The film centers on four Japanese high school girls involved in enjo kosai, or compensated dating, where older businessmen pay teenage girls for their time or, in rare cases, prostitution. The main character, Hiromi, struggles with finding direction in life compared to her friends. When they plan to buy her a ring, Hiromi refuses to accept all the money and instead dates alone to raise the funds. As she gets deeper into the world of enjo kosai, Hiromi becomes trapped in her desire to preserve her "friends-forever" ideal. (Source: kisskh) Edit Translation

An Intemporal Take on Compensated Dating

Love & Pop is a shocking and brutal watch, tackling a taboo subject with an approach that is both deeply engaging and deliberately unsettling. At times, it can feel visually and narratively disorienting.

What the film exposes was already present in the 1990s, yet it has only intensified over time, especially with teenagers gaining easier access to the internet. It sheds light on a reality that feels uncomfortably modern, one that many prefer to ignore or simply avoid confronting.

More importantly, this isn’t just a localized issue tied to one country or culture. The film points to something far more universal ~ a societal problem that transcends borders, making its message as relevant today as it was when it first emerged.

I love Anno's directing here every shot is either beautiful, creative, unique, or all three at the same time. Constant interesting angles helps the film never get dull. Some very uncomfortable and disturbing scenes were amplified by Anno doing a POV shot of literally everything. Combined with the great soundtrack there are some really cool scenes.

Interesting commentary on perversion and sexualisation in Japan from some girls chasing material but empty desires, and some men who are pathetic and lonely and others who are screwed in the head.
