Silent Reading, a great novel, I love the audio drama, the voice acting 👌 If this is inspired by BL, why bother. The urge to control female sexuality…the CCP is so male-centered 😩 meanwhile indebted local governments earn revenue through searching and fining danmei writers.

I am actually not a fan of the rebirth and transmigration trope in cdrama/cnovel. I've not seen this trope being used so frequently in any other country. I am very glad that the drama like Prisoner of Beauty and this Female General changed that into something more relatable.
To each their own. It's a subjective matter. Rebirth elements made every decision of FL make sense if the story originally had that trope. Like how she knows about future/predictions, how she acted in carefully manners with "experience", how she put attentions to some things, how she predicted some events, how she decided to take actions about something, how she choose her love interest based on "something", and etc. Usually, Chinese dramas who originally had this trope still keep FL briliant minds and intelligence to move the stories. But they still write the script with the way that FL still has knowledge of past events, it made the FL actions become more mature, more ambitious, and more briliant than what the girls thinking around their age (16-18 yo).
For example, Zhuang Han Yan from The Glory (how she planned all the briliant schemes to make all people show their true colors with well done executions), Xiao Qiao from TPOB (how she wanna switch her marriage to Wei Shao + bring Panyi as dowry to prevent herself to be killed by Wei Shao in the spot), Qin Wan from Coroner's Diary (how she is so talented in all medical skills + autopsy like she had more experience than senior doctors in the palace with her young age), and etc. They have the complex minds of people who transmigrated from the future. Please don't misunderstand. I don't have complaints about this. I prefer smart and strong FLs rather than weak and dumb FLs. But you forced me to point out something like that. Normally, i will just enjoy the story without thinking too critical, they are super briliant and that's it. I still buy the whole story without questions.
Personally, I really enjoy Rebirth dramas. I like how FLs are so briliant and superior with this elements. And I also enjoy those dramas who removed Rebirth elements but they still keep FL briliant moves and minds like they had knowledge of the past. It's still entertaining. And I love all of them. I love briliant schemes, palace politics, game of thrones, noble families conflicts + great romance stories in Costume dramas.
(I saw that you used SOKP Xie Wei profile picture, i guess that you also watch SOKP. It's a Rebirth drama and it's clear that you also loved it).
Yes. I love SOKP so much, love the rebirth concept too at first because that was my first drama with such concept. And I thought it was a brilliant concept until I realise that it is actually not a very original idea. Authors really like to write this trope and there’s sooooo many stories like this.
I love smart FL too but knowing what is going on to happen in the future feels like she gets a free pass to cheat for a better result. It’s like you get a peek at the answer to your exam.
I said I’m not a fan of rebirth trope doesnt mean I hate it. I will still watch it and will enjoy it very much (just like Blossom and SOKP) because I know for sure these FL in such stories are usually very smart and has strong survival skills. I actually looking forward to Rebirth of malicious empress.

Most of original novels from those popular strong and briliant FLs in the dramas are Rebirth stories. The authors are so good in creating these kind of stories. No need to complain. Just enjoy the dramas. It's a popular trend and we will get more dramas like this in the future. They may have the same Rebirth elements but still, their stories are still different from each others. SOKP stories are different with Blossom stories. Blossom stories are different with The Princess Royal stories. All of them are different with The Double, The Glory, Coroner's Diary, and etc. We still get various stories from this. I don't see any problem with it. Some reviewers even said LOTFG should keep the Rebirth elements because earlier episodes become so choppy and confusing. If they don't cut Rebirth parts, many people will understand LOTFG's FL first phase stories more 100%.

As Apar’ original post mentioned the Mainland Chinese censorship rules officially restrict time-travel plots — but the rule is more nuanced than it sounds, and Dreaming Back to the Qing Dynasty (梦回) fits through those loopholes.
Here’s why it got through:
⸻
1. The ban is not absolute — it’s about “disrespectful” or “frivolous” history.
In 2011, China’s National Radio and TV Administration (NRTA) issued guidance saying time-travel stories that “distort history,” “frivolously treat historical figures,” or “promote superstition” should be avoided.
• The concern was shows like Palace and Scarlet Heart making emperors into modern romance idols or treating history as a playful backdrop.
• It wasn’t a blanket ban — dramas could still use time travel if the historical period is portrayed with respect, moral lessons, and no mockery of national heritage.
2. The “dream” framing avoids “real” time travel
Dreaming Back to the Qing Dynasty doesn’t have a physical time machine or scientific magic. The heroine’s journey is framed as:
• A dream
• A spiritual/psychological experience
• Possibly a metaphor for reincarnation or memory
This is important — if it can be read as fantasy or inner vision, it sidesteps the idea of actually “changing” history.
3. Story aligns with “positive values”
Censors tend to allow historical fantasy if it:
• Promotes traditional culture
• Portrays imperial history respectfully
• Ends with a return to reality and acknowledgement of the “proper” historical outcome (no alternate endings where the heroine rewrites the dynasty’s fate)
In Dreaming Back, history unfolds as it’s “supposed” to — no overthrowing emperors, no modernizing the Qing, no satirical take on the court.
4. Loophole: “Historical romance” > “time travel”
NRTA is far more lenient with what it categorizes as a costume romance with mystical elements than a pure time-travel show.
So the marketing, scripts, and approval paperwork usually describe it as:
“A romance drama with dream sequences set in the Qing Dynasty” rather than “A time travel drama.”
Hope that clarifies these doubt. So for most production team and directors or scriptwriters would choose not to use such plots as it risk being shelved, hence they will deliberately change the ‘reborn’ element.
Thank you for more informations. Do you know the upcoming costume dramas that still keep Rebirth elements? Because from Apar explanations, censorship still allow Rebirth elements when FL was going back to the past in her own body, not other characters. For now, we only have SOKP, Blossom, Si Jin, The Princess Royal, Lost Track of Time, Scent of Time for full length dramas. I know there are also many short dramas about Rebirth elements. But they are not going under review like full length dramas. So they can be more free to apply Rebirth and time travel elements for short dramas.

Yup, I do feel it’s possible for such script to surface and especially a lot of novel writers like to use rebirth element. So with the grey area on this topic, as above discussed about BL topic. we may see more and more directors/production team being creative and adventurous to submit these dramas and hope to get in across;)
Chinese Empress:
Not only this, the problem is the success. China never cared a lot about BL expect if it's novel or donghua. They had a whole event about Silent Reading by Priest.
"The problem is the success". This contradicts your point about China not being homophobic. It's just one example of China being "homophobic" because they are "afraid" of any possibility that homosexual people may enter China's mainstream consciousness.
Among East and Southeast Asian countries, China is arguably the most homophobic outside of Muslim-majority nations like Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

if China were honophobic, they won't even produce BL. China is NOT homophobic at all, but me too, i am against the labeling and promotion. No one is interested in sexuality, it's a private matter and should stay private until we die.
The promotion is because it shouldn't be a forced gayification, like heterosexual people are abnormal now. No, homosexual are just like everyone else, and i don't see any point to see them as special or different. That's why China don't promote them and it's right.
At least it's not like Thailand being porn and homophobic without any proper content.
