Duty After School alternate ending
By Teiji
DISCLAIMER: Due to how stupid the original ending was, I’ve decided to write this alternate ending and brainwash myself into believing it is the one true ending. It is unofficial and fan-written. If you like the original ending, then ignore this. If you don’t think the students deserve that fate, then read on. There will be SPOILERS if you have not seen the series.

This script starts right after Yeong Soo killed Il Ha and the students go back to their old school.
The scene is a dark, rainy night. Everyone is sitting in their classroom resting. Yeong Soo decides to go outside to vent his anger, yelling at the sky. But then he starts to hallucinates that Il Ha is back to get revenge. Yeong Soo falls down, and the hallucination looks down on him and calls him a “useless piece of shit” and “that’s all you’re ever gonna be.” It also says, “You’ll never get into college,” triggering Yeong Soo to get madder as he crawls on the ground. Yeong Soo then picks up his gun and is about to shoot at the hallucination, but it disappears.
While Yeong Soo is outside, So Yeon recalls bits and pieces of what had happened. She tells everyone in the class that she remembers having a heated argument with Yeong Soo about CSAT being cancelled, and then she lost consciousness afterward. She also heard Il Ha and Yeong Soo arguing over something a bit later. And even though she was in a daze, she was sure there was no spheres nearby.
After everyone hears this, they start to doubt Yeong Soo’s story and suspect he had harmed Il Ha. Class President Yoo Jung tells everyone to stay calm and not to doubt Yeong Soo until they find more information and proof. Jang Soo decides to go outside to bring Yeong Soo in for more information. As soon as he opens the classroom door, two shots are heard. Everyone gasps as Jang Soo falls down to the ground with blood all over his chest. Yeong Soo, with his gun on his hands, enters the classroom slowly. Everyone is shocked and asks what’s going on. Yeong Soo points his guns at everyone and goes on a monologue about how he just wants to take the CSAT and go to a good college, how So Yeon lies to him about CSAT being cancelled, how Il Ha was bullying him, how he is forced to killed him, and now this.
As Yeong Soo prepares to shoot everyone in the class to hide his previous murder, a single sphere appears and lunges at him from the outside of the classroom. He hears the sphere and turns to shoot it, but his gun is jammed. The sphere successfully grabs onto his face and sucks the life out of him. Everyone screams and picks up their guns. Yeong Soo now lies dead next to Jang Soo. The sphere proceeds to attack everyone but is quickly killed by everyone firing at it continuously. The students then mourn the loss of Jang Soo. (That opening scene from the last episode before the “11 hours earlier” did not happen.)
A few months pass. The government has created an advanced weapon and has wiped out 99% of the spheres. Society has returned to normal. Although it is not shown, we can assume that students’ parents were safe in the shelters.
The scene changes to a bright sunny day. Everyone is in the classroom, wearing graduation costumes. They all had their hair and makeup done. Some were excessive; some were not. The guys are handsome and the girls are beautiful. There is a lot of noises and everyone is chatting cheerfully. No one is left out. The girls finish putting on their makeup and talk about how they all look like famous celebrities (Blackpink members, IU, etc.). The guys look at the girls in amazement at how over the top their makeup was. Ha Na and Hui Rak are seen flirting about the shade of his skin tone color. Meanwhile, Tae Man jokes about how the girls’ makeup looks awkward and scares him. He then praises Yu Jeong as the prettiest without any makeup. Everyone tells him to be quiet because Yu Jeong has spent 2 hours on her hair and 1 hour on her makeup. Yu Jeong, embarrassed, runs out of the room as Tae Man chases after her. Then, the guys discuss about a secret chatroom that Deok Joong created, ranking the girls in the class. Deok Joong tells the guys that this is their secret and not to let the girls know or they’ll be dead. The guys all say they voted and jokingly ask each other who they voted for.
The scene changes to outside the classroom, where Chi Yeol and Na Ra were alone together. Chi Yeol finally musters up his courage and nervously confesses to Na Ra. He tells her that she is really pretty today and that he has always liked her. To Chi Yeol surprise, she tells him that she also likes him. They both shyly smile. Unbeknown to them, Deok Joong is eavesdropping. Deok Joong quickly goes in the classroom and tells everyone what he heard. They all sneak outside the door and tease Chi Yeol and Na Ra. Tae Man and Yu Jeong also make it back to the classroom to tease them. Laughter fills the hall.
Class President Yoo Jung proposes that they all stay connected after graduating and that no matter where everyone is in the future or how busy they are, every year, on this day, they will gather together. To her, they are not just comrades. They are not just friends. They are a FAMILY who has been through thick and thin together with her during the past year. Everyone agrees and smiles happily.
The scene now changes to a CSAT testing room (presumably before the graduation day). Everyone is taking the CSAT. On the test, there is a box that says “Did you participate in the war? Yes/No.” The students think back at the war and resoundingly select “Yes.” The screen fades to black. The theme song starts to play. A montage (images that gradually zoom in, one after another) of the whole series starts to play, showing (in order):
- the students getting drafted (epi 1)
- Yeong Hoon’s death (epi 1)
- the training after school (epi 2)
