The only way I can even begin to describe this drama is as a 'wasted opportunity.' Now, it wasn't 'bad' by any means, but that also doesn't mean that it was the greatest.
Doctor Stranger had a very intriguing beginning that captured the viewers attention just by the mere mention of North Korea. With such a strong beginning it is almost impossible to think that this drama could even go downhill; however, this a completely wrong assumption to make. At the start, the focus on Park Hoon and the moral dilemma of being a doctor made for a completely emotional story line. Unfortunately, the show was not able to keep up this interest as it feel into a decline. The romance was dragged out between the main character and his love interest with too much push and pull that made it quite difficult to end up rooting for them (especially since their romance as childhood sweethearts was too adorable to handle). If you are looking for the romantic doctor content, then you most likely won't find it here. The biggest issue with the story line is that it just wasn't planned out as well as it could have been.

Acting wise? Not many complaints. Lee Jong Suk provides amazing depth to the lead character and acts with the same charm that we all know and love. Park Hae Jin's double sided character is portrayed as well as it can be within this drama, no complaints. As for the two female leads, it is hard to say whether they were good as their characters were just terribly written. Many scenes with the female actresses were just missing the character development that they both deserved which in turn just made them bland and uninteresting to watch. I think it is safe to say that Yoon Bora's Chang Yi saved the day in terms of female characters with her lovable and charming personality.

Can't say much about the music as it did not seem to have as much of an impact as it should have.

Would I rewatch it? Probably not. Would I recommend it to someone? Possibly yes, depending on if they are a fan of any of the actors/actresses.

Overall opinion: I am not going to say that it is the worst (even if it was, I can't leave a drama unfinished). But there are definitely places for improvement, which is disappointing because the show had so much potential if it had been executed properly. My positive opinions about the show come from a bit of a biased opinion based on the pure fact that I am a fan of Lee Jong Suk and Park Hae Jin. If you want a romantic drama, this isn't the one to look for. If you want a medical drama, there are a few better ones out there. If you want good looking male leads who provide depth to a character, then knock yourself out with this.

Dramatic with Dark Comedy undertones

Review Date 6/8/2026

I truly enjoyed watching Doctor Stranger. 8/10

While the story felt heavy at times, a number of scenes and plot twists were so over-the-top that, viewed as a whole, they gave the drama unexpected and enjoyable dark-comedy undertones. For example:
1. Wait… what? She’s alive after being shot, dangling from a ledge for what feels like forever, somehow managing to pry which should by now be Park Hun’s slippery hand off hers so she can fall to her death, right? into the river below? never mind the bridge’s side wall was too high to begin with.
2. This is Episode 14+…, is she or isn’t she Song Jae Hee?
3. How does Song Jae Hee end up with no gunshot scar on her right shoulder, and why does she suddenly have two kidneys when she’s supposed to have only one?
4. The Prime Minister’s (comedic style) expressions of disgust at being “Number Two.” Every time he had to bow, show respect, or answer to the President, his facial expressions were priceless, or how he laughed or snickered at his stupidity.
5. The scene where the Prime Minister convinces himself the President is in a coma, confidently unleashes his pent-up resentment, and then watches in horror as the President’s eyes suddenly open.
6. Cha Jin Soo somehow manages to spy on PH and SJH everywhere. He’s disguised as a hospital employee, part of the Prime Minister’s security detail, or lurking nearby—and no one ever notices him.
7. Cha Jin Soo’s resurrection from the dead in Episode 18, and shoots PH and the both fall of over the edge into, wait for it, the river - and a year later there were still no bodies.
8. The endless back-and-forth from different angles over who would operate on the Prime Minister - who wasn’t even sick.
9. Dr. Oh (“Quack”) and Han Seung Hee lovingly debating which woman Park Hun should end up with.

There were more moments like these that cracked me up, but I’ll stop there.

Park Hun’s emotional scene describing what he was forced to do as a doctor in NK was gripping. I could feel his absolute feelings of shame, anger, and horror at what he did, mixed with inescapable grief. The story shows us how much he valued life at any cost he could give.

The story’s crazy momentum kept me fully engaged, and I found myself rooting for Park Hun to reunite with his first love. Dr. Han Jae Joon wasn’t truly evil, and one of the drama’s strongest moments was when he realized that revenge did not bring the satisfaction or closure he had expected.

