediately distracts you from what you were watching.

Story-wise, there is not much to tell. They apparently gathered a bunch of zombie-apocalyptic stories together and stole some ideas and applied some cliches here and there and voila! this script came forth. (I especially got very shocked when I saw they applied some themes from RE9 this quickly into this series lmao). However, no matter how bad the story sounds, I can't deny that it wasn't fun to watch. It was just a brain-dead story with much cliches but weirdly with a captivating allure. Some ideas looked promising, especially on the first half of the show, but then it fell short very quickly. It could not keep up with itself and instead relied on cliche themes. And along the way, there were too many nonrealistic things were happening while the story continued. Like how some places like airports or even cities has electricity or how our Lead Boy Lin Zai never runs out of arrows or how they keep finding a bunch of medicine every time they need it or how the evil doctor He Yao kept talking in medical lingo but ended up just needing more blood as a result or how his short-wave radio could transmit over a hundred kilometers distance. I could go on an on but I think you'll get what kinda things im talking about. Maybe they explained some of them in the beginning of every episode with those newspaper looking pages but idk they were all in Chinese and I was too lazy to open up and translate. If y'all want a show where you can turn off your brain and just enjoy a love story in an apocalypse, you will enjoy this show, like me (damn I am ashamed to saying this but im sorry I enjoyed it too).

The actors were everything. From our leads to guest actor grandma's, they were all great. The relationship between our leads was very captivating. They literally carried the whole show. literally. If it wasn't for their chemistry, maybe I wouldn't be able to enjoy this series at all. One weird thing is that instead of attuning the colouring of some scenes, they decided to paint the leads face with white paint which looked a bit off and lifeless. It was a very easy fix but im surprised they wanted to do it this way.

The sets were also great too when they did not use AI. the house in the beginning, some parts of the cities that we could see, the airport, the amazing theater scene, some parts and houses of the camp etc. were appropriately decorated. Of course, it looks bullshit when in the beginning they explain the apocalypse started 22 days ago but nature almost completely took over everything. but other than that, the sets looked great and appropriate.

That's all I'm gonna say I guess. Fuck AI,Fuck Generative AI, always raise your voice whenever they try to normalize the use of Generative AI and oppose it.

Zombies and gays were enough for me.

It promised a lot, but the last third is an annoying mess. It was not as rewarding as I expected to be. There seems to be a problem with chinese BLs in general, it builds up super engrossing until it gets all unserious. The chemestry is solid, the leads are charming , but the conflict in the third act is pure ragebait. The AI works sometimes and put you off in others.
I liked tho, but the jorney is way better than the destination.

Hooked

This series is absolutely amazing so far, always moving forward (although should be called carry each other through the apocalypse :D) The story has me hooked, the chemistry is amazing, and the music is beautiful.

A few continuity issue, ie man in glasses that i swear changed and also had no lenses in one scene, and the zombies aren't really scary. There are a few plot twists i am seeing coming, but even if they do happen, i'm fine with that as i've enjoyed the journey.

Would recommend even for non-zombie fans as the story is the focus.

Didn’t expect much but was hooked on pretty quickly

A zombie apocalypse? Not really my thing. But when it was combined with bl then it become a must watch because when would we ever get something like this again? Frankly talking, despite the high rating, I was still skeptical about it but I thought I should give it a chance. And what can I say after binge it, it was worth the time I used for it!

The story, it wasn’t really anything different from how a zombie themed series/movies are, a breakout, pharmaceutical companies fighting to come up with a preventative meds, search after a possible immune host. But although it was how it started, the drama was built around the relationship of the characters, be it lovers or family ties. Loved the leads characters, they have this dynamic like Gu Hai and Bai Lou Yin. Though in times, I found Lin Zai irritating, it wasn’t hard to understand his choices either so I was fine with how he was somehow. And A-lie, this man was an a$$ but changed around Lin Zai like another person after you know… but he already have a soft spot for Lin Zai even before that and that make their relationship seems natural, not forced or out of the blue kind of development. It was wholesome. He is whipped for Lin Zai and I love it although in times I wanted him to leave Lin Zai behind.

And the ost, Indigo Room by Honary was chef kiss. I could use it as a lullaby. That voice, the wavy and calm tone, it was so addicting that I did not skip the opening intro in any episode.

Lastly, I am not a seeker for nc scenes, give me kisses and I will be happy (even this is not a must have either). I don’t comment about nc scenes either but my my, the nc scenes between the leads here are so HOT. 🥵

I am sure I will be rewatching this soon enough.

Something I never knew I needed!

this is SO peak and genuinely such a good drama even without the BL aspect. the acting is so good!

the ONLY reason why I gave it 9.5 is due to the AI… But tbh the rest of the aspects saved it!

I’m only 12 episodes in but I’m so hooked, I also love how they’re so short and snappy. sometimes other series (Thai Bls) can drag due to their duration time but the fact that they’re 15-30 min eps is so refreshing cuz I can just watch an ep and go back to doing what I was doing without it feeling like I spent to much time on a series.

also 2 Eps every week!! we’re being spoiled!!

this whole drama is amazing and I’m definitely going to rewatch this once its complete! 👀
