Hi everyone,

I specifically looked for a forum where people are genuinely fans of GL series. I have a question—I’m a huge BL fan. I think I’ve watched over 150 BL series by now, but within the BL community, there’s often some negativity towards GL couples and GL dramas. Because of that, I’ve been a bit hesitant to start watching a GL drama.

However, I really want to give it a chance! Does anyone have a good recommendation for a GL drama for a beginner like me? I’m looking for something fluffy, cute, and lighthearted—nothing that will emotionally destroy me while watching. That is a thing for later on, but I don’t want to risk missing out on GL just because my first experience ends up being heartbreaking or frustrating.

Thanks in advance! 😊

If you’re specifically a fan of GMMTV BLs, 23.5 is definitely the way to go with your request

If you liked Pearl from Gameboys, she has her own GL series call Pearl Next Door

Another light one is The Two of Us, which is a sidestory to Deep Night (the BL).

Ill think on a few other suggestions and get back to you ^-^

If Japanese romcoms are your thing, DEFINITELY check out Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko! Hilarious

OMG, you really helped me out a lot! You’re building a great—and possibly even safe—bridge from my comfortable BL world to the GL world. It’s not that I’m specifically a fan of GMMTV BLs, but they do produce a lot of them, so I’m a regular consumer of their BL content. XD That’s why I’ll definitely give 23.5 a chance.

And haha, Gameboys was one of the BLs I gave a 10 on MDL, and I absolutely loved Pearl! Besides that, I really enjoy Japanese series, so I think I’ll start with Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko! Your recommendations are spot on for what I usually like. Thank you so much!!!

I was wondering—are there actually any Korean GL series? Since BL is pretty big there, I was curious!

Im really active in both the BL and GL scene ;)

Korean GL unfortunately is still finding its footing. It’s still mostly restricted to short films and side couples. However, there are exceptions. The recently completed “Friendly Rivalry” has been making major waves as a full-length sapphic drama. It’s not light though.

For a kdrama GL, “To The X Who Hated Me” and “She Makes My Heart Flutter” fit your request. Both are free and officially on YouTube. Tho “She Makes My Heart Flutter” might be going behind a paywall soon. Definitely watch that one quickly.

No problem! Feel free to share your thoughts (positive or negative, honestly) here as you watch them!

I’ll definitely keep that in mind! I’ve been looking for a place to share some of my thoughts after watching a series, but the last time I tried, people weren’t very kind. They took my comments way too personally, which made me hesitant to post or write reviews since then. That’s why your invitation to share my thoughts feels really welcoming—so thank you!

But for now, it’s almost 3 AM here, and I’ve been binge-watching for way too long. I seriously need to get some sleep before I turn into a zombie. 😅

I am so sorry you've been having an unpleasant experience in expressing your opinions. I know the MDL show page comment sections are particularly... aggressive... these past few years. It has resulted in many MDLers moving our interactions to less obvious portions of MDL. Forums and Feeds namely. But indeed, even off of MDL, fandom discourse is fraught with a lot of defensiveness.

I can confidently tell you that many of us in this forum have different opinions and tastes when it comes to dramas. For instance, GAP (and many other dramas from the same author, think Mame type fame and infamy) is one that has a lot of divided opinions in here XD

If you don't tell us what you do and do not like, how are we supposed to keep giving good recs? *shrug* lol

Good Night!

It makes me extremely happy that you're willing to give GL a shot. I genuinely don't understand the hate it gets in BL spaces. T_T

I can't find the comment anymore, but to address the previous suggestion of adding some GL masterlists on to the front page...

I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this.

MDL tag search results are not really a good way to accomplish this for a few reasons:

  • GL can be identified by a few different tags: Lesbian Romance, Lesbian Relationship, Lesbian Female Lead
  • Not all GLs, in our broader lens, would qualify as Lesbian Relationship, as the relationship may not come to full fruition for a variety of reasons
  • Not all GL storylines center on Lesbian characters. As Bisexual and Pansexual women have GL stories too
  • Lesbian Romance could work, but it leaves out some important GLs: Those that would have the Homoerotic Subtext or Censored Adaptation of Same-Sex Work tag (which would also encompass BLs). It also leaves out GL supporting plots. It also includes erotic films, which is most likely not what people would be looking for when searching a GL masterlist.

I follow a few accounts and pages that I think I recall putting together masterlists, and will be checking them out and adding them.

We also do have a few member-created lists already linked (or that I would love to be linked if given permission) that are effectively masterlists.

If anyone has feedback, suggestions, or lists - please do share.

I especially love a couple of shorts -  My Fairy Ghost (Japan) and Lei & Mar (Philippines), starring, written and directed by a real life couple Ward Reinalyn and Klio Manabat. Both are on youtube, direct links in comments on their MDL pages.

Thai GL is picking up speed and improving rapidly. Pay attention to who wrote the novels they're adapted from. You might get on better (or less well) with one or another.

I have thoughts on that, at least for the subset of BL fans who get cross when a title doesn't meet their particular desires. There's also that sexist vein which treats its young women characters badly (crazy ex-GFs showing up to ruin things, or the way only one woman character in all of Theory of Love is allowed to be more than a prop for the men). Don't know if there's less of that being made or if I've just gotten good at avoiding it.

Lei and Mar’s ending doesnt fit the request unfortunately. Though it is very good.
