The year 1927 marked a major turning point in the course of China's Great Revolution. While the revolution and military campaigns under the cooperation between the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) were continuing to develop, the right wing of the Kuomintang, represented by Chiang Kai-shek, and the Wuhan Kuomintang authorities, led by Wang Jing Wei, successively launched the April 12 and July 15 counterrevolutionary coups. They openly betrayed the policy of cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, as well as the anti-imperialist and anti-feudal program established by Sun Yat Sen, and carried out large-scale massacres of Communists and revolutionary masses. To save the revolution from this crisis, the Communist Party of China solemnly assumed the historic mission of continuing the struggle against imperialism and feudalism.
