What am I even supposed to say after this?? Am I really expected to write a coherent review with all the key points on why this drama was amazing?? That would turn into a whole essay.. Forget about the story, I could literally write pages just about why I liked the FL, Liao Ting Yan or about her relationship with the ML, Sima Jiao..

The world this drama created is rich, dark and gloomy but also hopeful and full of light.. The plot and world building go far beyond what a lot of other dramas have given us.. There are countless vivid moments, beautifully painted scenes.. Sure there were some VFX issues but honestly I would overlook them because of how stunning most of the scenes were.. The world building is done so well but of course, even exemplary world building and background mean nothing if the characters don’t measure up.. There is a huge array of characters throughout the drama.. They were impressive and didn't feel wasted..

Arthur Chen as Sima Jiao was just perfect.. Grandmaster, beautiful, brutal and powerful.. He appears to be cold and arrogant with rough edges that will make you love him even more.. He endured so much.. Tortured, drained of blood and locked away for 500 years since childhood.. He is as dangerous and ferocious as he is subtle and generous.. He hides behind a mask of cold blooded killer but beneath the mask he is kind.. And it only took the FL to reveal that side of him.. He is such a complex, multilayered character..

Wang Ying Lu as Liao Ting Yan was nothing short of amazing.. She is like the most unbothered person alive.. Thrown into a fantasy world, she adapts so quickly that she literally compares working for a murderous immortal to her everyday 9 to 5 struggles.. She starts off as an oblivious protagonist.. Someone who needed to be protected and who only cared about food, rest, and sleep but eventually grows into one of the most powerful individuals in the WDBTD universe.. I absolutely loved her character development..

" You are the only one who can make me yield without a fight..
That makes you the strongest of all.. "

Now to the juicy stuff, the romance.. Romance was chef's kiss.. Absolutely amazing.. The intimacy felt sensual and delightful.. You can take that however you want.. Anyone who has watched this would agree that the leads would look just as good in a modern drama.. So casting directors, you know what to do..

" The most frightening thing isn't death itself.. But the parting it brings.. "

I am not going to lie.. There were moments when I just needed something to happen.. At times, it felt like the drama was dragging things out.. But on the other hand, everything was narrated so well that I couldn’t really complain.. Ultimately every scene felt measured, filled with meaning and significance..

Overall, it was a really good drama even though I wasn’t completely happy with the ending.. Her death and the return to the present were expected, it was obvious that’s how it would go.. I just wish they had spent more time in the present with the characters instead of wrapping it up with a simple ‘ I found you again ’ and a smile.. But honestly who cares after 33 episodes of brilliance in storytelling, performances, visuals and chemistry that led up to that final compromise?? I absolutely loved it..

A love story that transcends time and space.

In a xianxia romance that spans multiple lifetimes and universes, When Destiny Brings the Demon chronicles the journey of Liao Tingyan as she is unwillingly transmigrated into a fantastical realm of immortals and demons. Blindsided by her abrupt displacement, she attempts to carve a quiet and lazy life for herself here — but fate has other plans. Against her wishes, she falls under the mercy of the notorious grandmaster, Sima Jiao, who is said to have a cruel heart and fiery temper. However, through their forced coexistence, she learns that beneath the lord's hotheaded exterior, he is a complex and lonely soul.

The initial episodes are weighed down by an influx of info dumping, but bear with it, because your patience will be rewarded with one of the sweetest love stories to emerge from cdramaland this year. Liao Tingyan and Sima Jiao's chemistry needs to be studied. From enemies, to servant and master, to friends, to lovers — their relationship develops fast but believably so. In a world where they are both outcasts and no one is to be trusted, they are drawn to each other. Passionate, angsty, selfless — I find myself gushing over all of their tender moments, and there are so many of them. You will laugh, cry, rage, and fall in love with their love story.

The actors, Wang Ying Lu and Arthur Chen, are sensational in these roles. In less capable hands, Liao Tingyan would have come off as annoying, considering how passive and meek her character started off as. Instead, Wang Ying Lu is able to make Tingyan relatable, funny, and endearing. She effortlessly transitions Tingyan from a damsel in distress into a force to be reckoned with — someone who not only can protect herself but her loved ones as well. Arthur Chen is also perfectly casted as Sima Jiao, brilliantly portraying his loneliness, pain, and rage in a way that brings justice to the character. Watching Sima Jiao's growth from a man who is suspicious of everyone into a man capable of compassion, trust, and forgiveness because of his love for Tingyan is as healing for him as it is for me to watch. The performances of these actors moved me and I have a new profound respect for the both of them.

