exciting to have trips planned! I would love to visit the far east but health problems and money are barriers for me. Also I’d be kind of scared to travel as a lesbian couple to a lot of these places. I did travel a lot in my 20s and even lived abroad for a few years and worked in Latin America for a few summers, but it was all a long time ago. So I’ll just enjoy vicariously through others now. I think it would make watching Asian shows so much richer to actually have been to those places!
to all the language learners, I have been self-studying Thai. It’s really hard. I’m good at picking up language from shows, though, so i really just want to remember what I hear and learn a little more. I’d love to study Korean and Japanese too but I can only do one at a time. The good news is that if I look away from a Thai show for a minute I often have a sense of what’s going on, which is progress! And with all the shows I watch I can at least say I love you in 4 Asian languages! Also where I live in San Diego there are tons of East Asian immigrants so I can usually recognize what language they are speaking, even if I can’t say anything in return. I do try to say thank you in their languages when I go to different restaurants though. I don’t think they’re impressed though. oh well.
also I had a really interesting discussion in the GL lover’s group about pronouns in Asian languages if anyone’s interested. I want to understand better how Thai especially use pronouns for different queer people and why.
