你是迟来的欢喜 ‧ Drama ‧ 2026

⚫️Plagiarism case:

Background story from the novel: Su City leaders had issued the order to demolish the old neighborhood; Ruan Yu family's old house, XHS grandma and Zhou Jun were all part of the neighborhood. Either they had to take a settlement or move to the housing in the suburbs. RY family and XHS grandma take the settlement and grandma moves in with XHS mom&sister, Zhou Jun family move to the suburbs.

Ruan Yu, runs out of inspiration and goes to Su City to sort her old things before the house is demolished and while rummaging through her old stuff finds her personal diary. She decides to turn her secret crush into a story.

XHS sister, Xu Huaishi, while going through an old box in her grandma's home around the same time, finds an old phone of Xu Huaisong. When she checks it (after charging it as shown in the drama 😅) she finds the unsent drafts in his phone. She finds it amusing that her brother had a crush and impulsively decides to post it. She creates an account as "poet" and posts it as a story in a online bookstore. It becomes viral overnight.

This happens before Ruan Yu gives ths outline of her story to Mingying to publish. So "Poet"'s story gets published first and when Ruan Yu's gets published there is a public outcry obviously that Ruan Yu plagiarised due to similar storyline. Please note Ruan Yu's pen name is 'Lily Vale'.

Cen Si Si- she is from the same school as RY and XHS, and is jealous of RY, also a rival in profession (writer), and hates her because her love interest Li Shi Can takes a liking for RY.

She somehow finds out the "poet" is from the same school and introduces herself to Xu Huaishi as her senior. She sweettalks her into putting a case against Ruan Yu.

Even at this time "poet" doesn't realize that the other author is her brother's crush as Ruan Yu is under the pen name "Lily Vale" .

Then on a particular morning, sister sees that a writer from Jinjiang posted a long comment on Weibo. Though this person didn’t name Ruan Yu specifically, it was quite clear to the readers that this person was talking about Ruan Yu. The person said that Ruan Yu not only plagiarized the new writer but also bullied her, forcing her to give up her pen name. The poster claimed that Ruan Yu’s actions were a shame to all the creative writers.

Then Xu Huaishi realised that someone was deliberately slandering RY trying to mislead the public opinion. Someone had intentionally stirred the whole thing up to begin with. She and her classmate Zhao Yi had been too naive about the whole incident. So when Ruan Yu traces her and asks to meet her she gets scared and agrees to withdraw the case and publicly apologise. When Zhao Yi traces Lily Vale, he tells that her name is Ruan Yu and this rings a bell in Xu Huashi's mind and she quickly goes to the art gallery room in school to find that "RYXHXHS".

This discovery compels her to call Huaisong and spill everything she did and that's how he lands up suddenly in China.

As he the only one who knows how to solve the case 😉

So in essence there is no stealing, plagiarism. It's just two versions of the same story ☺️☺️

Actually, Cen Sisi had already explained it in the recording of her phone conversation with Ruan Yu before. She had said that she had only hired a small group of spammers to test the water and didn’t understand herself why the topic went viral all of a sudden. So who is behind all this??

⚫️Zhou Jun case: Ok we know Zhou Jun used to be their class monitor. His gf is Yao Xin who works for Huan vision productions which is trying to acquire the copyrights of her novel to adapt it into a drama. In episode 21 we see her negotiating with RY regarding this and then Zhou Jun and XHS join them.

Zhou Jun and his gf plan to visit RY's parents in the suburbs. On the way they have an argument. Zhou Jun suspects her of cheating and checks her phone. This escalates and after the altercation he gets out of the car and she goes ahead driving. He wanders along the mountainous road and finally reaches RY parents home. There he gets the news that Yao Xin his gf is dead.

This Yao Xin is found dead by the highway and the last person she calls from her phone is Zhou Jun. So the cops track him. He holds Mr Ruan as hostage to try and escape. By then RY mom calls her and she hurries there. Learning the situation, she offers to help the cops and then he calms down and surrenders but does not plead guilty of murder of his gf. He is accused because of the last words from his gf "Let me go Zhou Jun". But could it be "Let me go, Zhou Jun" as though she was actually calling him out for help?

This case is very important as it happens to be very similar to the case that XHS dad handled 10years ago.The clues from this case will lead to the murderer of the old case solving this arc.

⚫️The old case involving XHS dad:

10 years back, XHS dad, a criminal defense lawyer, takes on a rape and murder case in Su city. He represented the accused, a 35 year old man, a graduate from Su City University. Due to lack of evidence after a thorough investigation, the accused was acquitted. During the proceedings and after the judgement, the victims family and the entire town targeted their family for supporting a "murderer" escape his punishment and outcasted them. Unfortunately the real murderer was never found so they kept targeting the family for 'helping' a murderer. At that time his parents would frequently argue which led to irreconcilable differences. His mom never wanted his dad to take on the case in the first place. Even before, she could never understand and didn't want his dad to take cases to defend accused murderers. Even18yr old XHS felt that his dad was a disreputable person who ‘takes money to avert misfortune for people.’ 'accomplice to murderer'

XHS, after studying law and criminal defense laws in particular, understood that in reality his dad is a very upright man and doesn't mind taking such cases to uphold justice for the innocent. It cleared his misunderstanding about the ambiguity in the legal system which XHS thought was a loophole in law.

In the later part of the novel they will come across another similar case (Zhou Jun) , the clues of which will lead to the murderer of the old case and that's how he successfully clears his father's name and brings peace and conclusion to the three families involved- Xu family, the victim's Wang family and the accused Jiang Yi, who could never return to normal life despite being acquitted.

