On my list with a high priority, so I can find it again when I'm especially in need of a smile :)
Your phrasing has me thinking about what people consider "compelling" in a love story. That might make for a good conversation topic. I don't do well with a lot of angst so compelling for me is mostly about how believeable I find their relationship. Slow burns are often better for me that way and any sort of coercion or harassment will nope me right out.
So, open question - what makes a compelling love story for you?
Good question - but very hard to answer!
There are a lot of love story formulas that work for me, whether it's love at first sight or "bang" right at the start of the first episode (think "Love By Chance", one of my all-time favourites) - or whether it's a slow burn in which the series is all about the chase and only develops into "boyfriends" at the very end (think the first series of "2gether").
I fully understand that many viewers are triggered by harassment (e.g. boss-subordinate) or aggressive behaviour, but I'm totally fine with pretty much anything if it's well done - and, of course, provided that the harasser/aggressor is irresistably cute and makes my heart go pitter-patter (lots of examples, a recent controversial example that I personally loved was "Love Mate").
It's also striking how certain tropes are used again and again in BLs (e.g. enemies to lovers, childhood friends to lovers, love triangles, misunderstandings) - and yet, if the series are well done, I don't get tired of the same tropes.
What's not so important to me are the steamy bedroom scenes - not that I mind if the scenes are good ... but to me, they're absolutely not important to a good love story. (And in any case, if one really wants steamy, one can just watch porn, right?)
So what makes a compelling love story for me? A good plot and screenplay? Character and relationship development that make me feel invested? Or rather than spoken words, is it the way the protagonists longingly look at each other? Authenticity of unspoken feelings? "Chemistry"? One or more actors who make my heart go pitter-patter? Hard to put into words, but yes to all of these.
