So I am starting to watch the Thai GL called Mate and I am going into the series completely blind. Without spoiling ofc what is the general feeling on it ?
I quite enjoyed "Mate". I scored it 8/10, which for me, means it is an above average drama, but not brilliant. I have a list of my top 10 Thai GLs you can look at if you want.
Just understand that most of these Thai GLs are not big budget productions, and some of the actors are relatively new to the industry. But a drama doesn't have to be "Netflix" quality to be entertaining, and there are plenty of "Netflix" quality dramas that I wouldn't watch if you paid me.
Here is my general advice when choosing an drama to watch, based on my time on MDL.
1.) The MDL score is USUALLY a good indicator of the quality of the drama. I say "usually", because sometimes a drama gets review bombed for reasons other than the quality of the drama itself. This can happen for reasons I've listed below. It doesn't take a lot of 1/10 scores to lower an MDL score.
- An actor involved in the drama has been involved in a controversy.
- The main plot of the drama involves infidelity by a married person.
- There is very explicit sexual content.
- The drama was different than what it was marketed as.
2.) Take the comments and reviews with a grain of salt. In almost every drama on MDL, you will find people who think a drama is perfect and others who think it is terrible. Some criticisms are simply wrong, indicating the person commenting didn't watch the whole drama.
3.) Read the plot summary of MDL, and if it interests you, start watching it. If after two episodes, you're not particularly enjoying it, just drop it and watch something else. You can always come back to it later.
I hope this is of some help.
