Why is it legal and even common to put down animals when they are terminally ill but we question euthanasia when it comes to humans? People deem us being compassionate to end the suffering of our dogs or cats but cruel when we have this option for beings who are able to articulate their desire to end their pain?
My grandmother was a vegetable for five years after a severe fall, couldn't move couldn't talk, and clearly wanted to go. One day during one of those five years, she choked and almost went but the doctors said that they have to revive her no matter what. She survived that but you can see from her eyes that she's been begging to go, it was heartbreaking. We are lucky that we have funds to support her for five years but many do not have this option.
When she died, you could see her smiling that she was finally at peace and so were we. My grandfather was almost in the same situation, towards the end of his life after suffering from progressive cancer, my parents saw how he suffered in pain.
After that ordeal from both my grandparents, my parents signed living wills where they told us that they do not want to be resuscitated.
While these DNR directives are not the same as asking for Euthanasia, I believe that ultimately we have a say in how we live and also on how we die (if that can be controlled).
From the POV of those left behind, I think it's just selfish of us to prolong their painful existence on this earth, just to appease ourselves of more time with our loved ones. From the POV of those who are dying, why would I burden my family with the care of taking care of me when I'm already in a veg state?
Thankfully, I live in a country where both Euthanasia and Medically-assisted dying are Legal. I fully believe in Quality of life over quantity of life and that we should be masters of our own fate.