There was no look-alike after all—it was Song Jae Hee the entire time. While the mystery surrounding her identity created effective suspense early on, I think the drama would have benefited from revealing sooner that Han Seung Hee was, in fact, Song Jae Hee. Some of the many flashback scenes could have been used to tell her story: what happened after she was taken away, how she became a North Korean operative, and how she convinced North Korea that she was not Song Jae Hee. That would have added much-needed depth to her character. As presented, it was often difficult to understand her true agenda and motivations. As it was it was difficult trusting her; whoever she was, was she there as a spy to destroy Park Hun or was she his true love whom she came to protect?

I liked Cha Jin Soo as Jae Hee’s North Korean partner. he just had the look of a comedic villain. However, as mentioned earlier, bringing him back during the final episodes stretched credibility too far for me. For a true drama, I think it would have been more convincing to introduce a new North Korean operative to take his place. The Prime Minister’s “lollipop” bodyguard certainly should have known better than to leave a body unrecovered after shooting someone and dumping them into a river. But then again, it’s a K-drama.

I liked the bodyguard.

I didn’t mind the various political and personal agendas surrounding whether Park Hun or Han Jae Joon should operate on the Prime Minister, but the decision changed so many times that it became exhausting (a dark comedy effect).

I also liked Dr. Oh. She was a sensitive soul and quite sweet. Park Hun sent her so many mixed signals that it was no surprise she began developing feelings for him. Han Jae Joon, on the other hand, provided mature stability, who was honest with her about himself and his mistakes with her. He knew her, and could see what was happening with PH. Although he didn’t like their banter, (and it was refreshing to see this) he gave her space to sort out her feelings without pressuring or dismissing her. He genuinely loved her. As she finally realized, he was a better match for her than Park Hun.

As for her father and brother, they deserved a good Korean slap several times throughout the series.

At times, it felt as though the writers threw absolutely everything at Park Hun except the kitchen sink—another source of the drama’s accidental dark-comedy vibe.

Park Hun endured an extraordinary amount of trauma throughout his life, yet he remained fundamentally optimistic. That resilience was essential to his survival. His father was a remarkable man who taught him how to live despite his circumstances rather than be defined by them.

I feel most everyone did a great job in this drama. The three standout performances for me were from Lee Jong-suk (Park Hun), Cheon Ho-jin (Prime Minister - dark comedy villain), and Kim Sang-joong (Park Cheol).

The soundtrack was good, though not great. At times the music was mixed so loudly that it became distracting during emotional scenes.

Overall, Doctor Stranger was an entertaining watch. if I hadn’t pick up the dark comedy vibe from the occasional descents into outright absurdity, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it so much. It truly kept me invested from beginning to end. I can see myself revisiting some episodes in the future.

8/10

Medical thriller with a historical political twist

A cautionary moral tale, about ethics, politics, promises, and duty of care. Surprisingly deep despite the sometimes shallow characters (like the playboy resident), this heart-pumping, oft gory drama about one of the top cardiology departments in Korea shows how far politicians, soldiers and doctors and prepared to go in order to ensure they reach the very top and remain there as long as they can. Pretty solid acting by all, especially northern side and the seemingly cold dad. A surprise sleeper hit which kept our pulses raised till the very end.

Forever My Doctor Stranger: A Love That Beats As One

I rewatched Doctor Stranger again after such a long time.
Let me first talk about the positive side of this drama. I can honestly say I still have not moved on from it. This is my Shayla, my romance empire.

The first two episodes are truly LEGENDARY.
When I was a child, I watched this drama without thinking too much and just felt deeply hooked by Jaehee and Hoon’s love story from the very start. Only after rewatching it now did I realize that their love actually teaches us what true love really means.

From beginning to end, Hoon only loves Jaehee.
Jaehee is his love, his soulmate, his family, his life force, his compass, and his home. That is why the time he spends without her, he feels like a stranger. And it is the same for Jaehee. To her, Hoon is her love, her soulmate, her beautiful dream, her life force, and her home.
Since the moment they realized their hearts beat in the same rhythm, they knew they were each other’s destination. That is why they would do anything and sacrifice so much for one another.