Aside from the characters, there are also so many other things to love. The cgi is gorgeous and it adds so much vibrancy and personality to this world. The visual impact would not have been as memorable without it. The osts are haunting, marvelously complementing the story and elevating every scene to a new level of enjoyment. I constantly hum the melodies even when I'm not watching the drama and thinking about the music evokes a strong feeling of longing for the characters and their stories. The fight scenes are riveting — it is obvious how much thought and intentions the director and action choreographers put into those sequences.

My two biggest complaints are probably that the plot was secondary to the romance and the pacing was very slow at times. There are moments in the drama where the romance will be developing with ease, but the plot isn't moving at all. The conflicts in the first half of the story are repetitive, stalling the plot. Personally, I feel the drama could have been reduced to fewer episodes to create an even more engaging story. However, I recognize that this will cut back on some of the romantic scenes, and this will be a great loss for the drama since the romance is such an important factor in the story. Therefore, I am able to overlook the drama's weaknesses in this respect.

After finishing When Destiny Brings the Demon, I am only left with positive feelings of love, admiration and satisfaction for the story. Given the genre and the censorship placed on dramas with transmigration, I couldn't have asked for a better ending. The writers neatly conclude the story with no loose ends. It is definitely a love story that transcends time and space, worthy of experiencing, and I highly recommend it for the romance lovers.

Finally a 'Star-crossed lovers' story with an ending I can accept!

It was purely by chance I stumbled on this drama, when I recognised WYL from IAN, I immediately got interested, as I never have seen her in Xianxia drama before.

I absolutely loved this terrific and remarkable masterpiece. AC's and WYL's acting was impeccable, stunning and superb. The plot was a rare gem and perfectly executed and brought to life by fantastic acting, breath taking costumes/makeup, top-tier settings and smashing CGI. I have always loved WYL's as Bao Bao in IAN s1 and IAN s2. She is incredibly cute, gorgeous, confident and talented actress. I'm very happy for her to be doing really well in this drama and getting even more versatile roles in new dramas. It's first time I have watched AC's drama. His acting skills have highly impressed and captivated me. His majestic, charismatic, stellar and bold presence in drama made him one of my favorite top actors.

SJ , 500 years old incredibly powerful immortal grandmaster, feared by all yet used and abused by greedy and evil people too, making him tired, lonely, suspicious, cold-hearted and vengeful towards everyone. But when touched by LTY's never changing sweetness, purity, compassion, kindness, care and trustworthyness and influenced by her zeal and desire to have peaceful, restful and joyful time, she changed him into a green forest who fiercely and whole heartedly loved and protected her. He gave up his heartless and cruel ways of achieving his goals and learned to care for others and show mercy for LTY's sake. Her love became the guiding light he was missing in his life. Every action, plan, glance or touch of his showed how deeply he loved her and cared for her. He was strongest yet most gentle to her in every aspect. He showed love in most beautiful ways. He always made sure to be sensitive to her feelings and decisions even when he made sacrifices for her to protect her.

This drama stole my heart because there were no endless misunderstandings and the mistrust issues were very quickly and cleverly solved by smart, thoughtful, and wise FL and ML in any situation and in any world. Both main lead had incredibly high EI( emotional intelligence) that was very refreshing, I'm so thankful that absurd amount of frustration didn't built between the main leads. Their romance was remarkable pure, deep and most important of all - very healthy. The intimacy and chemistry between them was top-notch. They made my heart flutter from beginning to the end and very rarely dramas are able to pull that off. I never got bored of their playfulness, push and pull and attraction towards each other. SJ's love wasn't possessive it was deep, pure, selfless and prophecy changing. His destiny changed from being 'the destroyer of world'to 'the lord of mercy' with LTY's influence and love.

LTY is the heart of this drama, she is the sweetest, very conpassionate and effortlessly funny (she retained her gen z aura through out the drama). It was ironic that the drama started out with SJ being a heartless immortal and LTY being most sweetest and harmless demon. The title of this drama gave me impresstion that the crule ml will be the demon lord but I loved the impressive twist by the end of the drama. What made me love her so much is her significant yet gradual character development was very beautifully executed. Even though she became demon ruler of immortal and demon world, she never lost her trueself, she remained thoughtful, witty, brave, resilient, compassionate and most importantly bubbly even though she had to go through many painful trials and unexpected situations. She bounced back in every cruel situation she was put in. She portrayed all the emotions very well, made me laugh with her silliness and moved me to tears with her pain and sorrow.

