And back to My Girl. This drama is one of the few that actually made me giggle out loud. And I was so emotionally intuned with the character that I felt sad when they felt sad, laughed out loud at their jokes(calling Lee Jun Ki "sister" at the sauna) and so much more. I have nothing but praise for My Girl. And she's mine! So hands off her!


No real damage done, although this is the 3rd thread of mine you inadvertedly close. I detect a pattern here... ;)

Nah, one thing I have noticed is that a person's first kdrama is always either really crappy or really great.

Guys, you're killing me. And I very much agree, the first drama is a little like the first crush: it doesn't matter if the guy/girl was a lousy kisser, stuttered or had one neuron only, s/he will always be the sweetest memory (or the worst).
As I said, My Girl was my second or maybe first Korean drama, so I have a sentimental debt towards it. One more reason not to watch it again. :D

My GF Gumiho...I liked it but I hated the main lead male which made this drama worst Hong Sisters drama I've seen. I loved the hot vet aka No Min Woo.
Hong Gil Dong - the best historical drama ever. Period.

Oh and Delightful Girl Choon Hyang is also their drama. I liked it too but not my fav by them.

So, please explain to me again why these two are so popular? Wait, apart from Jeanie - you truly tried, my friend, I admire you for that - nobody actually gave me an explanation. I get it that you liked some of their dramas, but in terms of quality, what the heck do their scripts have? Apart from the INEVITABLE eye-candy chosen as the lead man, what else is there?

At the cost of repeating myself, the Hong sisters must be: 1. women who hates their gender; 2. men with wigs and female pen-names.
Why do their female leads always have to be stupid or ignorant (at times both); irritanting and indecisive; naive and oblivious; goodnatured and clumsy (at times all these in a cocktail)? Are they trying to set the perfect example for us women to follow? Are Gong Yoo, Jang Geun Suk, Lee Seung Ki, Kang Ji Hwan the prize we get in the end for being noble idiots?
Ah, wait, we can be the second female: she's always such an adorable character! Clingy, envious, petty, scheming. Yes, but beware, the first prize is then out of your league. At best you'll get a trip abroad as consolation.

I used to be a little sorry for not appreciating their work. Not anymore. I watched 15 minutes of Big and dropped it even before Gong Yoo came on screen. The recipe with all its usual ingredients was already evident. And I'm particularly miffed now because I love Gong Yoo and I so wanted to see him acting in a drama again.

They really screwed the pooch with Big... But I still love Greatest Love and Hong Gil Dong! You can't take them away from me Rita! NONONO!

But to the above quoted portion of your post... I could not whole heartedly agree more. Esp. about Kim Do Woo!!! I absolutely adore her stuff. Much more than the Hong Sisters...and that has always been the case. And I see three of my favorite dramas ever mentioned above on the whole.

Jeanie, I hate to be the one to shatter your adorable, childlike enthusiasm, but... a mediocre book in a forest of wonderful ones makes the great author; a good one in a forest of silliness is pure luck.

I'm not a fan of their scripts, either. I didn't even put BIG on my list because I dropped it too soon. Same goes for My Girl, I didn't really enjoy My GF is a Gumiho but finished it anyway and You're Beautiful has the "second korean drama" bonus.

I don't like them either Their only drama I managed to finish was You're Beautiful (first k-drama ever). I managed to watch 6 episodes of BIG and but I eventually dropped it, it was just... I don't know, boring, I guess. And too much whining I think *sigh* As for My GF is a Gumiho, I dropped it after 1 ep, didn't like the concept... I haven't watched My Girl yet or tried at least so we'll see, I guess

It seems to me, the success of their dramas - at least on the web, because in Korea they usually get average ratings - is due to the good choice of actors, a choice which usually doesn't depend on the writers.

Their stories all have the same pattern: 5/6 episodes of pure fluff and goofs, than one of the characters starts to fall in love (usually the female) but no matter the age, she is invariably surprised by it and doesn't know why she's feeling that way (I've shouted "it's indigestion" a couple of times, but they don't seem to listen to me :S). He is perturbed too, but keeps his front. There's is ALWAYS the (in)famous second guy who never had a chance to begin with, no matter how kind or good-looking he is. Then comes the angst and the tears which last to the final episode, where everything is solved in the last 5 minutes.

There is probably an actor or actress out there I feel the same way about. So many people love Kim Hyun Joong and I just...NO. Sorry but no. Bless his little heart, his overly pasty features and all those out there that adore him. So, I really get it.



I felt it would be weird to quote both of your comments. You mentioned a lot of things that I agree with. I don't necessarily follow a specific script-writer, but I do find that I enjoy the dramas that I watch by the Hong Sisters. I don't think they are all exactly alike either. Maybe just a similar .....tone? Comedy style? But that's to be expected of things that are done by the same writers.


I do feel that the more I think back on You're Beautiful, the less impressed I am with it. I still like it, but there were some flaws.


haha So I'm not the only one who isn't madly in love with Kim Hyun Joong? That's good, I feel less lonely. :p

I won't lie: I gave My Girl an overall 8. It's been my very first Korean drama, and even though I noticed many aspects I would be ranting about now, at the time they just made me smile. I thought all Korean dramas were like that. And since my second was Full House and I fell asleep, you can imagine how shiny My Girl came out in comparison.
As for You're Beautiful, I DID enjoy it. It was entertaining. But I certainly didn't cry with Mi Nam for being a klutz, I didn't fall in love with Tae Kyung because he said "I give you permission to like me" (the most obnoxious line ever written) and I didn't go ohhh for the horrid wall-kisses.
Should I go back to those dramas now that I have watched a few more, I'd drop those too, like I did with all the others (wait, I didn't drop MGumiho because I hated it so much I needed to write a review). :p