I am glad that in the end, after all the endless challenges and hardships, they finally find their way back home to each other.
Lee Jong Suk and Jin Se Yeon’s chemistry and acting are what made me hold on until the end. I still melt for all their happy moments 😭❤️.
Special mention to Lee Jong Suk’s brilliant portrayal of Hoon. I can say for sure that his Hoon is the most handsome, attractive, and charismatic version of him ever. I love the friendly haha-hihi Hoon who looks super cool during surgery chef’s kiss.

Many criticize Jin Se Yeon’s acting here, but to me, her acting is okay though. Not the best, but definitely not something that disturbed my experience watching the drama. She really suits the first-love vibe with her long hair actually. A white moonlight that a man can’t forget. Especially the scene where she got shot and fell from the bridge *that’s chef’s kiss*.

Also, the best part is the OST. Honestly, K-dramas these days still can’t compete with old K-drama OSTs. This drama is one of them. It’s truly legendary. I can listen to the OST 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, without ever feeling bored. Every time I hear the song, especially “Stranger” by Bobby Kim, I feel like I want to cry my lungs out😭💔. It’s just so sad for no reason. It’s such a magical song for me.

Now let’s talk about the bad side.
Yes, the best part is definitely only the first two episodes. The drama had such huge potential. I can see that both the writer and the director had a lot of ideas and wanted to make it big, but they ended up just messing around and achieving nothing 😔.
They tried to combine action, medical, politics, revenge, melodrama, and romantic comedy all in one story. It was ambitious, but they failed big time. None of those genres were executed perfectly.

I also really hated how they turned the romance into a love triangle. It was unnecessary.
They turned it into a couple war between two ships just for popularity, because at that time “husband-hunting” and “endgame-couple guessing” were trendy. But that choice ruined the emotional focus of the story.

No matter what people said, I have always been on Team Jaehee and Hoon.
There is no point in making such a long and painful love story just for Hoon to suddenly move on and fall for a so-called new and better girlfriend. If they wanted that, they should have just killed Jaehee from the beginning and let Hoon move on early.

Hoon had no motivation to join Myungwoo Hospital or move the story forward if not for Jaehee. If he had known she was dead from the start, he probably would have died too. After losing his father and Jaehee, he had no reason, no motivation, and no life force left to live. The only reason he worked so hard every day was because he believed Jaehee was still alive in North Korea.

So imagine making such a loyal man who sacrificed everything for his love suddenly betray her and move on to another girl when his original girlfriend comes back. What a joke.
That is why I can never empathize with people who shipped the Quack couple. To me, that ship was like cheering for betrayal. They supported a man abandoning his true love just to chase something new and better. But true love is never about finding the best one. It is about finding someone who makes you feel perfectly at home.

And that is exactly what Jaehee is to Hoon, and Hoon to Jaehee.
They are both strangers in a foreign land who found home in each other. No one understands Hoon better than Jaehee, and vice versa. It is just sad that the drama did not explore their backstory deeper. Because of that, many viewers could not fully understand how deep their bond truly was.

I also feel really sad about how poorly the drama treated Jaehee’s character.
She had so much potential. A North Korean and Japanese spy and doctor could have had such a rich, layered story. But we barely knew anything about her.

Why did she want to become a doctor?
Why was her family arrested?
Why was her Japanese family stuck in North Korea?
How did she even survive after drowning in the Budapest river?

The drama did not show her emotional journey, her struggles, or her point of view. Instead, they gave way too much focus to the Quack character, who was supposed to be a contrast to Hoon’s love for Jaehee and just the hospital director’s daughter. Yet we got all her family drama, her struggles as a doctor, how she fell for Hoon, how she tried to move on from him, and more, which did not even help the main story.

They showed her crying again and again, which honestly got annoying, but it worked to make viewers sympathize with her. In reality, she was a wishy-washy character who jumped between Jaejoon and Hoon and then went back to Jaejoon after Hoon rejected her. It was so unfair to Jaehee, the most incomplete and poorly written character among the four leads.

I also hated how the writing made Hoon and Jaehee’s reunion moments so confusing.
When Hoon hugged Jaehee, it should have been a fluttering, emotional moment just for them. But they ruined it by adding a parallel scene with Quack hugging Hoon too, as if to start a new love line. It ruined the emotion and made people misinterpret Hoon’s feelings.

When Hoon drunkenly said he wished Quack was Jaehee, viewers also misunderstood that scene. What he meant was not that he wished Quack as a person was Jaehee. He meant he wished Jaehee as a doctor could be like Quack, passionate, focused, and living as a doctor again.