Her gentleness, care, love and inner light not only changed SJ it also inspired and reformed many people around her to abandon greed, blind love for power and fix their mistrust issues and be better versions of themselves. Other support actors and actresses portrayed their characters fantastically well. Their stunning acting and unique roles made the drama very intriguing and attractive. HNJ, the snake is one of my most favorite supporting characters.

The plot in this drama works very closely with 'star- crossed lovers' theme; the main leads' relationship was doomed by fate, circumstance, or an external force, preventing them from achieving a happy ending in many lifetimes. Also, their relationship is challenged by outside forces, such as feuding races, differing societal backgrounds, or tragic events. Their love was extremely intense and passionate, partly because they know the odds are stacked against them. However, the plot is unique due to SJ defies their ill fate and goes as far as to plot and scheme to ensure he reunites with his lover in the modern world. So, their love and longing for each other is strong enough to break the star-crossed lovers curse.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the way leads perfectly portrayed love so realisticly and naturally. Together they have created most heart warming, touching, emotional, magical, romantic and unforgettable xianxia ever for me.

I mostly give reviews only for dramas I have really enjoyed and got fairly impressed with. These days I have been lazy and have been giving suitable ratings only, however this drama has compelled me to write one immediately with its shere brilliance and undeniably stunning and fanciful execution of the story. I simply could not get enough of the main leads extraordinary, shining, captivating, charming and alluring chemistry. I really need them in a new modern drama. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this drama and recommend it to anyone who loves romance, comedy and wuxia dramas.

Came for the kiss scenes, stayed for the CP

Found this gem by pure chance. In the past few months, very high-end Xianxias were released that were overhyped too, but this one, many found it so suddenly! i'm glad i did. it's one of those rare Xianxias that kept me hooked from episode 1, and not a single episode was a filler imo( even though some episodes were a little rushed, and later I found out there were some things going on). not to mention the MOST beautiful kiss scenes and romantic scenes exist in this drama.

Story:
Romantic Xianxia about demons, gods and fairies with a time travel flavor. That sums it up. The fantasy element is strong, yet the core of this drama is romance. as someone who loves romantic dramas, this satisfied me fully lol. The leads only have eyes for each other and there is no nonsense love triangle/3rd wheel. Even through amnesiac episodes, the couple stay faithful to each other. There are some loopholes and some things left unexplained. but there was no need to do so imo. There were no filler episodes in my opinion, and all episodes looked refreshingly interesting.

Acting:
I have been familiar with Arthur Chen since his Lighter and Princess days and been following him ever since. he is such a talent; they call him the Nepo baby, but this person indeed has the talent to shine.
Wang Ying Lu. I wasn't acquainted with her before, but she is a heartthrob and looks so cute. Hope to see her in more works.

OST:
similar to many Xianxias, there are a selection of pieces played out throughout the show and the matched the mood. i even liked the bgm music.

Production:
One of the biggest issues with xianxias are the CGI they use. this one's CGI wasn't without faults but it was ok imo. The scenery and houses they made for the drama all looked appealing.

All in all, watch it for the romance and the beautiful kiss scenes! the lovebirds in this drama can't take their hands off of each other!

A Romance That Stole My Heart

The finest and best romantic xianxia drama I have watched. I never had a favourite in this genre, but now I do, and it’s definitely this drama.

I went in with zero expectations, and just a few minutes into the first episode, I was completely sold. Admittedly, the pacing was sometimes irregular, and the story itself isn’t particularly unique or different. But the romance and chemistry between the leads absolutely stole the show for me.

What made it so memorable was how the romance unfolded. It was fast-paced, direct, and deeply expressive. The leads weren’t hesitant to show their feelings for one another, and their relationship made me fall in love with the very idea of falling in love. They built their bond on trust and clear communication, which felt refreshing to watch. The skinship between them was natural, the drama fed us generously with many sweet kisses, and the ending, as expected, was well executed and satisfying.

As for the actors, I had seen ml before, but this drama made me a true fan. His acting has improved remarkably, and his micro-expressions were so captivating that it made me rewatch many scenes. His eyes conveyed anger, hatred, and love with striking clarity. It was my first time watching fl, and she did quite well too. Her comedic timing was spot on.

One aspect I genuinely loved was how fl never tried to change ml. Instead, she accepted him as he was, understood his pain and the reasons behind his behavior. She didn’t just sympathize with him—she truly empathized. This acceptance, combined with the trust and communication between them, gave their romance greater depth and meaning.

