A Blue Sky (14x40min, 2021)

Mekh (meaning Sky), who has a serious heart condition, and Kheav (meaning Blue) are best friends, growing up together in the countryside. When Mekh finally confesses his feelings to his best friend, Kheav rejects him and leaves. Seven years later, after a bad break up, Kheav comes back and rekindles his friendship and maybe more with Mekh.

When you see "heart condition", the ending of a story is pretty much obvious so you do not need me to tell you that this is a tragedy. Well filmed (some beautiful cinematography but that countryside is beautiful so...) and acted (starring K Sinh, a very handsome actor, who played the boytoy in Boy Toy: this guy can emote!). The music is nice, tugging on those heartstrings with a vengeance!

Sastra Films are now releasing their old BLs for the international audiences on youtube.

CAMBODIAN (KHMER) BL 5

Ending Friend (7x20min, 2024)

After initial animosity, Same and Hengly become close friends. But when Same confesses to Hengly, their friendship is ruined. Their friends gather together in order to give them a chance to reconcile during a trip to the seaside.

Directed by Kim Visal, who has many different roles in the production of this series (if end credits are to be believed!) including acting (he plays Same's older brother, if I am not mistaken), this fluffy romcom looks very much Thai: silly music, sound effects, school uniforms, supportive friends and family, trip to the shore. The only things missing are screaming fujoshis and screeching femgay comic relief characters and this low budget drama is all the better for it.  The actors look young and inexperienced but are rather confident. They do some lovely dead fish kisses! ;-)

Best Boyfriend (2024. 2x18min)

Chen and Barang have been best friends for a long time. While Chen is serious and hard working, all Barang wants is to lie around and do nothing while talking nonsense and being generally rude. On the cusp of going to the city to study, Chen's feelings toward his best friend are starting to change. Will he act on them?

Nothing much happens here, because there is a sequel which Sastra Film have not released on youtube yet. But this is just another low budget endeavour which is sorely lacking chemistry though there are fleeting moments of comedy. So we take what we can get! I wish they were more daring when the storylines are concerned. This is just a rough piece of fluff...

The Promise (2025. short film 33min)

Hengly and Same are a couple very much in love. They move into a new house and are surprised by a weird Granny hanging around the neighbourhood and saying cryptic things. While Same is a bit worried about the future and the possible reactions to their couple by the people around them, Hengly keeps reassuring him and promising him love forever. One evening, Hengly is late coming home and Same is freaked out by Granny's strange behaviour.

This is the latest offering by Kim Visal (producer of Ending Friends) and this time he made a horror with a message; beware what you promise, it may come true! There are a lot of PPLs taking up time in completely unrelated scenes (washing laundry, taking a shower for long minutes without even showing abs...useless, I'm telling you!LOL) but the story is interesting and with an unexpected twist in the end.

BURMESE (MYANMAR) BL 12

You Are My Destiny (a.k.a. Reason of Love, 2024; 8x15min with episode 3 split into 3A & 3B !)

Bhone urgently moved into a new place which came with a condition: he must let the current occupant stay till the end of month. When the current tennant turns out to be Chan, his annoying and disgusting coworker, this forced cohabitation is off on a shaky start.

This was quite cute, very tame with a final forhead kiss but a BL nevertheless. It is low budget and the sound is badly recorded while the background music is too loud and distracting. But this being a Myanmar production and keeping in mind that the current junta in power is not well disposed towards the LGBT content, we should support productions such as this one. It is a fun short watch.

BURMESE (MYANMAR) BL 13

Best Friend (2025, 4x8min)

Paing Kha and Tun Kho are best friends who share the same flat. One day, Tun Ko's girlfriend MiMi comes for a visit and disturbs the balance of the "best friends" relationship.

I cannot stress enough how incredible the very existence of a Myanmar BL actually is since there are 0 LGBT rights there, and that sodomy (regardless of gender) is considered against the law and same sex activity (regardless if they are consensual or even done privately) are punishable by imprisonment which can lead up to 20 years in prison.

Kudos to the production. This is a Chinese style bromance, where the romance is just hinted at (glances, touches, hugs etc.) but nothing is explicitly said. Nevertheless it is very much a BL and no one can  say otherwise.

Love And Twisted (2024. 4 x 30min)

Vireak is a university student. He is openly dating Rayuk which makes him a perfect target for homophobic bullying and beating. At home, Vireak continuously argues with his father, who considers him lazy and too soft. Furious, on his birthday, Vireak wishes his father to disappear. The next morning, he wakes up in his father's body.

This is in equal measure a BL as it is a body swap comedy with many questionable plot points first of which being keeping the body swap secret and therefore have the father date his son's boyfriend.  The idea of having a body swap as a learning experience for both father and the son was well executed. The rest...I am not so sure. On the other hand, the actors are both brilliant, managing to portray the swap convincingly.

Sastra Films continue to release their app dramas on youtube, slowly very slowly. I guess the app subscriptions are not really taking off though they seem to have a big number of BLs and GLs there that may attract international audience.
