Sang Yan's And Wen Yifan's Character and Growth

High School Sang Yan: He tends to be passionate, happy, and somewhat reckless as a teenager, not taking anything seriously until he fell for WYF. It was love at first sight. He did everything he could to make her notice him, took stand for her and just kept falling deeper and deeper. She had clearly asked him to not bother her because of the scolding of her aunt but keeping his pride aside for her, he still went to Beiyu and kept visiting her again and again, not really expecting much from her but he could notice how his feelings were not one-sided.

He gave the reins of his happiness in her hand, making her his priority. He kept his pride aside in their relationship. The time they were together, it was him taking most of the initiatives, the initiative she took was the promise of same university only to break it in the end. For SY, who is a pampered kid, adored by his parents and baby sister, it was a huge blow. She was not just a mere crush he could forget easily, especially when they didn't properly had a closure.

But what really makes this heartbreak different from others is that even after everything, SY didn't held any resentment towards her, no malice or anything. He just simply accepted the fact that his feelings were not reciprocated. It just shows how his heart really is. He is selfless with a pure heart which just holds unconditional love for her.

Yes! This is exactly the way I see him just from the first few episodes. It is what makes me love his character. And now that I have watched ep 14, I am seeing so much growth in Yi Fan. I am eager and afraid to see what happens wen Sang Yan finds out what really happened to her. He knows some of it, but it is going to break his heart even more when he finds out all of it.

Adult Sang Yan: He is different from his young self. He keeps his feelings inside his heart, not sharing it with anyone, even his best friends. He is cold, non-interfering, and don't care about anyone else apart from the people he loves. He loves his family and friends. He is still in the shackles of his past, pining over his unrequited first love. He had always gotten whatever he had ever wished for but the only thing that remain unfulfilled was his feelings which he thought were reciprocated but unfortunately they were not(acc. to him). He hates it that he had no connection with WYF so tries everything he could to at least have a connection with her, be able to check up on her and not be completely unaware about her world.

Meeting WYF in his bar was a surprise for which he was never prepared. He didn't wanted to acknowledge her, not because he loves his pride but he was afraid that she will again call him bothersome. Then he moved in together with her. It was his way of giving himself another chance. As much as he didn't wanted to be a bother to her, he also didn't wanted to disappear completely from her life. Before moving in together, he had made sure she is comfortable with them living together. It was only when she was ready for him to move in with her that he took the keys of house.

He can see WYF is not doing well. Her habits are not healthy because she skips food, is weak physically. So, he tries his best to provide for her, keeping in mind to not bother her. His biggest fear right now is coming across as a bother to her. So he makes sure whatever he does, she don't realize it. He don't do things like buying, feeding and safeguarding because he want her to acknowledge it. He does it out of his love for her.

Her sleepwalking was a shock to him and it actually gave him insight about how unhappy she really is. Mind you, he still don't know about the SAs she had faced. In the drama, he is more aware about her conditions than he was in the novel which actually gives us insight and provides more depth to their story.

Some people said he had stalking tendencies. It might come across as such but he don't really have stalking tendencies. In fact he never does something which might make her uncomfortable. Occasionally, he flirts with her but it is more like he is projecting his own feelings onto her and could see that rather than being uncomfortable, she is shy. In the past, he made a promise to always be beside her. So, once in a while, he just goes and check if she is doing okay. He don't know her struggles. He just makes sure she is physically fine because if he really stalked her, then he would have really got to know what hell she was really going through.

He respects her private space but now, he could clearly see that she has feelings for him, even if she don't acknowledge them. He can see that he is treated differently. Like how she rushed back to eat porridge leaving her friend outside, just because he told her to.

Now, he is just waiting for her to take a step towards him because in the past, he had did that and he was pushed away. He is a passionate person, so his love is consuming. He don't know if she will be able to handle those feelings, so he want to make sure that she loves him too. Once, he had thought she did and was cruelly rejected so now, he is standing where he stood six years back, wanting her to take a step towards him and then he will offer himself completely to her.

His growth was from a reckless teenager who would do anything for love to a responsible adult, who really don't care if his actions are acknowledged or not. As long as his beloved is happy, he is fine.He didn't let his love for her blind his future. He didn't drowned in sadness. He studied well, secured a good job, had many friends, took care of his baby sister and once in a while, went to see the same woman who broke his heart. He only wished she was genuinely happy, even if he was not in his life.

