The production company of the upcoming medical drama Doctor on the Edge, starring Lee Jae Wook and Shin Ye Eun, has released an official statement commenting on the allegations that staff members of the drama have been subjected to excessively long working hours of up to 65 hours per week.
According to the Hanbit Center, Doctor on the Edge, which began filming in September last year, carried out filming for 63 hours per week for three consecutive weeks in December alone.
Earlier, the Hanbit Media Labor Rights Center (hereinafter referred to as the Hanbit Center) stated on January 8, "We have confirmed that extremely long working hours in violation of the 52-hour workweek limit are taking place on the set of Genie TV original drama Doctor on the Edge (working title), which is scheduled to air on ENA."
Studio M, the production company behind Genie TV's original drama Doctor on the Edge, apologized, stating, "We sincerely apologize for having caused concern due to issues that arose on the drama production set, and more importantly, we sincerely apologize to the staff members who did their best on site."
"Studio M is taking the issues raised regarding filming hours very seriously, and as the production company [in charge], we intend to resolve them responsibly."
They continued, "In an effort to create a more efficient production environment, the production team has been adjusting the filming schedule and reviewing its operational methods," adding, "In these circumstances, we explained the situation to the staff and gathered their opinions in consideration of the tight conditions on set. However, as a result, we feel a heavy sense of responsibility as the production company for failing to sufficiently and carefully take into account the staff's actual filming workload and accumulated fatigue."
The production company also promised, "Going forward, we will faithfully comply with the 52-hour workweek limit for all filming schedules," and added, "With regard to any filming periods that have already exceeded the 52-hour limit, we will actively consult with the staff and make efforts to reach an amicable resolution."
Doctor on the Edge is a medical drama that depicts the story of doctor Do Ji Ui (Lee Jae Wook), who arrives on Pyeondongdo, an island no one wants to go to, and the secretive nurse Yook Ha Ri (Shin Ye Eun).