It ties perfectly with the drama’s poster. Jaehee was the only one not wearing a doctor’s gown. It symbolized that she never truly lived as a doctor throughout the story. From beginning to end, she was a woman who loved her man so deeply that she was ready to sacrifice everything for him. Her only motivation to live was Hoon.

That is why Hoon hoped she could also live for herself, to have a purpose as a doctor, not just as his lover.

As for Jaehee’s personality change after reuniting in South Korea, I think it is the writer and director’s fault for not showing enough of her emotional struggles. From her point of view, she was constantly juggling everything, finishing her mission, hiding her identity, protecting Hoon, competing with Quack, handling patients, and getting involved in political conspiracies, all while being emotionally torn apart.

She understood Hoon more than anyone.
She knew many of her choices were not what he wanted, but she had no other choice. Behind the scenes, she was always fighting for him and trying to give him better options while keeping him safe. Poor Jaehee had to bear everything alone.

After their reunion, some viewers said Jaehee changed and never smiled as sincerely as she did back in North Korea. But at the very end, when everything was finally settled, her genuine smile returned.
Ironically, Hoon once said he fell in love with her because of her smile. “She is good at smiling, good at smiling, good at smiling.”

Even though she stopped smiling, even though her personality changed, Hoon still loved her because she is Jaehee.
No hairstyle, no personality shift, no misunderstanding could change that.

From start to finish, there was never any room for Quack.
Even when Jaehee did things Hoon did not like, hid things from him, or made choices that caused him pain, nothing ever changed his love for her.
She is the only one who could truly make him happy, the only one who could make his playful personality turn serious.

Only after Jaehee returned did Hoon start dreaming again, to become a doctor, to find his mother, to think about the future.

And no love is greater than Jaehee’s love for Hoon.
She still loved him and wanted to see him even after knowing he killed her father to save her life. In reality, no one could do that.

Jaehee’s love is defined by faith. She always believed in Hoon.
No matter how many times he disappointed her, failed his plans, chose patients over her, or was misunderstood by others, she always believed in him. She was his true support system.

Remember when everyone got angry at Hoon for using the Saver procedure? Quack impatiently woke the patient up and caused more trouble, but Jaehee calmly monitored the patient, analyzed the condition, and only asked Hoon to act when it was safe. She always believed in his skills and used her mind to help him. That is real support.

Another thing I hate is how the story trapped itself in its own setup.
Because Hoon had to act neutral toward Seunghee in front of others, they never looked close. But why could they not at least live in the same house?
Why did they make Jaehee live with Quack instead?
Because of this, we got robbed many of potential Hoon-Jaehee relationship development scenes 😭💔.

They were already engaged. Hoon even gave Jaehee a proposal ring, and the drama completely forgot about it. It should have ended with Hoon and Jaehee getting married 😭💔.

But at the end of the day, I still truly love this drama because of Hoon and Jaehee.
All the struggles and conflicts they went through only made their love grow stronger. Through hardship, they learned how to protect, fight, guide, defend, compromise, and even let go for love.
They learned what true love really is ❤️.

I like to think that after all these years, eleven years later, Hoon and Jaehee are already married, living happily with their children in a small village, loving each other and living their best life every single day.

I will start missing them again soon, and when I do, I will rewatch this beautiful story all over again 🥺♥️.

Schade.

Lee Jong Suk and Kang So Ra!

Doctor Stranger had so much potential, but it felt like the writers couldn’t tighten the story up in a way that fully delivered on its premise. The setup is strong and the medical thriller angle with North Korea had a lot of room to be gripping, but the execution often felt uneven and scattered, which made it hard to stay fully invested throughout.

Lee Jong Suk as Park Hun was one of the highlights of the drama. He did a great job and his delivery as a doctor felt convincing and natural, especially in high pressure surgical scenes. One of my favorite moments was when he was saving a baby, it really showed his intensity and skill as a dctor and stood out as one of the most emotional and engaging parts of the drama.

The chemistry between Lee Jong Suk and Jin Se Yeon was completely lacking. I couldn’t even root for them as a couple, and their scenes together felt flat and forced.

