I made two parts in one article. Part 1: My theory of the ending. Part 2: brief explanation on why China doesn't make true time travel C-dramas. The second part has no spoilers, can be safely shared (use Table of Contents)

Hmm... that was odd. It was the same link. I deleted and pasted again from my website. The link above should now work, or you can use the link below. I already tested both.

When Destiny Brings the Demon: The Ending and About Time-Travel Chinese Dramas

Thank you for sharing! It makes sense, and you caught lots of things I missed in ep 1 that would suggest Zou Yan is in fact Liao Tingyan's (frost fish) reincarnation, and that Sima Jiao guided her to relive their past. My only nitpick is that Liao Tingyan was NOT reincarnated as Shi Yan, but had the soul cleanse and lost her memories as Liao Tingyan, no? A small detail that doesn't take away from your theory at all.

Even when Tingyan finally died and returned to the modern world, her soul transformed into its original frost fish state as it travelled between realms, which suggests that Zou Yan really IS a reincarnation of the frost fish.

You are right, Wei Jiao did seem to be waiting for her. Dude went and made himself a coffee LOL

Thank you so much for giving a detailed background on the unofficial ban over time travel dramas. It's so sad what happened to those 2 teens, but it's also sad that creatives are restricted in this way. Couldn't they just have a cautioning message at the start of each episode with a emphasis that time travel as depicted in the show is strictly fictional? Or introduce age ratings instead of such harsh censorship? Or maybe creators can start introducing time travel by walking through tunnels or gates or something. They would still need to be careful with the implication of history being changed, but at least to address public safety...

But I digress. I did take this ending to be a happy one, and that's been reinforced by the points you made in your article.

It works!!! Thank you very much. AND

You are nothing short of amazing in the deep analysis and great synthetism of the ideas in this show. Off to read about Shadow Love which for me is second solid 10/10 in cdrama this year after First Frost.

Regarding the Demon Realm arc:

This arc is quite confusing to me, because I knew that Shi Qianlu found Liao Tingyan, but: One: Why or how did she and Ruling end up in the Demon Realm after the fire/earthquake? And Two: Shi Qianlu erased Liao Tingyan's memory and changed it with the so-called daughter of his, but did he erase Ruling's memory, too? That's why I thought it might be reincarnation. Regardless of the confusion, I will change the article content. Thank you very much for the correction!

Thank you for such a well written article, I think the annoying thing is though is I read another comment where somebody said shouldn’t be up to a child’s parents to make sure they know the difference between fantasy and reality? I mean I’m not Chinese. I live in Canada so I don’t get why time travel or trans migrational travel genres are so taboo and it’s sometimes irritates me because I feel like the government treats the viewers like they’re stupid because they can’t tell the difference between what what’s real and what isn’t. If a child/teenager can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not that shouldn’t be on the government that should be on the parents. I feel like it’s a tragedy what happened to those girls but I feel like that’s a feeling of the parents not whoever produces the TV shows.  I mean, maybe I would feel differently for my child?

I just remember watching parallel worlds. We’re not only did. They have a disclaimer stating that it was a work of fiction but then slotted in randomly in the episodes. They were just have a woman painting outside with an elderly gentleman, telling the story and it completely took me out of the Narration and I ended up actually not go back to the series.

So I was also confused by this for a while, but it actually did explain it so after the explosion on the mountain, they were actually able to regain consciousness and they fled I think Ru Ling was taking her to the demon world or realm when I can’t remember his name caught up with them and blasted them in the back, knocking them out. I can only assume at this point that he used the soul cleanse on both of them to erase their memories. I had also thought it was reincarnation just because like 15 years had passed and they literally never aged, but I guess being immortal or a demon their lifespan are different so they might not age? 😂

Also, I had read somebody else’s comment that explained that he actually did know who she was in the modern world and had actually gone about setting up the company while he was waiting for her.

The ending is the start of their 4th life time together, the drama is actually a rebirth loop. The timeline is that sima jiao arrived first. He established the company and named it Sanshan (three holy mountains) technology, with a focus on resort investment, and also named the project qinggushan. He had been planning for years, while waiting for Zou yan. Zou yan slept in the hospital for one night, recovering her memories, and upon waking up, she was supposed to meet him. He rejected other proposals, and was waiting for hers instead. So in their meeting, they both recognized each other (she verbalized it and he smiled at her) and it was the start of their 4th life time together. You can watch this tiktok for the hints at the end, eng trans at the bottom https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSAEryf5B/

I love your interpretation of the ending and the entire cdrama was basically a flashback. It makes total sense. I’m now reading the manga and will read the novel too. I love this story so much.

There’s a Manga?! I was just thinking of reading the   novel, I really struggle because whenever I’ve tried to translated novels before I always find the editing or    the way it translated to be super choppy? and then I    really have a hard time reading it. I only wanted to        read this one because I wanted to find out like a how did he find her in her world? because at the end of the     drama she said there were worlds beyond what he         knew and her world world  was one of them but as far as we know  I’m guessing that he and the other deities  didn’t realize that there were more worlds beyond the ones that they knew? I also would like to know if he   came to her world before she got back or before her is he mortal like is he living an immortal life or is he still like I guess a God? Be interesting to find out.

Also curious as well because it’s like I thought that usually because they’re so manners were so intertwined that if one of them dies, the other is going to die or at least that’s the gist I got when they were trying to explain it. So that’s how she should’ve known that he was alive because I feel like if he died, she would’ve   died too? So I’m wondering with her at the end and hammer his powers or whatever shouldn’t he have not  lasted it very long either? This part is a part that I        find a bit confusing.

I thought I replied to your comment with this part above. But somehow it didn't come out. Maybe it was MDL glitch. I actually like Parallel Worlds, and I understand why they had to make it like a story because of censorship (modern fantasy is superstition). Since I finished the drama, it turns out that the painter is the daughter of the ML and FL. So, it's hinted that the adventure did happen.

In the novel, it's a real transmigration. She never returns to the real world. I put the English translation link of the novel in my article, the recap series Part 1.
