Is "try"/"attempt" not a word in chinese?

This may be a machine translation error, but I've seen many, many MTL Chinese shorts/dramas. And whenever someone has tried to kill someone or similar. The MTL seems to always translate to "Why did you kill <insert name>?" even though they didn't kill anyone and the target is perfectly fine. They just tried to kill <insert name>.

So is this true? or is it just a mis-translation? I'm simply just curious.

There are lots of words that mean something like try or attempt in chinese so this is most likely a machine translation error. If you have a screenshot or a timestamp of a specific one that bothered you I can try to give you an answer in context.
