I think one reason cdramas have the thing where the protagonist falls off a cliff to certain death but becomes utterly transformed instead could be the influence of Buddhism on Chinese culture. In Chan Buddhism, there's a goal to surrender to an absolute reality, and once the practitioner lets go of the world of suffering and delusion, they're transformed / reach enlightenment.
