It's a bit similar to geographic profiling. You are acutely aware of your biases, develop the skills to understand different viewpoints of experiences you have not lived, and you analyse what is available using methodology and logic while cognizant of your own emotions, to aim to keep your analysis as balanced as possible. Whatever is disclosed must meet certain criteria. The little things usually provide vital clues. If you don't have enough information, obtain the information you need. And no matter how smart one is: Never Assume (including never assume you are talking to someone less intelligent than yourself or projecting not-yet-ascertained assumptions and motives of how you think they feel or behave onto them). Strategy is wisdom. IQiyi Light On series is good for practising and/or developing such skills.

Motives of people can usually be condensed into one sentence, while the methodology of achieving their desires can be as complex or successful/unsuccessful as possible.
