Near Shanghai, the Pang family resides in a grand estate. Old Master Pang, an opium addict, raises his daughter Ruyi in smoke-filled luxury, while her brother Zheng Da is similarly addicted and left brain-dead. Their brother-in-law, Zhong Liang, is a Shanghai gigolo who seduces and blackmails wealthy married women. When Old Master Pang dies, Ruyi is forced to lead the household.