⚫️Fire incident:

We have already seen in one of the episodes that while XHS and RY were in the elevator (at his apartment complex) a young girl joins in. When it malfunctions she goes into a panic. When the elevator gets sorted, she hurries saying she was going for an audition straight. This girl Sun Miaohan is selected for the role. Guess what! As the FL for the drama adapted from her novel. Being a scriptwriter, RY meets her in one of the team meetings. One day as she was going back to her (XHS) apartment she meets Sun Miaohan and Wei Jin in the elevator. She recognises Wei from an earlier meeting related to the drama that they had; also notices that the girl was looking anxious and scared and when that Wei starts to hold her waist she understood the situation. When she gets off she remembered that Xu Huaisong had mentioned to her when they were video chatting that once the fire detector triggered, the alarms in the entire building would activate. She brings an overheated pan close to the fire detector to trigger the fire alarm 😇. She succeeds as that Wei drives away and the girl is safe. However because it was heat that triggered the fire alarm and not smoke, and she kept the heated pan for too long, the fire sprinkler system got automatically activated and she and the house got flooded. XHS had just arrived from US and seeing all this commotion of people coming out of building he instinctively goes in the opposite direction to check on RY. Now should they report Wei Jin as 1) he was too powerful 2) as a major investor for the drama, if this goes out the drama would be shelved

⚫️Wei Jin:

A bigwig. A producer for films and dramas. Several high contacts. Has the final say!

Sun Miaohan didn't want to involve the cops as it would mean she couldn't be a part of the drama and it would be too minor a case to arrest or punish a bigwig like Wei Jin. But the cops get there anyway and on investigating the scene at her apartment they find that there was drugs in the cigarette stub that he smoked at Sun Miaohan's place (police dog helps) and start secretly investigating his background. XHS and his law firm also offered to help. It turns out Wei Jin was also from Su City, the same year as Jiang Yi, the accused whom XHS dad helped 10 years ago. Another mind blowing discovery is when RY identifies him in the picture that was taken during a party just before Jiang Yi went out with his gf who was later was found sexually assaulted and murdered.

Plagiarism case, Zhou Jun case, XHS dad case all linked to the criminal. The cops and the lawyers get to the bottom of the cases and he is convicted.

Thus they bring closure not only to the three families that were affected by XHS dad's case but also brings justice to Zhou Jun, his GF family and Sun Miaohan.

The plagiarism plot- is there a legal, ethical and moral conflict of interest and were they handled well?

Technically, Xu Huaisong wasn't her lawyer. It was Liu Mao who represented her case in court. Even so, Xu Huaisong helped her prepare for the case. so yes, we can agree a conflict of interest existed. But I think the legal and ethical conflicts were managed well.

The Core Conflict: Xu Huaisong's sister unintentionally posted a similar storyline because she found and read his old diary drafts. This led to Ruan Yu being unfairly accused of plagiarism and hiring Liu Mao/ Xu Huaisong to defend her rights. This created a direct professional dilemma because Xu Huaisong represented Ruan Yu in a case directly targeting his own sister's work.

The Resolution: To avoid legal and ethical pitfalls, Xu Huaisong and his sister took proactive steps to clear Ruan Yu's name. His sister issued ar online apology, publicly clarified the misunderstanding, and took down her own story. Because Xu Huaisong's sister did not intentionally steal Ruan Yu's story, and Ruan Yu did not steal hers, a formal legal battle is averted. Instead of a prolonged litigation that would force Huaisong to formally recuse himself due to the family connection. This resolves the legal conflict of interest.

It is Cen SiSi who triggers further internet trolls falsely accusing the parties of using money to sweep the incident under the rug. So the case now isn't actually within family, it is between Ruan Yu and Cen Si Si.

Huaisong needed to carefully sort through the evidence, timelines, and drafts to legally resolve the plagiarism dispute safely. Disclosing that the opposing party or the source of the conflict was his own younger sister could complicate Ruan Yu's trust in his legal handling of the case. Ruan Yu not only wanted to prove that her copyright was stolen but also wanted to prove the originality of her work defending her creative integrity. She went around asking other lawyers for help but they advised her to approach only for copyright infringement and wouldn't agree to defend the creative integrity issue. Only he knew the truth and hence he would handle the case safely and smartly. It was a mutual need really.

He had harboured a secret unrequited high school crush on Ruan Yu for ten years. Of course it was a calculated strategy to reconnect with her and get close to her. Because they had spent a decade apart with unresolved misunderstandings, if he immediately confessed that the entire legal dispute was tied to his own family, it would have been too overwhelming. By maintaining his professional persona, he could slowly break down her walls without making her defensive. Another reason was that Ruan Yu was deeply embarrassed because the male lead in her novel was literally based on him, and she was terrified he would notice the similarities. Xu Huaisong played along with this awkward "stranger"dynamic, so he could sort out the legal aspects without further embarrassing her. There was no malicious intent! He was going to come back and explain everything (Epi 23) anyway but by that time his sister had already couriered the phone to Ruan Yu.

It was only because of the time that they spent together as lawyer-client and the coincidental time they spent in the village that she could see the real Xu Huaisong and understand him and his strengths and weaknesses. He too had the opportunity to show his true self and so he was in a position to clarify the misunderstanding about the plagiarism. Not to mention she was also in a position to understand and accept what happened and why and then make her own decision. If you have seen closely, he waited outside her door when he returned from US, waiting for her response and reaction (to her knowing the truth) now. As if to say 'It was always a two way crush but the ball is in your court now'.

It's not about falling in love but returning to it- I think the emotions were handled beautifully

The story would have been different if neither had the crush presently or if one of them had moved on. As one reviewer said it is all in the timing.