The amount of kissing this drama has...

This was the kind of drama I love when I watch xianxia: heartbreaking romance, reincarnation, worldbuilding, high stakes.
What I really liked is that this drama did not waste time setting up a lengthy exposition like we had in Ancient Love Poetry (15 episodes almost to get it going, as far as I remember).

Here we get right to the point without unnecessary bells and whistles. We get our FL, our ML, our antagonists, and go right to the love story. I actually liked that the story was heavily concentrated on the relationship between the leads instead of all other side characters and such. In all honesty, in C-dramas, it's very, very rare that I find the secondary CP interesting. Extra couple always seems like it's a filler to make sure the trauma lasts at least 30 episodes.

I liked the intimacy and the way the romance developed and the chemistry between the characters. I think the actors did a stellar job. I also adored the actress. Never seen her in anything, but she was so good in the first arc playing the role of a clueless girl who just wanted to get by without getting involved.

Now, the amount of kissing this drama has shocked me a little. In a good way, of couse. At least half the episodes have kisses, which is rare for a C-drama. I loved the intimacy in general.

I believe the only complaint I have is that the last two arcs were a tad short. Especially the third one. I think either adding more episodes to make sure each arc has equal amount of screen time or shortening the first arc to make room for the other two stories would have been a better choice. I feel like there were a lot of wasted opportunities in the third arc in the mortal realm. I would have loved to see the relationship between the leads develop differently over a longer course of time in the last bit of the story. There was room to work with more palace intrigue too. As a writer, I would follow this guidelines. But again, I don't watch to critique professionally, neither do I write xainxia scripts. I'll watch for entertainment and to get away from my real-life problems before sleep. So for me, this was a chef's kiss.

Things I look for in the epic xianxias are always timeless love, character development for both ML and FL, chemistry, decent CGI and good worldbuilding and acting of course. This drama has it all.

I'm in love with the male lead...

The chemistry between the leads? It's off the charts. I mean, their bond is what drives the whole story, and the connection feels so real and authentic. But here's the best part that blew my mind: I was genuinely shocked by the level of skinship! This romance is passionate, mature, and gives you a satisfying dose of intimacy that you just don't usually see in Cdramas. Seriously, bless the person who wrote these scenes.
And beyond the swoon, the show is just quality. The plot is super cohesive (no weird, confusing fillers!), the acting is absolutely top-tier, and the whole story feels complete and easy to follow. This series is so polished and engaging, you'll be hooked from the first episode. You won't regret watching it!

Most intense Cdrama I have ever seen.

First I want to say i started this Cdrama on Friday 10/17/25. I discovered it on here. I never seen something so beautiful, heart wrenching, or words that I can not describe. I cried a lot but maybe that is just me. The story was beautiful, brilliant. The cast the whole cast just amazing. The chemistry between the 2 main actors WOW now thats a chinese drama. Filled with passion. not some lip to lip but like sealing lips, movement with their mouths. I never seen a cdrama like that before. And i think thats what I want in a Cdrama? I want to feel what they are feeling, what they are going through, what you feel for these 2 characters but the whole drama within itself. I'd rewatch it again in a heartbeat. It was very emotional. Like i am still teary eyed trying to hold back. Thats what a drama should be or do for you that feeling that is indescribable. To leave you wondering, To maybe have your heart race. To feel just raw emotions in reality. So beautiful.. so out of this world beautiful. Oh by the way i finished today. I would go to bed at 230 am in the morning thats how Brilliant and beautiful it is. Oh and the music that they play during scenes made it more intense.. Like how the music flowed to what they were saying or thinking or that moment was so beauiful. Soundtrack, cinematography, everything just beautiful.

when destiny brings the boredom

Objective Review of the Drama
(Final Rating: 6.5/10)

(For anyone hesitating to start it or looking for a structured, balanced opinion)

1. Plot:

The drama is divided into three narrative arcs: Immortals → Demons → Humans.
The first arc is by far the strongest—emotionally rich, well-paced, and focused on Simajiao’s background and character growth. It keeps you hooked, and it's also where the leads’ relationship develops the best.

The second arc, while still decent, starts to lose impact. Some story choices create a slight sense of fatigue, even though the amnesia trope is handled relatively well. The arc picks up again toward the end.

The third arc, centered on humans, is the weakest: slower pacing, repetitive episodes, and a clear feeling of unnecessary extension. The story stays coherent, but the narrative execution is much less controlled.
You can really tell the ending could have been shortened there are a few episodes too many, which bog down the rhythm. A tighter conclusion would have worked much better.