Lee Jong Suk and Kang So Ra had great chemistry and their dynamic felt more natural and believable on screen. You can see the admiration she has for him as a doctor which I felt turned into a crush, but I liked the way it was played out.

Jin Se Yeon’s portrayal of a North Korean spy didn’t work for me either. I couldn’t take her seriously in the role, especially in scenes where she was supposed to appear threatening, tough, or mysterious. It just didn’t land emotionally or convincingly, which made her storyline less engaging.

Overall, the drama had a strong concept and a solid cast, but the writing and character chemistry issues kept it from reaching its full potential.

Rating Justification:
Story: 9/10 - I really enjoyed this drama's story. I must admit that I did prefer the first half of the story and I do think the concept of Jong Suk and Se Yeon did tire me towards the end. The North Korea element really boosted the story for me and definitely kept me up at night! I am sure I will never forget the first 4 episodes of this drama. They have sticked with me until now, and I think it drove this story to the 9 it is now.
Acting: 9.5/10 - I LOVED this cast. When I say the cast, I am being a little biased considering 2 of my favourite actors are the main characters of this drama (Lee Jong Suk and Park Hae Jin). However Kang So Ra was also a great protagonist, and our dear Chun Ho Jin was ever the great villain!
Music: 8.5/10 - Okay, this soundtrack was indeed great and I remember actively singing along with it while I watched this drama, but the sole reason for this 8.5 is the fact that for the life of me I could not remember any of the songs as I started writing this review. After a quick look at my k-drama soundtracks playlist I indeed found some of the songs among my favourites.
Rewatch Value: 8/10 - This criteria is a bit hard to judge for me, seeing as I am a person that doesn't enjoy rewatching things that much, so I have decided to judge this based on how much I predict I would enjoy it in case I did rewatch this drama. I have based this 8 on the sole reason that I think if I had to watch Se Yeon's character for 20 more hours I might get slightly put off this drama for real.
Overall: 9/10 - I think this drama is another Korean Drama classic. Besides the action packed story and great actors, it explores much more than the mere relationships between doctors or patients. It pushes the boundaries of what we think medicine is and makes us question corruption inside the government. It will forever be a drama that I remember dearly, even if some aspects of it lacked a little (Lee Jong Suk and Jin Se Yeon's relationship). I do apologise for the excessive talk on the Jin Se Yeon character, but it is honestly the only flaw I can point out in this drama.

The beginning is one of the best!!!

I rewatch it a month ago...
I enjoyed it more because i knew what was coming.
The story is interesting, the separated lovers and the endlessly effort to reunite. I didn't like the plolitics, wish it has more "hospital" time, more interesting ways of showing the awesome skills of Park Hoon.

A little long to me, could be cut to 10 or 12 episodes.

I think the end is ok, a little rushed for me.
I don't understand Park Hoon decision of living in a remote place and a remote hospital Is he going to waste his ans Hang Seung Hee skills?

I was completely addicted in the first 8 to 10 episodes! But after that, they did dragged a little: don't understand the 16 episodes formula. Few dramas deserve so many episodes and most of them tend to drag the story.

Overall, this could be a master piece but it fail to deliver...

But, if you like beautiful and true love, a plot with lots of twists and mistery, great moments of suspense, excitement, specially in the O.R., them please watch it!

---

I generally skip this but i couldn't help myself from writing a review after reading the comment section. I know this review is quite late so better late than never.

I would love to RECOMMEND this show.

The drama beautifully blends high-stakes medical cases with intense political conspiracies, keeping viewers on the edge of their seat.
My favourite characters are Park hoon, Jae hee and Han jae joon. I really enjoyed their respective characters journey. Jae hee and Jae joon being the most complex characters. I also liked park hoon and jae hee didn't loose their spark even after going through so much. I did wish Park hoon and Han jae joon could have taken their revenge together.

And surprisingly i disliked oh soo hyun. I actually thought i would love her like so many did but she was a sore thumb in all the 4 main characters. Yes she had good chemistry with LJS and a good actor indeed but her character was a mess. Writers should have refrain from a love triangle to begin with, this was absolutely unnecessary. Which actually made me dislike Dr. oh's character coz she emotionally cheated on Han jae joon. She fell in love with Park hoon while she was still dating han jae and also avoided breaking up with him. She came across as a confused and a coward character. She had such a great potential with han jae. Han jae deserved better than her.

But all in all it was a great drama.