He is a person with pride but it was shattered once. He had been cold to WYF in the initial days of their living arrangement, warming up later. He has a world outside WYF too. He got promoted in the shortest period of time which clearly indicates how intelligent he is. He has everything, brains, face and emotions. His EQ is extremely high, that is the reason he is so empathetic towards WYF and even DJX. His world also revolves around others. The part of the world we see is what WYF see. He literally left WYF for a few days just to check on his sister. I don't understand how people can even call him a person with no self respect or doormat.

Another perfect character analysis! 100% everything you said about Sang Yan. I don't know who said he had stalker tendencies. My feeling was that he was checking on her or just wanted to see that she was okay. He has such self-restraint. He must have wanted so much to reach out to her everytime but he held back.

Seeing so many comments about how unlikable FL is. She was never really written to be likable as a character. She is written to show how woman struggles. SY's and WYF's love story is more like a journey for WYF to accept herself with her past and move on because life is not all about your struggles. This might contain spoilers so be careful.

WYF has four stages in the span of her life till now:

Before her father's death: When her father was alive, she was treated like a princess. You can clearly see how her whole world revolved around her parents. Her eyes are shining too. She had always been introvert because people had actually sidelined her thinking she is rude or arrogant because she is gorgeous while she is just someone who struggles with interactions. A normal thing. She don't care about anyone or rumors because she thinks they hold no value in her life. SY was the one to initiated friendship between them, and it was not because they were desk mates but it was how he wanted it to be. Her personality is very gentle and respectful. She is also someone with no temper at all. This is the WYF he fell in love with.

After her father's death: SY was an eye witness to the changes WYF had gone through in her life. After her father died, she didn't even had enough time to accept this cruel reality before her mother dropped a bomb on her that her mother is marrying again. She was thrusted into a family she was not welcomed or accepted. Rather than siding with her daughter, her mother left her to her grandmother who soon passed away too. This time too, her mother shirked her responsibility away, handling it to her uncle. His wife disliked her, ill-treated her, fed her mind that she don't deserve good things and this is still something she lives with. She still hesitates to buy things for herself but she is not hesitant to spend on SY. She just saw him in her gifted coat and decides to work hard to be able to afford those things for him. She wants to spoil him. Even after all this, she didn't loose her spark. She still smiles. She was the one to take initiative to go to the same university as SY and she was extremely happy about it too. She will always smile in his presence. SY is not a fool. He could clearly see that WYF liked him too because she gave him reasons.

After attempted SA: This was the change that shaped her as who she is today. She turned towards her mother, expecting her to at least support her this time only to see how she was abandoned again. It has been years and her mother still don't understand what she did wrong. It was not just attempted on her body, but on her soul. It left the 17 year old with scar because even the people around her blamed her. She still stood tall, calling police though it resulted in nothing. This was the moment she realized that she can never rely on her mother anymore. A woman who is supposed to love her selflessly, chose her step daughter over her. It was not like she enjoyed hurting him. She was in pieces and picking up those broken pieces is not something a boy can do. He might have loved her a lot but she was not aware of that intensity. She thought breaking his heart is the easiest way to push him away from a scarred person like her.

Present WYF: After everything happened, all she really wanted to do was survive. She is a prideful person, so rather than depending on her mother for everything, she simply took what her father left for her and then worked in a noodle shop for her expenditure. Her mother was not actively involved in her life. She had financial problems, studies, her own traumas, her fears, her attachment issues, her abandonment issues. After all these problems, she can't really sit around and think about OH. This boy deserved my love. I forgot to give him that or I broke his heart. According to her, he too must have moved on too. She didn't had any time to think about anything else. Her crush, love whatever it was, it was not greater than the problems she had in her life. Meeting him again after so many years, the guilt which was always present double folded itself. For WYF, being alone is the solution. She don't even talk with her friends much. Even after all she had gone through, she is still so kind towards everyone. She still cares about him though it was very subtle in starting episode but later we realized how highly she thinks of him. When everyone finds SY as narcissist, arrogant, cold and broody. She sees him as a ball of sunshine who deserves everything best. She just needs help, both medically and lovingly.

Love for her is a luxury. She is not taught how to love but she still chased after him, knowing all her shortcomings. She let him stay with her in the same house. It shows her trust on him even after years of not meeting each other. With time, she will grow as a lover and a character too.

You explained well and I hope people will read and understand. Without reading the book, I understood her pov. I still feel so bad for Sang Yan that she hurt him and that all these years he still remembers the hurtful words. But I also understand that this young girl went through more than some adults could handle.