Overall, it almost feels like each arc was written by a different team, considering how uneven the pacing becomes.

2. Characters & Development:

The true strength of the drama is Simajiao. Arthur Chen carries the entire show his growth, his emotional depth, and his attachment to Tingyan make him extremely compelling to follow from start to finish.

Tingyan is a very grounded, realistic character: she just wants to eat, sleep, and relax. But she gradually matures and becomes more responsible, especially after a key event that forces her into a situation she didn’t want. From that point on, she grows significantly.

The major flaw is that all the other characters are sidelined. They barely develop, don’t have lives of their own, and mainly exist to support the leads. They quickly end up forgotten in the background.

3. Romance:

The romance is a bit tricky to judge.
Yes, there are kisses, teasing, and cute moments but the best part is clearly in the first arc. Once the leads officially get together, their relationship stops evolving. It becomes repetitive: lots of kisses but less emotional connection it felt empty + less chemistry.

You also feel like they don’t spend enough time together; something is always keeping them apart

4. OST

Solid soundtrack. The music fits the emotional scenes well and is pleasant to listen to.

5. Recommendations

- If you're watching mainly for the story, expect a simple plot that drags a bit toward the end but remains overall watchable.

-If you're watching for the romance, you’ll likely enjoy it in the first arc .

One of the most romantic Cdramas ever!

I started this drama blindly, but I wasn’t expecting to love it so much. The chemistry of the main leads was insane, it just felt so natural and real. If you are looking for a romantic cdrama with mature leads who deal swiftly with misunderstandings, are openly affectionate with each other and willing to sacrifice for each other over and over again, you can’t go wrong with this drama.

This drama also made me a huge Arthur Chen fan. I binged Lighter and Princess because of this drama, and it was amazing too. Without a doubt, He is one of the most promising among young Chinese actors, and he dubs himself too...which is so amazing cos his voice is the truth. I hope he releases more dramas cos I’m looking forward to his works. Wang Yinglou also did an amazing job, can’t wait to see more works from her too.

Beautiful adaptation. Definitely among the top xianxia adaptation.

It is by no means perfect, but definitely among the best of novel adaptations. They managed to keep the essence of the novel, expanded some elements for more depth, but did not forget to connect it all in a sensical way.

The plot was almost never dragged out by adding cliche romantic moments or misunderstanding, which is actually harder said than done, so props to the writer and production team for that; although this does make any character that aren't the leads feel like just plot devices as very little effort was put into fleshing their story out.

This show also raised the bar on how to write and portray a romance. Beautiful, healthy and also very intimate relationship between the leads. Also love the fact that even in a relationship, they still stay true to their core. One remains a kind and simple slacker, while the othet is still that ruthless grandmaster working towards his original goal. Male lead didn't just magically turned into a self-righteous cultivator after experiencing peace and love.

Overall, this was a great experience. Can't remember the last time I have enjoyed a xianxia this much. Definitely my top favourite for this year and I can see myself rewatching this a lot.

I Said I Don’t Like Romance… and Then This Happened

This drama actually made me like romance. I almost regret ever saying “I’m not into romance,” because either this drama hit different or it just had that much of an impact. This is also the first time I fell in love with this kind of FL. Usually, I’m all about the strong, badass female leads in historical dramas—but here, she completely won me over. I loved how she explained modern things to SMJ, like what laoban means or even the “okay” gesture. And the best part? She wasn’t out here trying to master magic or power-ups—she just wanted a vacation. Relatable queen.

Three lifetimes, and they’re still loyal to each other. That’s the kind of love story I’ll sign up for. And what I really appreciate is how there wasn’t any deep, ridiculous misunderstanding like we usually see in other xianxia dramas where couples are out here trying to kill each other over miscommunication.

Wang Ying Lu—girl, I need to see you in bigger productions because your acting is too good. Thank goodness she’s slowly getting more recognition. And this was also my first Chen Fei Yu drama (my first CFY experience!), and now I’m already waiting for his upcoming projects. Same goes for the supporting cast—they really did their thing.

For me, this is my first best xianxia drama of 2025 (so far). Let’s see if the rest can compete. That last episode had me crying though. Imagine Sima Jiao in that world without LTY, and her friends living on after she left—heartbreaking. Honestly, I wished they had flipped it and let SMJ and her friends transmigrate into her world. Wouldn’t that have been such a fun and satisfying outcome?

Anyway, this drama gave me everything—love, laughs, tears. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
