I may get flack for this but I kinda prefer the 8 ep format more than the 12 or longer lately. Especially after watching Moonlight Chicken which had quite a few major issues including multiple strained family relationships, a pissed off ex, the death of only family member, death of an ex with unresolved feelings, struggles with money, etc. While not every issue was resolved in a neat and tidy bow, they were left in a satisfactory place where anything longer would have just felt like unnecessary filler, in my opinion.
So I think it's doable, but it has to be done right, which is really tough.
Oh, I have nothing wrong with the length, the problem is the length for a story that incorporates no less than 3 traumatic conflicts, a romance conflict, and a workplace conflict (at least).
An emotionally, financially, and physically abusive mother, a pedophilic uncle who appears to have tried to sexually assault him, and an obsessive/stalker ex who also appears to be trying to sexual assault him are not meant to be covered at the same time in the span of 8 episodes. 2, maybe. 3, something is more than likely to suffer from insufficient resolution or rushing. These are major issues that will need to be addressed in a certain way to make this relationship work. And I really hope they don't do a timeskip cop out to skip over them being handled.
Sure, there might be a way to do it, and I hope they do, but the doubt is extremely high. It has me beyond wary for how this drama will continue.
